Usually, no. Night Asura is reported to be optional: killing him does not affect the main story or prevent you from joining the Midnight Blades. If you want to read his Challenge Letter, try Wind Sense before attacking. Leave him alive if keeping this apparently unique NPC matters to you; a guide reports that he does not respawn after death.
What happens if you kill Night Asura?
Game8 says killing Night Asura has no significant effect on game events and does not block Midnight Blades membership. The reported reward is a letter, not a required story item. Game8 describes it as a Challenge Letter; AllThingsHow says a letter is associated with defeating him but cautions that it may not drop every time.

AllThingsHow reports that Night Asura does not respawn after death. That is a third-party guide claim, not an official guarantee, and the available guides do not establish whether behavior varies by version, region, or platform.
Should you leave him alive or fight him?
| Choice | Best if you… | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Leave him alive | Want to preserve the NPC or only want to inspect his letter. | Game8 says Wind Sense can let you read the Challenge Letter without killing him. |
| Kill him | Want the encounter or are willing to accept the reported permanent removal. | The letter is associated with the encounter, but AllThingsHow says it may not drop on every kill. No major story or sect-progression benefit is reported. |
These details come from third-party guides rather than official game documentation. Game8 describes the letter as readable with Wind Sense or obtainable by killing him; AllThingsHow does not promise a guaranteed drop.

How to approach Night Asura
- Find him: AllThingsHow places Night Asura atop the large Buddha statue.
- Try Wind Sense first: Speak with him and use Wind Sense if your goal is to read the letter without fighting, as Game8 recommends.
- If you choose combat, use a fast weapon: Game8 recommends repeated attacks with a fast weapon.
- Stay on the statue: AllThingsHow warns that being knocked off resets the encounter, including his health and the attempt.
Do you need to kill him to join the Midnight Blades?
No. Game8’s joining guide describes a separate initiation route involving Icchantika, the dialogue choice “My heart is that of an Asura,” and a White Decree. Night Asura’s death is not presented as a requirement for that route.
