Should You Force ReBAR in Games NVIDIA Doesn’t List? The Safe Answer

You can test ReBAR in an NVIDIA-unlisted game, but only per game and only after confirming system-level ReBAR works. Compare FPS, frame times and stability before keeping the override.

Yes, you can test ReBAR in an unlisted game—but do not force it globally or assume it will improve performance. NVIDIA’s approved-game list is primarily a driver-level performance whitelist: it identifies games NVIDIA tested and chose to enable automatically, not every game that is technically incapable of using Resizable BAR. If your system already reports Resizable BAR: Yes, test the setting per game, compare repeatable frame-time results, and keep the override only if it produces a consistent improvement without instability.

The short answer

For most players, leave NVIDIA’s default profile alone. For enthusiasts, forcing ReBAR in one unlisted game can be a reasonable experiment when the system-level feature is already working.

The important distinction is between two separate decisions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Platform support: whether your motherboard, CPU, GPU, firmware and driver can expose Resizable BAR.
  • Per-game activation: whether NVIDIA’s driver chooses to use that capability for a particular game executable.

A PC can have ReBAR working correctly at the platform level while the driver leaves it disabled for an individual game. Conversely, changing a game profile cannot repair an unsupported motherboard, GPU VBIOS or firmware configuration.

What NVIDIA’s approved list actually means

NVIDIA tests games because ReBAR is not a universal performance boost. Depending on the game and its memory-access patterns, it can improve performance, make little difference or reduce performance. NVIDIA has said that its tested titles saw gains ranging from a few percent to as much as 12% in its testing, while also warning that some games became slower. Those results came from NVIDIA’s original March 30, 2021 ReBAR announcement; they are not a current guarantee for every GPU, driver, game patch or graphics API.

That is why NVIDIA uses driver profiles to enable ReBAR selectively. The list is better understood as a tested performance policy than as a universal compatibility whitelist.

In practical terms, a game being absent from the list usually means:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • NVIDIA has not enabled ReBAR automatically for that title in the profile you are using;
  • NVIDIA may not have tested the relevant game version, executable or rendering API;
  • the company may have tested it and decided that enabling ReBAR was not worthwhile;
  • the game may still function correctly if ReBAR is enabled manually.

“Not listed” therefore does not prove that forcing ReBAR will fail. It also does not suggest that forcing it is safe or beneficial in every configuration. Only an A/B test on your exact PC can answer that performance question.

What ReBAR changes—and what it does not

Resizable BAR is a PCI Express feature that allows the CPU to map a larger portion of the GPU’s framebuffer instead of accessing it through smaller windows. The intended benefit is more efficient transfer of assets such as textures, shaders and geometry. NVIDIA’s overview explains the feature and its intended gaming use in more detail here.

ReBAR is not:

  • a GPU overclock;
  • a replacement for a faster graphics card;
  • a guarantee of higher FPS;
  • an increase in the physical amount of VRAM on the card;
  • an instruction for a game to expose or continuously consume the entire framebuffer.

NVIDIA says the BAR value is a ceiling for the amount of address space a game can use, not a command that the game must use the entire framebuffer. A larger mapping can help some workloads, particularly those frequently streaming or accessing large groups of assets, but the game engine and driver still determine whether that access pattern is useful.

Check system-level ReBAR before changing a game

Do not begin with a Profile Inspector override if your system does not already support ReBAR normally. First verify the platform.

Typical prerequisites

  • A compatible GPU and, where required, a supported GPU VBIOS.
  • A compatible CPU and motherboard.
  • Motherboard UEFI/SBIOS support.
  • Above 4G Decoding enabled in firmware.
  • Re-Size BAR or similarly named firmware option enabled.
  • Compatibility Support Module (CSM) disabled.
  • UEFI boot mode.
  • A GPT-formatted boot drive where the firmware configuration requires it.
  • A sufficiently recent NVIDIA driver.

The exact menu names differ by motherboard manufacturer. NVIDIA’s support guidance covers these prerequisites, verification steps and related recovery issues in its Resizable BAR support article.

