Should You Buy Donkey Kong Bananza’s DK Island & Emerald Rush DLC?

Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush is best understood as a compact fan add-on, not a second campaign. It combines a nostalgic visit to Donkey Kong’s home with a timed, repeatable challenge mode built around collecting emerald ore. If you already own Bananza on Nintendo Switch 2 and want more reasons to return to its characters, scenery and movement system, it has a clear appeal. If you are expecting a large new region, a long story or the same depth as the main game’s underground layers, the package is likely to feel slight.

This assessment uses Nintendo’s product and support information and the independent review by Dashiell Wood, Gaming Editor at TechRadar. Wood reports spending more than three hours with the add-on in handheld mode using standard Joy-Con 2 controllers and the system’s built-in speakers; those observations and judgments belong to his review, not to first-hand testing by this publication.

What the add-on is, at a glance

Nintendo released Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush as digital content for Nintendo Switch 2 on September 12, 2025. The full Donkey Kong Bananza game is sold separately and is required. Nintendo’s official listing describes the package as a trip to Donkey Kong’s home alongside the new Emerald Rush mode. You can confirm the platform, release information and current store presentation on the Nintendo of America product page.

What you actually get on DK Island

DK Island is a modern interpretation of Donkey Kong’s home rather than a conventional replacement for one of Bananza’s underground layers. Nintendo’s description centers on a recognizable setting and activities that reward returning to it, making the area particularly relevant to players who value atmosphere, callbacks and completion goals over a new narrative campaign.

A familiar home with recognizable landmarks

The island includes DK’s Treehouse and the Gangplank Galleon. These landmarks are meaningful because they connect the add-on to Donkey Kong’s broader history while still being presented inside Bananza’s modern world. The setting is designed to be visited, explored and revisited rather than consumed as a one-direction story route.

Characters, photos and statues

Familiar characters appear around the island and can be used for in-game photos. Nintendo also lists character statues that can be purchased with Banandium Chips. That creates a straightforward optional loop: explore, collect the relevant currency and spend it on display pieces. The statues are a better reason to return for completion-minded players than for someone who only wants to see the island once.

Hidden bonus stages

DK Island hides bonus stages in mine cart tracks and jungle ruins. Those locations give exploration a mechanical purpose, so the area is not only a backdrop for sightseeing. Nintendo does not describe the island as a new full campaign or assign it the scale of the game’s main layers; the verified feature list instead emphasizes these compact discoveries, character moments and collection targets.

Donkey Kong Bananza - For Nintendo Switch 2
  • Embark on a brand-new Donkey Kong adventure exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Explore the Underground World with dynamic environments and hidden secrets.
  • Battle VoidCo and its minions using DK’s signature strength and powerful punches.
  • Team up with a mysterious new companion with unique gameplay abilities.
  • Recover the Golden Bananas across thrilling, action-packed levels.

How Emerald Rush changes the pace

Emerald Rush is the add-on’s more repeatable half. Nintendo describes increasingly difficult challenges focused on collecting emerald ore while completing side missions, with exclusive perks tied to the mode. Support documentation characterizes the activity as timed runs that can be repeated across DK Island and layers of the underground world.

The basic loop

  1. Enter a timed run. The mode sends you into a defined challenge rather than an open-ended sightseeing session.
  2. Collect emerald ore. Ore gathering is the central objective, so movement, route choice and speed matter more than leisurely exploration.
  3. Handle side missions. Secondary objectives add constraints and alternate priorities to the run.
  4. Finish before the timer expires. The time limit gives each attempt a clear endpoint and encourages another try when a route or objective goes wrong.
  5. Work toward perks and rewards. Exclusive perks and the mode’s progression provide reasons to improve beyond a single successful run.

The structure suits players who enjoy chasing cleaner routes, better scores or more efficient collections. It is less suited to players who regard timers as pressure and prefer the main game’s slower process of opening up a large area, experimenting with transformations and following a broader exploration path.

