Buy at launch if playing immediately is worth the price and uncertainty to you. Wait for reviews or a sale if more information, a lower price, or time for your backlog matters more. There is no universally best buying date: a future discount is not guaranteed, and refund rules depend on the platform, region, and transaction.
How to decide whether a game is worth buying at launch
Weigh the value of playing now against the launch price and what you still do not know. Ask yourself:

- How much does playing now matter? The release window may be important if you want to join the conversation or play alongside friends.
- How confident are you that the game suits you? Familiarity with the series, developer, genre, or gameplay can inform your choice, but it does not remove uncertainty about this release.
- Can you find reviews for your platform and version? Reviews add information, but a review of a different platform or version may not answer the questions you have.
- How comfortable are you with launch-state uncertainty? If you prefer to see how a game performs and develops after release, waiting gives you more time to assess it.
- Does the purchase fit your budget and backlog? If you already have games you want to play, waiting may help you avoid spending on a game that will sit untouched.
- What are the actual refund terms? Check the store policy that applies to your region and purchase before treating a refund as a safety net.
These are decision factors, not a forecast: waiting does not guarantee a discount, and buying later does not guarantee that a game will better suit you.
What reviews can—and cannot—tell you
Reviews can help you judge whether a game fits your preferences, but their timing and scope vary. The 2024 Big Games Machine Games Journalist Survey records concerns that short lead times for review copies can affect review quality or delay publication. That is survey commentary, not evidence that every review or game is affected.

Before relying on a review, check which platform and version it covers, and whether it addresses the aspects you care about. If the reviews you need are not available yet, waiting is one way to get more information; it does not guarantee a lower price.
Do not assume a sale will arrive on a schedule
Steam says it does not refund the difference when a game’s price changes. Its refund FAQ says a customer may request a refund for the original purchase and repurchase the game at its current sale price, subject to refund eligibility. This policy describes what may be possible after a price change; it does not predict when a sale will happen.

Check the refund policy for your store, region, and transaction
Refund rules are not interchangeable across storefronts. These examples show why it is important to check the terms that apply to your own purchase.

Steam pre-orders
Steam’s pre-order guidance says a pre-order that has been released can still qualify for a refund if the request is submitted within two weeks of release and playtime is under two hours, subject to the standard policy. This is a Steam-specific example, not a general refund promise.
PlayStation Store digital games in the United States
For the United States, PlayStation’s Store policy allows cancellation of a digital game within 14 days of purchase only if downloading or streaming has not started, except for faulty content. Digital pre-order conditions also depend on when the order was placed and whether downloading or streaming of the main product began. Check the policy for your region and transaction.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
Early Access is a different launch decision
For games in Early Access, consider whether you are willing to play the game in its current state rather than judging the purchase only by plans for a future full release. Steam Support’s Early Access guidance puts it plainly: “If you aren’t excited to play the game in its current state, then hold off and wait until a future update or full release.” This advice is specifically about Early Access games.

A practical decision rule
- Buy at launch if playing immediately matters enough to you, the price fits your budget, and you accept the remaining uncertainty.
- Wait for reviews if you want more evidence about the game, especially from coverage of your platform and version.
- Wait for a sale if the current price is not worthwhile to you. Treat any future discount as uncertain, not scheduled.
- Wait for a later update or full release if an Early Access game’s current state does not appeal to you.
