For Diablo 4’s Season 8, Seasonal Realm was the right choice if you wanted the season’s Lord of Lies quest, themed content, and fresh progression. Choose Eternal Realm if you wanted to keep playing existing characters without starting a seasonal character. Season 8 began on April 29, 2025, and is now historical; these recommendations describe that season, not a current one.
What was the difference between Seasonal and Eternal Realm?
Seasonal Realm
A Seasonal Realm character began a fresh seasonal journey with that season’s theme, limited-time features, and earnable rewards. For Season 8, Blizzard required a new Seasonal Realm character to access the Lord of Lies quest, and players also had to complete the base-game campaign.
Eternal Realm
Eternal Realm was the persistent home for existing characters and ongoing progression. It suited players who wanted to continue refining their current characters rather than begin a new seasonal journey.
Which realm should you have chosen for Season 8?
| Choose | If your priority was | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Seasonal Realm | Playing the Lord of Lies quest and following Season 8’s themed journey with fresh character progression. | You needed to create a new Seasonal Realm character, and the seasonal content and features were time-limited. |
| Eternal Realm | Keeping existing characters and continuing their persistent progression. | You could not meet the new Seasonal Realm character requirement for the Lord of Lies quest. Some Season 8 rewards were still available, but time-limited. |
Could Eternal Realm players earn Season 8 rewards?
Yes. Eternal Realm players could access Season 8 Battle Pass Reliquaries, so reward access was not exclusive to Seasonal Realm. However, any Reliquary rewards left unclaimed disappeared when that Reliquary expired. If you played Eternal, claim rewards before the relevant Reliquary expired.

What happened to a Seasonal character when the season ended?
Seasonal characters and their progress transferred to Eternal Realm when the season ended. Blizzard also stated that Paragon experience earned during a season was added to the Eternal Realm character’s Paragon experience track at season’s end. This meant a seasonal character’s progression was not simply discarded, although season-specific features were limited to the season.
When did Season 8 begin?
Blizzard announced that Season 8 began April 29, 2025, at 10 a.m. PDT. The reviewed announcement does not establish the season’s end date. Because Season 8 is historical as of October 8, 2026, this is a retrospective guide rather than advice about a currently active season.
