Start with the affected game’s exact entry in RPCS3’s Compatibility List, then verify your firmware and game setup before changing graphics or game settings. RPCS3 issues are often title-, renderer-, or driver-specific, so a change that helps one game may do nothing—or cause new problems—in another.
1. Check whether the game has a known issue
Search the RPCS3 Compatibility List for the exact game. Check its region or game ID when relevant, and read the current status along with any linked wiki or forum notes. The project defines Playable as a game that “can be completed with playable performance and no game breaking glitches.” Other statuses can indicate limitations or failure to initialize.
Compatibility entries change frequently. Use the live listing for the title rather than relying on an old status or a general claim about RPCS3. Compatibility categories describe a game’s status; they are not statistics about the likelihood that your particular setup will crash.
2. Verify the firmware and game setup
Use the official RPCS3 setup guides to check that you have installed official PS3 firmware and added a legitimate game dump correctly. If the game does not appear, fails immediately at launch, or behaves differently than expected, confirm these basics before experimenting with advanced settings.

3. Narrow down renderer and driver problems
Graphics failures may depend on the selected renderer, the specific GPU, and its installed driver. Check the project’s Graphics Driver Issues page for documented defects or support notes that match your hardware and driver context. Treat any listed workaround as specific to that context, not as a universal fix.
For an initial test, avoid aggressive resolution scaling. The official setup guidance recommends starting at 100% resolution and increasing gradually. Change one graphics variable at a time and note whether the crash, freeze, or launch failure changes; otherwise it is difficult to tell which adjustment mattered.

4. Test title-specific settings carefully
Before changing emulator options, look up the affected game in the RPCS3 Wiki FAQ and consult the game’s own wiki notes where available. A recommended setting may apply only to that title or a particular issue.
When testing a setting, use a per-game custom configuration where appropriate. That keeps the experiment limited to the affected title instead of changing behavior for every game. Change one setting at a time, then test the same reproducible situation.

5. Make a useful support report
If the failure persists, gather enough detail for others to distinguish a setup issue from a game, renderer, or driver problem. The RPCS3 FAQ asks issue reporters to include system details and the RPCS3.log file.
- Operating system, CPU, and GPU model.
- The exact game title and title ID or region, if known.
- Your RPCS3 build and selected renderer.
- The steps that reproduce the crash, freeze, or launch failure, including when it occurs.
- The full RPCS3.log file, rather than a cropped excerpt.
When comparing possible causes, note whether the game’s compatibility entry documents the symptom, whether it changes with a renderer or driver, whether it reproduces with default versus per-game settings, and what the log indicates. These comparisons help narrow the problem, but none alone proves the cause on your system.
