That helps separate a mod issue from a game-installation problem without assuming that reinstalling, changing load order, or rolling back is safe for every title.
Why did my mods stop working after an update?
Mods are built around assumptions about a particular game version, data format, interface, dependency set, or behavior. A patch can change one of those assumptions. A mod may then crash, fail to load a save, break a UI or visual effect, or appear enabled while doing nothing. It may need an update from its creator, depend on a library or loader that is now incompatible, or conflict with another mod. A damaged base-game file can cause similar symptoms.
Larian Studios cautions that “Changes to the game, such as a new update, or mods with certain dependencies or conflicts, can impact how supported mods function.” Bethesda Support likewise notes for Skyrim Special Edition that “If the game has been recently updated, Creations and Mods may not work properly until they are updated by the creator.” These are game-specific examples, not a guarantee that every title handles mods the same way.
Why does my game crash after an update?
A crash is a symptom, not proof that one particular mod is responsible. In Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian lists launch crashes, saves that stop loading, UI trouble, and visual problems among possible issues with modded saves. A missing dependency, a mod conflict, or a problem with the base game can also be involved.

Before changing anything, note the exact game version or build, platform and storefront, mod manager or loader, mod names and versions, dependencies, and the first error or symptom. If you can, keep a separate copy of an unmodded save or other recoverable backup. Bethesda specifically advises retaining unmodded saves so players can revert if modded gameplay causes problems.
How do I check whether a mod is outdated?
- Check the installed game build. Find the version in the game or the relevant launcher or platform, then compare it with the version listed for each mod. Confirm that the mod is intended for your installed build, not just the same game title.
- Check the mod listing or manager for an update. For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian says the Installed tab displays an Update button when a mod needs updating. Other games and managers may present update information differently.
- Verify required dependencies and loaders. Check that each required mod, library, or mod loader is installed and compatible. CurseForge specifically advises using a modloader version or type compatible with the selected Minecraft version.
- Look for known conflicts. Check the mod creator’s instructions and the game’s mod platform for compatibility notes. Add-ons that overlap or require incompatible versions can cause failures even when each appears enabled.
There is no universal version screen or update button across games. In Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian’s advice applies to supported mods; third-party files may have different installation and update instructions. Minecraft resource packs, behavior packs, and add-ons have their own conflict scenarios.

How can I tell if a mod or the game itself is broken?
- Disable the mod set using the game’s or manager’s instructions. Do not delete mod files or alter a save as a first test. Larian recommends unchecking installed mods and checking whether the issue persists; Bethesda recommends removing a Creation or mod and reloading to test whether it is implicated. Follow the specific title’s guidance, especially when saves are involved.
- Repeat the same action that caused the failure. If the issue disappears with mods disabled, focus on the mod set, its dependencies, and compatibility with the current build. If it remains, investigate the base game or installation instead.
- If the unmodded game works, re-enable compatible mods in small steps. Use the official manager or the creator’s instructions, testing after each small change. This can help identify the mod or dependency associated with the problem; there is no universal reinstallation order.
- If the unmodded game still fails, use the publisher’s game-specific support steps. For example, Bethesda’s Skyrim PC support guidance includes verifying files through Steam. That instruction is for Skyrim on that storefront, not a general fix for every game or platform.
What should I do if the problem follows a mod?
Check the creator’s page or the game’s official mod listing for a compatible update, dependency requirements, and installation instructions. If the issue persists, contact the mod author with the game version, mod version, steps that trigger the problem, and any relevant error message or logs. Larian directs players to mod authors for issues with player-created mods; CurseForge support requests logs for several unresolved errors.
If the problem remains after disabling mods, contact the game publisher or platform support and include the same useful details. Avoid treating a game-file repair, save edit, folder deletion, or rollback as a generic next step: the safe procedure depends on the title, platform, and storefront.

Do all players need the same mods in multiplayer?
Check the specific game’s multiplayer rules. For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian says all participants need the same mods and versions. That requirement should not be assumed for other games or for every cross-platform or shared-save setup.