Events and changing rewards

Nintendo says Emerald Rush events are held periodically and may offer special rewards and exclusive statues. Because the schedule and reward selection are time-sensitive, treat any event information shown in the game or on Nintendo’s current service pages as the authoritative version. A guide written around one event should not be assumed to describe every later event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The event structure can extend the mode’s usefulness for an active community, but it also means the value of a particular reward depends on when you play and what is currently available. Nintendo’s published materials establish the periodic nature of these events, not a fixed calendar or guaranteed event count.

Donkey Kong Bananza Standard - Nintendo Switch 2 [Digital Code]
  • Uncover a wide variety of environments, like forest, canyon, and lagoon, as you delve underground
  • Reshape the world as you tear through it, with the help of…an Odd Rock?

When and how you unlock the content

Access is tied to story progress rather than being available immediately from a new save. Nintendo Support explains two routes depending on whether you have completed the main story. The support instructions are collected in What DLC is Available? and the troubleshooting page Unable to Access DLC.

Before the main story is complete

  1. Progress through the main game until you can reach the Racing Layer.
  2. Find Squawks there.
  3. Use Squawks to reach DK Island.

This route lets an active playthrough access the add-on before the final story completion, provided the required point in the Racing Layer has been reached.

After the main story is complete

  1. Speak with an Elder to hear about “Bananza Rehearsal.”
  2. Strike the Warp Gong when the route is available.
  3. On DK Island, talk to Void Kong to begin Emerald Rush.

If the island or mode does not appear, check that the add-on is installed on the same Nintendo Switch 2 user and system that can launch the base game. Nintendo’s support article covers separate checks for physical and digital copies, so use that page for the exact recovery path instead of assuming that reinstalling the entire game is necessary.

What the prerequisite means for a purchase

This is not a standalone Donkey Kong game. You need the full Donkey Kong Bananza release as well as the add-on, and the two products may appear as separate listings in a store. Nintendo’s product page identifies the prerequisite; its support documentation also treats physical-card and digital ownership as distinct troubleshooting cases. Verify the edition and account that will use the content before completing a purchase.

  • This title includes all the fun and challenge of the original game, plus a brand-new mode that lets new and novice

  • Funky Kong can double jump, hover, perform Infinite rolls and even perform Infinite underwater corkscrews.
  • Thanks to his sturdy surfboard, even spikes can't slow him down.

How the two halves fit together

DK Island and Emerald Rush serve different moods. DK Island is a place to wander, recognize landmarks, take photos, locate bonus stages and spend Banandium Chips on statues. Emerald Rush is an activity to repeat under a clock while pursuing ore, side missions, perks and event rewards. The add-on therefore offers one primarily exploratory destination and one primarily performance-oriented loop.

If you want… The better part of the add-on is… Why
Donkey Kong callbacks and a recognizable home DK Island The island houses DK’s Treehouse, Gangplank Galleon, familiar characters and statues.
Short sessions with a clear objective Emerald Rush Timed runs give each attempt a defined start, goal and finish.
Completion targets Both Banandium Chip purchases, hidden bonus stages, perks and event rewards provide separate goals.
A large new story or region Neither Nintendo’s listed content focuses on the island visit and challenge mode, not a second campaign.
Relaxed, open-ended exploration DK Island Emerald Rush’s timer and side missions prioritize efficiency instead of unhurried discovery.

That split is important when judging value. A player who uses the main game as a platforming and exploration adventure may see Emerald Rush as a useful change of pace. A player who mainly wants another long journey may find that the add-on’s two formats do not replace the breadth of the original experience.

What the independent review found

TechRadar’s Dashiell Wood, identified by the publication as Gaming Editor, reviewed the DLC on Nintendo Switch 2. He says he spent more than three hours with it in handheld mode, using standard Joy-Con 2 controllers and the console’s built-in speakers. That is the stated method for his review, not a test conducted by this site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wood’s central judgment is favorable but limited: he considers the add-on an enjoyable diversion for players who want more Bananza and for long-time Donkey Kong fans attracted by the familiar setting. He also finds that DK Island offers less to do than the main game’s layers and that Emerald Rush can become samey. His conclusion is that the package is too slight for readers seeking a long-lasting, substantial expansion at its launch price. Read his full assessment at TechRadar’s independent review.

