Should I Sell My Old MTG Cards? How to Decide

Old MTG cards are not automatically valuable. Identify the printing and condition, compare realistic net proceeds with a specific offer, and keep cards you still value.

Sell only after you know what you have and what you would actually net. Keep cards you still play or would regret losing; price-check valuable singles and compare a specific dealer offer with realistic online proceeds after fees, shipping, time, and possible disputes. If only a few cards justify individual listings, sell those separately and move the remainder as an honestly described lot.

When should you sell old Magic cards?

The right choice depends on what matters more to you: the cards’ play or personal value, or the money and space you could gain. An old card is not automatically valuable, and a card’s resale estimate cannot account for the enjoyment or sentimental value you get from keeping it.

  • Keep cards you still use, feel attached to, or would regret replacing.
  • Price-check first if the collection is unsorted, its contents are uncertain, or it may include valuable older printings.
  • Sell individual cards when their likely net proceeds justify the extra work of listing, packing, shipping, and handling buyer questions.
  • Consider a dealer or local game store if a quick, simpler sale matters more than handling cards one by one. Ask for a specific offer rather than assuming a standard percentage.
  • Split the collection when a few cards merit individual listings but the rest does not. Keep a record of what you remove and describe the remaining lot accurately.

Pause before accepting a material offer based on a quick look if the cards may include valuable printings, or if condition or authenticity is uncertain. Getting another assessment can help you avoid a costly pricing mistake.

How do you find out what old Magic cards are worth?

Start by identifying the exact card and inspecting its condition. A card’s name alone is not enough for a useful comparison: set, printing, promo or alternate version, language, foil status, and condition can all matter. Cardmarket advises sellers to choose the correct product page for distinct editions and promos (Cardmarket seller guide).

#1 Best Overall
Magic the Gathering 50 Cards Includes 25+ Rares/Uncommons MTG Cards Collection Foils & mythics possible!
  • Includes a mix of AT LEAST 25 Rares/Uncommons which is half of the cards.
  • Absolutely NO... Basic lands, Foreign, or silver/gold bordered cards.
  • Some may contain Foils or Mythics but not all.
  • Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
  • Mint/Excellent condition only.
  1. Make an inventory. Photograph the cards or record their names and details. For a large collection, first flag standout rares, foils, promos, alternate printings, and older cards; decide afterward whether cataloguing every card is worth the time.
  2. Match the exact version. Check the set, artwork, language, foil status, and whether a card is a promo or other distinct printing. Do not compare a listing for one version with a different version just because the card names match.
  3. Inspect condition under good light. Look at edges, corners, surface, creases, water damage, bends, and foil curl. TCGplayer’s condition framework considers physical structure, playability, and authentication; it also notes that foils can curl (TCGplayer Card Condition Guide). Describe what you can see, and do not imply a grading service has examined a card unless it has.
  4. Compare evidence for the same version and condition. Check recent sales or current marketplace references, not just asking prices. eBay’s card price guide supports collectible card games and recommends matching details such as set, year, variant, and grade where applicable (eBay card price guide). eBay says its market value updates every few minutes, but rare or infrequently sold cards may have little or no guide data. Treat a guide as a reference, not a guaranteed sale price.
  5. Calculate likely net proceeds. Subtract marketplace and transaction fees, postage and packing materials, and account for your time. Also consider the possibility of a return or condition dispute. A headline listing price is not the amount you will necessarily keep.

TCGplayer’s seller agreement says marketplace fees are based on a percentage of the sale price and can change (TCGplayer Seller Agreement). Its Direct program has a distinct fee schedule effective June 18, 2026: the official FAQ describes a 50% fee for Direct cards priced at $2.49 or below, and, for cards at $2.50 or above, a $1.12 reimbursement fee plus standard marketplace and transaction fees. For the latter price band, it lists 8.95% commission, 2.5% transaction, and a possible 2.5% Pro fee. Those terms apply to that Direct program, not every TCGplayer sale or another marketplace; verify the current schedule and model your own inventory (TCGplayer Direct fee FAQ).

For a significant card or collection, compare at least two concrete offers or selling routes when feasible, and write down exactly which cards each includes. Sleeves can be useful for handling cards while sorting or photographing, but they do not establish value or improve a card’s underlying condition.

Where should you sell old MTG cards?

Each route trades effort and control against convenience. Access to a marketplace varies by region, so check whether the platform serves your location before planning a sale.

Route Best suited to Main trade-off Evidence and caveat
Individual online listings, such as TCGplayer Identified cards with enough likely net value to justify separate listings and fulfillment You have more control over listings, but must identify and describe cards accurately, handle fees and shipping, and respond to buyers. TCGplayer’s agreement sets seller obligations and fees, which can change. Direct has a separate fee schedule.
eBay listing Cards for which photos, buyer reach, and card-specific guide references are useful You still need accurate variant and condition details and must fulfill the sale; guide estimates do not guarantee a transaction. eBay documents price-guide support for collectible card games and scanning for Magic cards. Results may be limited for rarely sold cards.
Cardmarket Sellers with access to its market who can match the exact listing Choosing the wrong edition or promo page can create listing and dispute problems; condition judgments can be subjective. See Cardmarket’s official seller guide; check current regional access.
Local game store or reputable dealer A seller who values convenience, an in-person discussion, or one offer for a collection The offer may exchange potential proceeds from selling cards individually for speed and less work. No universal buylist percentage is established. Wizards recommends reputable dealers in authenticity guidance written for buyers, not as a guarantee of a dealer’s buylist terms. Ask for a specific written offer (Wizards authenticity guidance).
Keep or partially sell Cards with ongoing play, personal, or sentimental value Retained cards do not provide immediate cash, and their future prices are uncertain. The decision depends on your own preferences, not marketplace evidence.

Individual listings also bring seller responsibilities. TCGplayer’s agreement requires accurate, complete descriptions and timely seller responses. If authenticity is in question, Wizards advises caution around proxy copies of valuable cards and recommends reading auction fine print in its buyer-oriented guidance; do not treat an unclear listing or quick appraisal as proof.

Does tournament legality affect what a card is worth?

Legality and resale value are separate questions. A card’s legality in a particular format may affect interest from that format’s players, but it does not determine its appeal to casual players or collectors. Check the current rules and banned-and-restricted list for the specific format if that matters to your likely buyers. Wizards’ December 20, 2022 announcement described a policy tying tabletop tournament legality to prerelease availability; it is background, not a current value guide (Wizards announcement).
