If you want to play now, buy the console that fits the games you want, the friends you play with, and the library you already own. If your current setup still does the job, waiting is reasonable—but there is no confirmed retail launch date for either company’s next-generation console in the official information cited here. Microsoft has said developer alpha hardware for Project Helix is planned to begin shipping in 2027; that is not a consumer release date.
Buy now or wait?
Use the games you want to play as your first filter, then compare your existing library, friends’ platforms, physical-media needs, and actual local costs. Neither console is the universal choice: the right one depends on the games and ecosystem that matter to you.
- Buy now if a specific game you want is available on one of these consoles, your current system cannot play it, and the local price works for your budget.
- Wait if your current console or PC is serving you well and you are comfortable with an unknown successor timeline. Official announcements do not establish when a next-generation console will reach stores.
- Do not buy based on an assumed launch year or price. Project Helix has a developer-hardware milestone, while Sony has said next-generation timing and pricing decisions had not been made.
What do PS5 and Xbox Series X cost?
These are dated US reference points, not a like-for-like global quote. Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 were $649.99 for PS5 with disc drive, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Microsoft’s US Store listing showed Xbox Series X starting at $799.99 when accessed on October 7, 2026; it is a live listing that can change. Check local retailers for current price, model, stock, and promotions. Sony’s price update; Microsoft Store Series X listing.

Check must-play games first
Confirm that the specific games you care about are currently available—or officially announced—for the console you are considering. In its January 2026 game announcement, Xbox listed Fable for Xbox Series X|S and PS5, and Forza Horizon 6 for Xbox and PC initially, with a later PS5 release planned. Those are announced platform plans, not guarantees; check the latest publisher information before buying for a particular release. Xbox’s January 2026 announcement gives those examples, but is not a comprehensive library comparison.
Account for games you already own
If you have a library or accessories tied to one ecosystem, check whether the games and devices you want work on the console you plan to buy. Microsoft lists Xbox One compatibility and support for select Xbox 360 and original Xbox games on Series X; compatibility is title-specific, not universal. Look up each older game rather than assuming it will run. Microsoft’s Series X product page describes its compatibility and hardware claims.

Ask where your friends play
If multiplayer is central, find out which console your friends use and whether the particular game supports cross-play between platforms. Cross-play support varies by game, so a console-level assumption is not enough; check the game’s own current support information.
Does physical media matter to you?
A disc drive can matter if you own games on disc or want the option of buying or reselling physical copies. Compare the exact console model, because disc support differs. Microsoft says most Xbox One and Series X disc games support a digital entitlement feature, but not every title was supported at launch. That feature does not mean every disc game is playable without its disc; confirm the specific game and console requirements. Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature announcement describes the feature and its limits.

Will the next generation arrive soon?
Microsoft: Project Helix is in development
Microsoft’s Jason Ronald described Project Helix as a next-generation first-party Xbox designed to play Xbox console and PC games, using a custom AMD system-on-chip. He wrote that Microsoft planned to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Developer hardware is not a retail console: the announcement does not establish the final product name, consumer specifications, price, or launch date. Xbox Wire’s Project Helix announcement.
Sony: no next-generation timing or pricing decision cited
Sony’s 2026 Corporate Strategy and Earnings Announcement Presentation Q&A said that “no decisions have been made regarding timing or pricing” for next-generation platforms. That is what Sony said at the time of that Q&A, not a promise about when it will make a decision. Do not treat the age of PS5, industry expectations, or rumors as a confirmed PS5 successor launch window. Sony’s 2026 investor Q&A.

Xbox has also described rising memory and storage costs and predicted further increases through 2027. Those are the company’s statements and expectations, not an independent forecast of a future console’s retail price or supply. They are another reason not to assume a successor will be cheaper—or more expensive—than today’s systems. Xbox’s June 2026 price notice; Xbox’s June 2026 strategy post.

Consider a premium console only if its benefits matter to your games, display, and budget. Sony says PS5 Pro-enhanced features are available only in selected games and vary by title; an enhancement claim is not a promise that every game will look or run better in the same way. Sony lists a 2 TB SSD for PS5 Pro, but that capacity alone does not determine whether the model is worth its higher price. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement.

Microsoft lists Xbox Series X with a custom SSD and advertises up to 120 FPS and 12 teraflops. Those product specifications do not mean every game reaches 120 FPS or a particular resolution. If storage is a deciding factor, confirm the exact console model and compatible expansion requirements before buying a drive; no specific expansion product is established here. Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Write down the games you want to play. Check each game’s current platforms and release status with its publisher.
- Check your existing library. Verify title-by-title compatibility for older games, and consider whether your discs, digital purchases, or accessories are tied to an ecosystem.
- Ask your multiplayer group. Check friends’ platforms and the specific game’s cross-play support.
- Compare local total cost. Include the console model, games, storage, and any subscription you intend to use; verify checkout prices and stock.
- Decide whether waiting is worth the uncertainty. The cited official announcements do not provide a consumer launch date for either successor.
