Wait when reviews could change your decision—especially on performance, stability, content, accessibility, or online features. There is no universally better choice; the useful question is whether the benefit of playing now outweighs the value of having better information first.
Use these six checks to make the decision
- Value of playing now: Is there a specific reason to join at release, such as friends playing together, a launch event, or strong personal enthusiasm? For a multiplayer game, check whether your friends or the wider community are actually likely to be most active then.
- Unknowns that could change your mind: Would you choose differently if the game runs poorly on your platform, has less content than expected, or has problems with controls, accessibility, stability, or online play? If so, reviews and player reports have practical value.
- Cost of a bad fit: Weigh the purchase price against your budget and how much you would regret a disappointing game. The greater the downside for you, the more useful it is to reduce uncertainty first.
- Refund terms: Check the storefront, region, edition, release timing, and whether pre-loading, downloading, launching, or playing affects eligibility. A refund policy is not automatically a free-trial period.
- What waiting might change: Waiting gives you time to gather evidence and may give you a chance to buy at a different price or find the game later. Neither a future discount nor continued availability is guaranteed.
- Quality of the evidence: Prioritize detailed reviews that tested the platform you plan to use and explain the factors you care about. A score, review count, or early-access label is context, not proof that a game will suit you.
When buying at launch makes sense
Buying early is easier to justify when you have strong reasons to expect the game will fit your tastes and you value playing as soon as it releases. That value might come from joining friends, participating in a time-sensitive event, or simply wanting to experience the game without delay. Make the choice with the possibility of bugs, performance issues, or disappointing content in mind rather than assuming launch reviews or patches will resolve them.
If the game is in Early Access, judge the version available now rather than treating future changes as certain. Steam Support advises: “If you aren’t excited to play the game in its current state, then hold off and wait until a future update or full release.” That is Steam’s guidance for Early Access purchases, not a universal rule for every launch purchase. When waiting for reviews is the better fit
Wait if your decision depends on information you do not yet have. Reviews can help establish how the game performs on a particular platform, how much content it offers, how its controls and accessibility options work, and whether online features are functioning as expected. Look for evidence that matches your priorities: a review of a different platform may not answer your performance question, and a general score may not explain whether the game suits your preferences.

For multiplayer games, balance that information against the possibility that friends or a larger player community are most active near launch. Do not assume either that launch is the only worthwhile time to play or that the community will remain equally active later; check what is known about the specific game.
How to interpret review timing and scores
A review embargo close to release is not, by itself, evidence that a game is good or bad. The 2024 Big Games Machine Games Journalist Survey says short lead times for review builds can put pressure on reviewers and contribute to reviews appearing after release. Assess the reviews that are available: whether they cover your platform, explain their testing and comparisons, and discuss the features you care about. An aggregate score can orient you, but it cannot tell you how much you will value a game’s particular strengths or tolerate its weaknesses.
Check the refund rules for your store and region
Policies differ by storefront, country, product, and timing. Read the live terms for the exact purchase before relying on a refund as a way to manage uncertainty. These official pages describe the named storefront’s policies; they are not legal advice or a guarantee that an individual request will qualify.

- Steam pre-orders: Steam says a pre-order can be refunded any time before release. After release, the standard refund policy applies, with a different cutoff for an Advanced Access pre-purchase. Confirm the terms for your transaction on Steam’s pre-purchase FAQ and its refund page.
- PlayStation Store in the US: The cancellation policy sets conditions for pre-order cancellations and for downloaded or streamed content. Review the current US PlayStation Store cancellation policy; do not assume a downloaded or opened game can be returned as a trial.
- PlayStation Store in the UK: The separate UK policy describes immediate digital delivery and how consent affects cancellation rights. Read the UK PlayStation Store cancellation policy rather than applying it to other regions.
- EA app or EA.com: EA’s policy has eligibility criteria, and the purchase channel matters. It describes a limited route for certain new games that cannot be played for technical reasons within EA’s control, not a general satisfaction guarantee. See EA’s refund policy.
- Steam in the EU or UK: Steam describes its voluntary refund policy separately from statutory withdrawal rights. The legal position depends on the jurisdiction and purchase facts; see Steam’s EU/UK refund information.
Before paying, check whether the edition includes Advanced Access, when the game releases in your region, and whether pre-loading or starting play changes the relevant refund window. Store policies can change, so verify the current terms rather than relying on an old summary.

A physical copy is a purchase format, not a way to know in advance whether a game performs well or suits you. PlayStation said on July 1, 2026, that it would discontinue production of physical game discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting January 2028. The statement concerns disc production for new PlayStation games; it does not say physical games or retail sales will end in 2028. Check PlayStation’s purchase-channel announcement for updates.
