Buy now if you know which games and ecosystem you want, and the current local price fits your budget. Wait if your existing setup is good enough and you prefer to postpone spending until future hardware is officially detailed. Microsoft has announced Project Helix as a next-generation Xbox project intended to play Xbox console and PC games, but its cited announcement gives no consumer price or launch date. PS6 details are not established here, so neither rumored dates nor specifications should drive the decision.
Start with the decision you can make today
The practical choice is not between two fully specified consoles: PS5 models are available now, while Project Helix is an announced future project and PS6 information remains unresolved. Decide based on three things you can assess: what you want to play soon, which existing library and gaming network matter to you, and what you are willing to spend at current local prices.
- Set a spending ceiling. Include the console, any disc drive or bundle differences, games, and subscriptions you expect to use. Treat official recommended pricing as a reference, not a guarantee of what a retailer charges today.
- List the games and people that matter. Identify the games you want during the next year and whether your existing account, library, friends, or physical discs favor one ecosystem.
- Decide what waiting costs you. Waiting preserves your money for now, but delays playing on hardware you can buy today. Do not count an unannounced specification or rumored release date as a benefit you can bank on.
What you can buy now: PS5 models
Sony’s US recommended prices, announced March 27, 2026 and effective April 2, 2026, are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. These are dated US recommendations, not live retailer quotes or prices for other countries. Check the current local offer and compare the models against whether you need a disc drive and whether the games and display you use make the higher-priced model worthwhile. Sony’s price announcement.
PS5 Pro and ongoing PS5 development
Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI upscaling tier for PS5, and named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles using it. That is evidence of current platform development, not a promise about future support or a measurement of what any particular buyer will see. Sony’s QSSR announcement.

What Microsoft has and has not said about Project Helix
Microsoft’s April 23, 2026 strategy announcement describes the goal as delivering Project Helix “to lead in performance and play your console and PC games.” This establishes the project’s stated direction, not a complete product specification. The cited material does not set a consumer price or launch date. Microsoft’s Project Helix announcement.
A separate June 10, 2026 Xbox strategy update discusses planning for the 2027 holiday season in the context of expected component cost increases. It does not announce that Project Helix will launch in that season. Do not treat that planning reference as a release commitment. Microsoft’s June update.

If you already own Xbox discs
Microsoft says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support a feature that lets a player claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game. The statement is limited to supported games on the named current consoles. It does not establish that those games or entitlements will work on Project Helix. Check title eligibility before making a purchase decision based on the feature. Microsoft’s disc entitlement announcement.
PS6: what is safe to assume?
The official-source material cited here does not establish whether Sony has formally announced PS6. It supplies no confirmed PS6 release timing, price, specifications, or backward-compatibility policy. That is an unresolved status, not proof that no announcement exists. If your decision depends on verified PS6 details, wait for official Sony information rather than treating rumors as confirmation.

Make the call by your situation
Buy now if you have games waiting
If a current console gives you access to specific games you want to play soon, your ecosystem choice is clear, and the local price is acceptable, waiting for unspecified hardware details may offer little practical value. Choose the model that fits your actual library and budget rather than paying more for a feature you do not expect to use.
Wait if your current setup still works
If you are not missing games you care about and would rather avoid spending before the next products are detailed, waiting is reasonable. Set a personal trigger for reconsidering—for example, an official product announcement with price and availability—rather than using rumor cycles as a deadline.

Do not buy on a compatibility assumption
If keeping a library is the deciding factor, verify the rules for the exact games and console you own. Microsoft’s disc-entitlement feature is for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X games on the named current consoles; it says nothing definitive about Project Helix. Likewise, there is no established PS6 compatibility policy in the cited material.
Quick Recap
What to verify before paying
- Current price and stock in your country; the cited PS5 prices are US recommended prices effective April 2, 2026.
- Whether the model includes or supports the disc option you need, and whether your relevant library is physical or digital.
- The specific games you plan to play and which ecosystem your friends and accounts use.
- For Xbox discs, whether each title is among the supported games in Microsoft’s feature guidance.
- For future hardware, an official announcement that actually states product availability, price, or compatibility—not an inference from strategic language or a planning reference.
