“This application failed to start because shortcut.dll was not found”

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →shortcut.dll is an older application DLL associated with Ahead Software AG and Nero software, not a standard Windows file. If shortcut.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the specific Nero program that is trying to load it.
You may also see:
- “The file Shortcut.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading shortcut.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because shortcut.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “shortcut.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording identifies a missing application component, but it does not by itself prove that Windows is damaged. Start by identifying the program named in the error.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the right starting point:
- The error names Nero Burning ROM, NeroVision, Nero Recode, or another Nero component: repair or reinstall that exact Nero product.
- The error appeared after uninstalling Nero: remove leftover Nero components with Nero’s official cleanup procedure, then reinstall one compatible version.
- Your antivirus recently quarantined a file: inspect its quarantine history, but restore the file only if it clearly belongs to your genuine Nero installation. Reinstalling Nero is safer.
- The error appears after disk cleanup or copying an old program: reinstall the parent application instead of copying a DLL into Windows folders.
- The error appears at every boot even though Nero was removed: remove the obsolete Nero startup entry, shortcut, task, or service.
- Other Windows programs also fail, or Windows reports damaged system files: use DISM and SFC after checking the Nero installation.
- A different application names
shortcut.dll: identify that application first. Do not assume every copy of the file came from the same Nero release.
What shortcut.dll is and where it belongs
shortcut.dll, whose internal description is “ShortCut DLL,” is a third-party application DLL associated with older Ahead/Nero software. Historical Nero installation evidence places it in Nero setup files and older Nero product directories.

That does not mean every Nero version contains the same file. Current Nero releases may use different files, locations, or dependencies.
The file normally belongs beside the program that needs it or inside that program’s installation directory. It should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A historical Nero 6 installer record identifies shortcut.dll as a 32-bit Intel PE DLL. That means a 32-bit Nero application can require a 32-bit DLL even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Do not download a supposed 64-bit replacement simply because your Windows installation is 64-bit.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no reliable universal file size, hash, version, or installation path for every Nero release.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the exact Nero program
This is the most likely solution for shortcut.dll errors.
Identify the calling program
- Read the complete error message.
- Note the application name in the title bar.
- Click Start, type the program name, and right-click the result.
- Select Open file location.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
- Check the Target field to identify the installed Nero component and folder.
- Open that folder and look for the program’s other files, but do not copy
shortcut.dllfrom a different application or download source.
If the message appears while Nero starts, treat Nero as the repair target. If it appears during Windows startup after Nero was removed, skip to the startup section below.
Repair the installation when an entry exists
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for the affected Nero product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair if that option is available.
- Follow the Nero setup wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the Nero program again.
A successful repair should let the affected Nero application open without the shortcut.dll message. If the same error returns, the installer may not contain the required file or the installation may contain mixed remnants from another Nero release.

Reinstall from official Nero media
Use the original Nero disc, account download, or an official Nero installer for the same product and release family. Nero maintains official installer and previous-version download pages. Avoid substituting a newer unrelated edition if the old program depends on files from a specific release.
Before removing the existing installation:
- Locate your Nero serial number or account details.
- Copy personal projects, saved templates, exported media, and other data to a separate folder.
- Close Nero and any related background processes.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected Nero product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official Nero installer as an administrator.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install the product into its normal folder unless the installer requires another location.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the program from its installed shortcut.
If the program starts normally, the missing file was restored as part of the application installation. If setup stops, reports that another Nero version is installed, or produces the same missing-file error, use the clean-removal procedure.
Fix 2: Remove old Nero remnants with Nero FirstAidKit
Multiple Nero versions installed over one another can leave incompatible files, registry entries, and startup components. An incomplete uninstall can therefore cause a new installation to request an old file.
Nero provides an official Nero FirstAidKit cleanup procedure for removing remnants of previous Nero programs. This is not a harmless single-file repair. It removes Nero-related files and registry entries, so back up your license information and relevant data first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Save your Nero serial number, account information, and installation files.
- Back up personal Nero projects and media files.
- Close all Nero applications.
- Download
NeroFirstAidKit.zipfrom Nero’s official support instructions. - Right-click the ZIP file and select Extract All.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Right-click the included executable and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the cleanup prompts.
- Restart Windows when the tool finishes.
- Install the required Nero product from official media.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Test the application before restoring optional add-ons or older Nero components.
If FirstAidKit does not resolve the problem, verify that you installed the correct product and that the installer completed extraction. A NeroVision installation, for example, should not be replaced with an unrelated Nero Burning ROM package unless that is the program you actually need.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and security history
Security software can quarantine an old application DLL. Age alone does not prove that shortcut.dll is malware, but an unverified replacement should never be whitelisted automatically.
Windows Security steps
- Click Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving the Nero installation folder.
- Expand the entry and review the detected path and action.
- If the file was quarantined, do not restore it until you confirm that the path belongs to your genuine Nero installation.
- If the detection is uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall Nero from official media.
- Run a full scan after the reinstall.
If antivirus repeatedly removes the file from a clean official installation, update the security definitions and contact the security vendor or Nero support before creating an exclusion. Do not exclude an entire drive or Windows system folder to make an old program launch.

