Yes—ARK single player is a good fit if you want an offline, private survival run on your own schedule. You can also adjust progression-related settings if the default pace does not suit one player. Choose a server instead if you want a shared world or interaction with other players. Because the title does not specify ARK: Survival Evolved or ARK: Survival Ascended, check the settings and save guidance for your edition and platform before making changes.
What single player offers
The ARK Official Community Wiki describes Single Player as an offline game mode. That makes it a natural choice if you want to explore, build, and progress without joining a server or coordinating with other players. It does not remove the game’s survival demands; the appeal is being able to play privately and at your own pace.

The wiki also describes a “Use Singleplayer Settings” option in Host/Local settings. It adjusts progression-related factors, including XP and taming or breeding rates, and can be enabled or disabled. The exact effects and defaults can vary by game version, so review the controls in your edition rather than relying on universal multiplier advice. ARK Official Community Wiki: Single Player
Which mode fits what you want?
| Your priority | Starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Play offline and decide when your world is active | Single Player | It is described as an offline mode by the ARK Official Community Wiki. |
| Adjust the pace for a one-person run | Single Player with settings reviewed | The wiki describes solo-oriented progression adjustments, but check the current values in your game. |
| Share a world with other players | Server-based mode | Studio Wildcard documents multiple server modes, including PvE and PvP. |
| Play with others but avoid direct player-versus-player damage | PvE server | Studio Wildcard says PvE players cannot directly damage other players or other tribes’ dinosaurs and structures. |
A PvE server is not the same as offline solo play: it remains a shared server with other players and server rules. Studio Wildcard describes PvE servers this way: “On these servers, the only threat to survival is the environment.” That is the official description of PvE, not a claim about Single Player. What to consider before committing to a solo world
Progression is adjustable, not automatically easy
The single-player settings option is intended to make progression more approachable for solo players and small groups. The wiki lists adjustments involving earned engram points, XP, taming and breeding, and XP requirements. These controls give you room to tune the experience, but they do not guarantee that the game will feel easy or that one setting is right for every run.
Protect your save before experimenting
The wiki reports that Single Player does not support multiple save slots. It describes backing up local save folders—such as SavedArksLocal and LocalProfiles for The Island, or corresponding map folders for DLC—to preserve or switch saves. Folder names and procedures can differ by edition and platform, so verify the current instructions for your setup and back up your world before experimenting with saves or settings. - Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dino herd
- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
Check edition-specific controls
This recommendation applies broadly to ARK, but it is not a version-specific setup guide. ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended, as well as different platforms, may have different settings or save procedures. The community wiki’s server configuration reference covers both games, but consult the relevant edition and platform guidance before using specific values or file instructions.

Start with Single Player if privacy, offline play, and control over your pace matter most. If you want a shared world, other players, or multiplayer competition, look at server modes instead; PvE avoids direct player-versus-player damage, while PvP allows players to damage or kill one another and damage another tribe’s buildings or creatures.
