Minecraft Realms vs. Hosting Your Own Server: Which Is Better for Playing With Friends?

Realms is the simpler hosted option for a small group; self-hosting offers more direct control but requires someone to run and maintain the server.

First, check whether everyone plays Java Edition or Bedrock Edition: the standard Realms and server options do not make the two editions cross-play. For a small group that wants a private world available without anyone keeping a computer running, Realms is usually the simpler choice. Hosting your own server makes more sense when someone wants direct configuration and access control—and is willing to operate it.

Check your group’s Minecraft edition first

Java and Bedrock are separate editions with separate compatible Realms and server options. Friends generally need to use the same edition to join through the ordinary setup; choosing a Java Realm will not let Bedrock players join it, or vice versa. Ask everyone which edition they play before comparing price or setup. Minecraft’s Java or Bedrock Edition guide explains the distinction.

Java Realms works across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Bedrock Realms supports Bedrock devices and platforms listed by Minecraft. If you self-host, choose software built for the group’s edition; Java and Bedrock server software are not interchangeable.

Realms vs. self-hosting at a glance

What matters Minecraft Realms Your own server
Setup and upkeep Subscribe through Minecraft; Mojang hosts the Realm. Install and configure compatible server software; the operator maintains the service.
Availability Cloud-hosted and available when the owner is offline. Available while the host machine and server are running and reachable.
Access and control Private, invite-controlled service with plan-defined features and capacity. Operator manages configuration and player access, including allowlists where supported.
Concurrent players Current plans support the owner plus 2 or the owner plus 10, depending on plan. Depends on configuration and machine and network capacity; no universal number is established.
Cost Recurring subscription; current US prices are listed below. Bedrock Dedicated Server software is free; hardware, power, connectivity, and operator time vary.
World backups Minecraft lists free backups for Realms. The operator needs to plan and maintain backups.

What Realms gives you—and what it limits

Minecraft describes Realms as private, cloud-hosted servers. The owner invites players, and invited friends can play the active world even when the owner is offline. Friends do not need to buy their own Realms subscription to join.

The current Minecraft US comparison page lists these monthly plans and simultaneous-player limits (accessed October 2026):

Plan US price per month Simultaneous capacity
Bedrock Realms $3.99 USD Owner plus 2 players
Bedrock Realms Plus $7.99 USD Owner plus 10 players
Java Realms $7.99 USD Owner plus 10 players

Prices and plan details can change and are specific to the US page; check the current Realms plans for your region before subscribing. Minecraft also says an owner can invite up to 10,000 friends. That is an invitation limit, not the number who can play at the same time: the concurrent capacity is the smaller plan limit shown above.

Realms is a managed service, so it is convenient rather than a general-purpose server administration option. Its features and capacity are defined by the plan. Minecraft lists free backups, and the owner can download worlds; do not assume a particular backup schedule.

What running your own server involves

Self-hosting shifts the operation to someone in the group. The operator supplies a machine and network connection, installs and configures edition-compatible software, starts the service, manages who can join, and keeps the server maintained. Friends can connect only while the server is running and reachable.

For Bedrock, Microsoft provides free Bedrock Dedicated Server software for Windows and Ubuntu Linux. Its guide covers server properties and allowlists, and says an existing Bedrock world can be copied into the server’s worlds folder. See Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server getting-started guide. Those documented operating-system details apply to the Bedrock server; they should not be treated as Java setup instructions.

Greater configuration control is the main reason to consider self-hosting, but it comes with operational responsibility. Decide who will start and maintain the service, keep world backups, and handle access. Before changing hosting arrangements, preserve a world copy and confirm the destination setup can use it.

Is hosting your own Minecraft server cheaper?

Not necessarily. The official Bedrock server software is free, but that does not make the whole setup cost-free. If someone already has a suitable machine and connection, the additional cash cost may be limited; otherwise hardware, electricity, internet service, uptime, and the operator’s time all matter. Realms has a visible recurring fee, while the cost of home hosting depends on what the group already has and is willing to maintain. There is no universal cost or savings figure that settles the comparison.

Which option fits your friend group?

Choose Realms for low-maintenance shared play

  • You want a private world that friends can enter while the owner is offline.
  • Your group fits the relevant plan’s simultaneous-player limit.
  • You prefer a managed service with backups listed by Minecraft over operating server software yourself.

Consider self-hosting for more direct control

  • Someone in the group is comfortable installing, configuring, and maintaining compatible server software.
  • You want to manage server settings and player access directly.
  • Your needs do not fit a Realms plan’s stated capacity or features, and you can keep the server running and reachable.

Make the decision in this order

  1. Confirm whether the group plays Java or Bedrock, then choose a compatible hosting route.
  2. Count how many people need to play at once; compare that number with Realms capacity, not the invitation limit.
  3. Decide whether convenience and hosted availability are worth a recurring subscription, or whether someone will take responsibility for self-hosting.
  4. Before moving an existing world, make a copy and check the appropriate edition’s transfer steps.