RTX 30-series owners may need a GPU VBIOS update, depending on the exact card and vendor firmware. Newer GeForce generations commonly include ReBAR capability, but motherboard and firmware support still remain necessary. Laptop support is model-specific and controlled largely by the manufacturer; a BIOS option or desktop troubleshooting procedure may not apply to a particular notebook. Older graphics cards should not be assumed to support ReBAR merely because the motherboard offers the setting.

If a VBIOS update is required, use only the correct tool for the exact card model. A failed or interrupted firmware update has a different risk profile from editing a game driver profile. NVIDIA specifically warns users not to power off during its supported firmware-update process.

Verify ReBAR in NVIDIA Control Panel

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Select Help from the top menu.
  3. Choose System Information.
  4. Find Resizable BAR in the information panel.
  5. Confirm that it says Yes.

If it says No, stop there. Fix the platform configuration before experimenting with a per-game override. Check that a BIOS update or reset did not disable the settings, confirm that Windows is booting in UEFI mode, check the boot drive’s partition style, update the motherboard firmware when appropriate, and verify the GPU VBIOS with the card manufacturer’s tool.

A game-profile tweak cannot turn a system-level “No” into a reliable “Yes.”

What “forcing ReBAR” means

Forcing ReBAR in an unlisted game normally means editing that game’s NVIDIA driver profile. It does not mean changing the motherboard’s ReBAR capability.

Third-party tools such as NVIDIA Profile Inspector expose internal driver-profile controls associated with ReBAR. Community documentation commonly refers to entries such as:

  • rBAR - Feature
  • rBAR - Options
  • rBAR - Size Limit

These are not official, stable consumer settings documented by NVIDIA. Their names, values and behavior can change with NVIDIA driver releases, Profile Inspector versions, game executables and rendering APIs. A community guide describing the controls is available here, but it should be treated as an unofficial reference rather than a guarantee that a particular recipe is correct for your current driver.

Do not blindly copy fixed flag values from an old guide. Driver updates can alter profiles, and a launcher update can change the executable that actually runs the game. DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 versions may also use different profile paths or behavior.

A safer per-game testing procedure

1. Establish a baseline

Before changing anything, record:

  • your NVIDIA driver version;
  • the exact game executable and rendering API;
  • resolution, graphics preset and individual settings;
  • ray tracing, upscaling and frame-generation settings;
  • the save file or benchmark scene you will use;
  • refresh rate, V-Sync and variable-refresh settings.

Use the game’s built-in benchmark where available. Otherwise, choose a repeatable route through the same demanding area—especially a traversal route that stresses asset streaming. Close unnecessary overlays and background applications, and run the test at least three times with the default profile.

2. Change only the game profile

  1. Close the game.
  2. Use a legitimate, currently maintained source for any third-party profile tool; do not download random modified executables.
  3. Open NVIDIA Profile Inspector and select the profile for the exact game executable.
  4. Search for the ReBAR or rBAR entries.
  5. Record the original values before editing.
  6. Change only the ReBAR-related entries.
  7. Apply the profile changes.
  8. Launch the game with the same API, settings and save file used for the baseline.

Do not use a global override as the default experiment. NVIDIA’s selective approach exists because game results differ, and a global change can introduce regressions in unrelated titles.

Crashes or visual issues

Measure average FPS, 1% lows, 0.1% lows where available, frame-time spikes, GPU utilization, VRAM use, CPU utilization, power draw and temperature. Also watch for shader-compilation behavior, traversal hitching, texture pop-in and asset-streaming problems.

Keep the resolution, preset, ray tracing, DLSS or other upscaling mode, frame generation, driver, game patch, save file, benchmark route and synchronization settings identical. Treat a change below roughly 2–3% as potentially normal run-to-run noise unless it appears consistently; that percentage is a practical testing heuristic, not an NVIDIA specification.

Prioritize smoother frame times and better lows over a small average-FPS increase. A setting that reports a higher average while making traversal visibly less consistent is usually a bad trade.

