Turn it down or off only if it feels like it is pulling your aim away from where you want to go. The right choice depends on the game, its settings and how the assist feels to you—not on a universal rule that off is more skilled or more competitive.
What aim assist does—and why it can feel different
Aim assist is a broad name for game-controlled help with aiming, not a single mechanic. Depending on the game, it can slow camera movement near a target or move the camera closer to one. It does not always mean automatic target lock. SpecialEffect’s developer guide describes several ways games can implement assistance.
In Apex Legends, EA says aim assist helps controller players aim more accurately and is stronger for console players. EA Help recommends leaving it on, noting: “We don’t recommend turning off aim assist, as players using a mouse and keyboard have an advantage over players using controllers.” That is EA’s guidance for Apex, not a rule that applies to every game. EA’s Apex Legends support page explains the feature and its settings.
When to keep it on, adjust it, or turn it off
Keep it on as your default
For ordinary controller play, start with the game’s default assist. It is intended to help with aiming, and some games recommend it for controller users. This is a starting point, not a promise that it will improve every player’s results.

Change it if it interferes with your control
If the slowdown or camera movement makes it harder to follow the target you intend to track, try a different assist profile or reduce its strength if the game offers those controls. Call of Duty’s official Modern Warfare III guide recognizes that preference varies: “Aim Assist is useful to controller users, but for some players, this makes their experience a little worse.” It lets players toggle the feature and choose among Default, Precision, Focusing and Black Ops types. The MWIII controls guide describes those options and recommends trying them to find a fit.
Turn it off only if that suits your play
Some players may prefer aiming without assistance, but the official guidance cited here does not establish that turning it off improves skill, makes play more legitimate, or produces better competitive results. Make the choice based on your control and comfort in that particular game.

How to compare settings fairly
- Open the game’s own training area. In Apex Legends, EA specifically recommends trying aim assist off in the Firing Range. Other games may call their practice space a training area or tutorial.
- Change one aim setting at a time. Compare the same kinds of targets at similar distances so you can tell what the assist change feels like. This is a practical comparison method, not proof that one setting improves performance.
- Try the available types or strengths. If the game offers profiles or a strength control, compare those as well as the on/off toggle. A single toggle may be all another game provides.
- Notice whether your intended aim feels easier to control. Decide from your experience across repeated practice, rather than treating one shot or one match as a verdict.
If aiming still feels wrong, check sensitivity and dead-zone settings separately. Call of Duty’s MWIII guide treats these as distinct controller options; changing them at the same time as aim assist can make it difficult to identify what caused the difference.
Why the answer changes by game, mode and platform
Games implement different mechanics
In Apex Legends, EA says aim assist is automatically enabled for console players and PC players using controllers; mouse-and-keyboard players do not have it, and console players receive stronger assistance. Those statements describe Apex specifically, not every title or cross-play arrangement.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III offers several aim-assist types. A separate Activision guide for the 2019 Modern Warfare release describes its own Standard, Precision and Focusing behaviors: Standard slows look and aiming speed near an enemy, Precision uses a tighter area with stronger slowdown, and Focusing provides stronger slowdown when aim would narrowly miss. The guide suggests Precision for confident aimers and Focusing for newer players. These descriptions and suggestions apply to that release, not to aim assist generally. Activision’s 2019 Modern Warfare controls guide gives the version-specific details.
Other genres may put assistance in different settings
Horizon Forbidden West lists Aim Assist as an optional Gameplay Assist among its combat supports. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle documents controls to toggle assistance and adjust its strength for shooting, throwing, melee and whip use. These examples show why it is worth checking the current settings guide for the exact game rather than assuming its options match a shooter’s. PlayStation’s accessibility feature overview covers Horizon Forbidden West, and Bethesda’s accessibility guide covers Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

What to check before playing competitively
Aim-assist design can affect multiplayer balance, but that alone does not establish whether a particular tournament or league permits a setting. If you compete in an organized event, check its current rules for the game and platform you use. SpecialEffect’s developer guidance discusses multiplayer balance as a design consideration, not as a ruling for any event. SpecialEffect’s gameplay-assistance guide explains that context.