Fix 4: Replace a damaged installer or failed extraction
A setup package can be incomplete even when it opens normally. This can happen after a failed download, damaged disc, interrupted extraction, or copying only part of an old program folder.
- Delete the damaged installer copy.
- Download the matching Nero installer again from Nero’s official download or previous-version page, or use the original installation disc.
- Save it to a local folder such as Downloads.
- Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, select it and click Apply.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Allow the installer to finish without cancelling extraction.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Nero application.
Do not solve a failed extraction by copying a DLL from another computer. Files from another installation may belong to a different product release, architecture, or dependency set.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
shortcut.dll is not a protected Windows system file. DISM and SFC normally will not restore it. Use them when Windows itself shows broader symptoms, such as several built-in applications failing, repeated component errors, or system files being reported as corrupted.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
Run DISM
- Click Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
The command may appear to pause at a percentage for a while. Do not close the window unless it reports an error.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try the Nero application again.
If SFC says it found and repaired damaged files, test Windows and then reinstall Nero. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, that is expected for many shortcut.dll cases because the file belongs to Nero, not Windows.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while leaving the broken Nero installation untouched. If you prefer a guided scan that identifies repair issues before applying changes, Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual guesswork; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair actions are handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Nero program remains the definitive fix when Nero is the application that owns the missing file.
Fix 6: Do not register shortcut.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that provide a COM registration function such as DllRegisterServer. An application-private helper DLL does not become usable merely because it was registered.
For this reason, do not run:
regsvr32 shortcut.dll
unless the application vendor specifically instructs you to do so for that exact file and release. A “module could not be found” result from regsvr32 can also refer to a missing dependency, not just a missing target file.

If the error appears every time Windows starts but Nero is no longer installed, an old startup reference may still be calling the removed program.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Nero or an entry whose location points to an old Nero folder.
- Select the entry.
- Click Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Check the Startup folder
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
shell:startup
- Press Enter.
- Remove only a shortcut that clearly points to the obsolete Nero installation.
- Repeat with:
shell:common startup
- Restart Windows.
Do not restore shortcut.dll just to satisfy an orphaned startup shortcut. Remove the obsolete call instead.
Fix 8: Update drivers only for a broader hardware problem
A display, storage, or optical-drive driver does not normally restore shortcut.dll. Check drivers only if Nero also crashes while accessing a burner, camera, audio device, or other hardware.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as DVD/CD-ROM drives, Display adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and current status.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the hardware-related Nero function.
If Windows cannot find a driver, obtain it from the hardware manufacturer rather than using a random driver package. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through multiple hardware pages; its free scan identifies driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling Nero when shortcut.dll itself is missing.
Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
Do not download shortcut.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the Nero folder.
That approach can fail because:
- The file may contain malware or unwanted modifications.
- It may come from the wrong Nero release.
- It may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Its dependencies may still be missing.
- It can hide a damaged installation.
- It can create conflicts when more than one Nero version is installed.
- Windows may continue loading the wrong copy.
The safe sources are the original Nero media, Nero’s official installer pages, and Nero’s official previous-version downloads. Restore the application as a matched set rather than treating one DLL as an independent Windows component.
Frequently asked questions
Is shortcut.dll a Windows file?
No. Available Nero installation evidence associates it with older Ahead/Nero applications. It should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Is shortcut.dll malware?
Not automatically. An old Nero DLL can be legitimate, but a file found outside the expected application installation or detected after an unknown download deserves investigation. Do not whitelist an unverified copy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need a 64-bit shortcut.dll on 64-bit Windows?
Not necessarily. At least one historical Nero installer identifies the file as a 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit Nero program can require a 32-bit application DLL on 64-bit Windows.
Will installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no reliable evidence that shortcut.dll belongs to those Microsoft runtimes. Install a runtime only if the repaired Nero program reports a separate missing runtime component.
Can SFC restore shortcut.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while shortcut.dll is an ordinary third-party Nero application file. Reinstall Nero to restore it.
Why does the error say the module could not be found when the file is present?
The message can mean that a dependency required by shortcut.dll is missing or that the program is loading the wrong copy. Reinstalling the parent Nero application restores the expected group of files.
Recommended Free Tools
What if I no longer need Nero?
Uninstall Nero, restart Windows, and remove any obsolete startup entry that still points to it. If the uninstall is incomplete, use Nero’s official cleanup procedure after backing up your data and license information.
Should I use System Restore?
Use it only when the problem began immediately after a known software change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not the routine fix for a missing Nero DLL.
Preventing the error from returning
- Keep the Nero installer and serial information with your personal software records.
- Do not mix files from different Nero releases.
- Back up Nero projects before uninstalling or cleaning old versions.
- Check antivirus quarantine before manually deleting application files.
- Avoid registry cleaners and automated DLL repair utilities.
- Do not copy application DLLs into Windows system folders.
- Use one compatible Nero installation instead of leaving several partial versions installed.
- If an old Nero program is no longer needed, remove its startup entries after uninstalling it.
For most users, the correct path is straightforward: identify the Nero program named in the error, repair or reinstall that exact product from official media, use Nero’s cleanup utility if old remnants block setup, and reserve Windows repair commands for evidence of wider Windows corruption.