When to keep or remove the override

Keep it only if all of these are true

  • Average performance improves consistently across repeated runs.
  • 1% lows improve or frame-time consistency is visibly better.
  • Traversal or asset-streaming stutter decreases.
  • The result survives several minutes of ordinary gameplay, not just a benchmark.
  • There are no crashes, driver timeouts, texture errors or geometry corruption.
  • Input behavior, latency, V-Sync, HDR and variable-refresh behavior remain normal.

Revert it if any of these occur

  • Average FPS falls or 1% lows worsen.
  • Frame-time spikes increase.
  • The game crashes, hangs or triggers a driver reset.
  • Textures, shadows or geometry render incorrectly.
  • Loading or shader compilation becomes less stable.
  • The improvement appears in only one noisy run.
  • A later driver update changes the result.

To undo the change, return the game profile’s ReBAR entries to their recorded values or use the tool’s restore/default function if available. Reinstalling or clean-installing the NVIDIA driver can rebuild driver profiles, but that is a heavier recovery step and should not be the first response to a single-game experiment.

Recheck the title after major driver updates. Driver installation may overwrite, modify or replace the profile. If NVIDIA later adds official ReBAR support for the game, remove the manual override and let the first-party profile control it.

What can go wrong?

No measurable benefit

This is the most ordinary outcome. The game may already stream assets efficiently, be CPU-limited, or simply have no workload that benefits from a larger BAR mapping. No change is a valid result.

Lower performance

NVIDIA’s own explanation is the reason not to force ReBAR universally: some titles lose performance. Possible causes include the game’s memory-access pattern, driver overhead, an engine issue, a rendering-API interaction, or a mismatch between the profile and the game’s expected behavior.

Stutter or instability

A forced profile may expose a code path NVIDIA did not enable for that title. Establish that the problem is reproducible before blaming ReBAR: shader compilation, asset streaming, CPU scheduling, storage latency, overlays, frame generation and driver changes can all cause stutter.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Black screen or boot failure

A black screen or boot problem is generally a platform-configuration or VBIOS issue, not the expected result of changing one game profile. Revisit UEFI mode, CSM, GPT, Above 4G Decoding, motherboard firmware and GPU VBIOS settings. NVIDIA’s support documentation covers troubleshooting for systems that report “Resizable BAR: No” and related display problems.

Who should try it?

  • Casual player: leave NVIDIA’s default profile alone unless the game has a specific, measurable performance problem.
  • Enthusiast: test one game at a time with a repeatable benchmark and record the original profile values.
  • Competitive player: keep the override only if 1% lows and frame-time consistency improve, not merely because average FPS rises.
  • Laptop owner: check the laptop manufacturer’s support information first; firmware, power limits and thermal behavior are model-specific.
  • Troubleshooting user: do not use a game-profile force to fix a PC that reports ReBAR as disabled.

Use extra caution with anti-cheat-protected games, multi-executable titles, emulators, older DirectX implementations, eGPU or multi-GPU systems, and games that are clearly CPU-limited. A profile experiment is least useful when the GPU is not the limiting component.

Final checklist

  • NVIDIA Control Panel reports Resizable BAR: Yes.
  • UEFI, CSM, Above 4G Decoding and Re-Size BAR settings are stable.
  • The GPU and motherboard firmware are appropriate for the exact hardware.
  • The override is applied to one game profile, not globally.
  • A baseline exists using the same game patch, driver, settings and scene.
  • At least three comparable runs were completed in each state.
  • Average FPS and frame-time lows were checked.
  • Normal gameplay produced no crashes, corruption or new stutter.
  • The original profile values were documented for easy recovery.

For the majority of players, NVIDIA’s default per-game decision is the sensible starting point. For a user with working system-level ReBAR and the patience to benchmark properly, a reversible per-game test is reasonable. The approved list is not a hard statement that every unlisted game is incompatible—but it is a warning that the result is title-dependent, so the benchmark, not the label, should decide.
