Usually, yes for characters whose damage depends heavily on triggering transformative reactions; for other characters, level 90 is a priority to weigh against talents, weapons, artifacts, and teammates. The level-based reaction multiplier rises from 1,077.44 at level 80 to 1,446.85 at level 90, but that is not a universal increase to every kind of damage. The final ascension also raises the level cap to 90 and unlocks talent leveling up to level 10. HoYoWiki’s damage-calculation reference and the character reference explain the relevant mechanics.
When is level 90 worth prioritizing?
Characters triggering transformative reactions
Prioritize level 90 when a character deals much of their damage by triggering level-dependent transformative reactions. The reaction damage calculation uses a character-level multiplier: HoYoWiki lists 1,077.44 at level 80 and 1,446.85 at level 90. These are multipliers in the damage formula, not percentages of a character’s total damage, so they do not mean every attack or build gains the same amount. Characters who benefit from their level-based stats
Consider level 90 if a character’s personal scaling or survivability makes the additional levels useful. Ascension increases a character’s bonus attribute, but the stat and amount are character-specific; check the character’s kit and role rather than assuming a universal percentage increase. The character reference describes the ascension unlocks.
Characters dealing ordinary talent-scaled damage
If a character’s damage mainly comes from talent-scaled attacks rather than level-sensitive reaction damage, level 90 can still help, but it may not be the best next investment. With limited resources, raising key talents or a weapon, improving artifacts, or developing another team member may be more valuable. That is a prioritization choice, not a rule that level 90 has no benefit.

The 80-to-90 increase requires 3,423,125 character EXP and 684,800 Mora for EXP materials. If you use only Hero’s Wit, that is 171 books. These figures are listed in the Genshin Impact Wiki’s Character EXP reference, accessed October 8, 2026; its search result was crawled approximately three months earlier.
For context, going from level 1 to 90 totals 8,362,650 character EXP and 1,673,400 Mora for EXP-material use, according to the same reference. Those totals do not include the separate ascension costs.

What does the final ascension unlock?
The final ascension requires Adventure Rank 50 and 120,000 Mora. It raises the cap to level 90, increases the character’s bonus attribute, and unlocks combat talent leveling up to level 10. Character-specific boss drops, local specialties, and other ascension materials are additional costs and vary by character. The Character reference lists the ascension details.
Keep the two Mora figures distinct: the 684,800 Mora is for the EXP materials used to go from 80 to 90; the final ascension has its own listed 120,000-Mora cost.
Is 90 still the maximum level?
Level 90 remains the ordinary level-cap milestone, but it is no longer the highest possible level for every eligible character. HoYoverse’s Version Luna I update details say that one Masterless Stella Fortuna can raise an eligible level-90 character’s ascension limit and level to 95; using two can raise the limit and level from 95 to 100. The update says these increases enhance stats without requiring additional materials. This is a special Stella Fortuna system, not a standard continuation of the EXP-book upgrade path. - Identify the source of the character’s damage. If the character frequently triggers transformative reactions, level 90 is a stronger candidate.
- Check the character’s specific scaling and role. Consider the ascension attribute and whether additional levels help the character’s damage or survival in your team.
- Compare the cost with your next best upgrade. If the character is not strongly level-dependent, decide whether EXP materials and Mora would do more for the team when spent on talents, a weapon, artifacts, or another character.
- Treat 90 as a milestone, not an obligation. The level cap and talent unlock make the final ascension useful, but not every character needs to reach it before the rest of the team is developed.
There is no system-wide level-90 ranking that fits every character: the right call depends on the character’s kit, ascension stat, build, and team. The decision guide above applies the documented system-level tradeoffs rather than claiming a character-by-character damage test.