Best Value
Nintendo Switch 2 System with Donkey Kong Bananza Game Bundle
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Explore a vast underground world—by smashing your way through it!
  • A brand-new 3D platforming action adventure starring Donkey Kong and Pauline

Those points are most useful as a decision framework rather than as universal measurements. The amount of repetition you tolerate, the importance you place on Donkey Kong history and your interest in collecting statues all change the experience. Wood’s criticism does not mean Emerald Rush lacks purpose; it means the loop may not sustain every player for as long as the main game’s broader exploration does.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?

Buy it if you are a returning fan with specific goals

  • You already own Donkey Kong Bananza and want a reason to revisit its movement and combat systems.
  • The idea of visiting a modern Donkey Kong home, seeing familiar characters and taking in landmarks such as the Treehouse and Gangplank Galleon appeals to you.
  • You enjoy collecting Banandium Chips to unlock character statues and searching for hidden bonus stages.
  • You like timed challenges, route optimization and repeat attempts more than a single linear playthrough.
  • Exclusive perks, periodic events and event-specific rewards are meaningful to your play style.
  • You are comfortable with an add-on that complements the main game instead of trying to replace it.

Wait or skip it if you want a substantial expansion

  • You expect a long new story with major character development.
  • You want a completely new region whose breadth matches the main game’s underground layers.
  • You dislike timers, repeated runs or objectives that reward speed and optimization.
  • You are only interested in seeing DK Island once and do not care about statues, bonus stages or perks.
  • You have not reached the required story progress and would be buying content you cannot use immediately.
  • You do not own the Nintendo Switch 2 base game, since the add-on does not substitute for it.

Value, ownership and purchase checks

No single price verdict remains valid across regions or storefront updates. TechRadar’s “too slight” assessment is explicitly tied to the launch-price context of that review, not a recommendation about every later sale or bundle. Before buying, open the current Nintendo listing for your region and confirm whether you are viewing the add-on alone or a package that also includes the base game.

Use this checklist at checkout:

  1. Confirm the hardware. The listed product is for Nintendo Switch 2.
  2. Confirm ownership. Make sure the account or physical copy you use can launch Donkey Kong Bananza.
  3. Check the product name. The DLC and full game are separate items.
  4. Check story access. If you have not reached the Racing Layer, the content will not be an immediate early-game activity.
  5. Decide which loop you will repeat. Choose it for the island’s exploration and collectibles, Emerald Rush’s timed challenges, or both—not for an unadvertised full campaign.

Extra controllers are not presented by Nintendo as a requirement. Wood used standard Joy-Con 2 controllers in his review, but that observation does not establish that additional hardware is needed.

A practical decision by player type

Player profile Recommendation Reason
Donkey Kong enthusiast Strongest case to buy The setting, familiar cast, statues and island landmarks directly target series affection.
Completion-focused Bananza player Good conditional fit Bonus stages, Banandium Chip purchases, perks and event rewards add distinct objectives.
Time-trial or arcade-style player Good conditional fit Emerald Rush is built around repeatable timed runs and escalating challenges.
Story-first player Probably wait The verified feature set does not describe a second substantial narrative campaign.
Casual player who only wants a quick tour Consider the current price carefully The island may satisfy curiosity, but the repeatable systems matter less if you will not revisit them.
Newcomer without the base game Start with the base game decision The DLC cannot be used on its own.

Bottom line: a focused companion, not a second Bananza

Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush makes the most sense when you can name the extra activity you want: exploring a recognizable Donkey Kong home, collecting statues and finding bonus stages, or replaying timed Emerald Rush runs for better results, perks and event rewards. Nintendo’s official description supports that focused scope, and the access route is clear once you reach the relevant story milestone.

TechRadar’s independent review supports buying for fans who want more Bananza while warning that the island is less expansive than the main layers and that Emerald Rush may grow repetitive. Treat it as a conditional recommendation: a worthwhile companion for nostalgic explorers and challenge-seekers, but a poor substitute for a full-sized expansion if that is what you expect from the purchase.
