Choose the EA app if you want the game in EA’s own library or plan to access it through EA Play Pro. “Origin” is no longer EA’s current PC and Mac client; it has been replaced by the EA app.
Steam or the EA app: which fits your setup?
| Your priority | Better fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the game in your Steam library and launch without the EA app | Steam | EA says the Steam version does not need the EA app, but does require an EA Account. EA’s Battlefield 6 guide and Steam’s listing describe the relevant requirements. |
| Use EA’s own game library and client | EA app | Origin has been replaced by the EA app on PC and Mac, according to EA’s EA app page. |
| Play through EA Play Pro | EA app | EA directs EA Play Pro members to the EA app for Battlefield 6. Eligibility depends on membership level and current subscription terms; check the included edition before subscribing. EA Help |
| Keep progress associated with the intended EA identity | Either | Progress is tied to the EA Account, not simply to which PC storefront you choose. Confirm the correct account is linked before playing. EA Help |
The practical trade-off is storefront and launcher preference, not a proven performance difference. No stable price winner is established: compare Steam and EA’s current prices in your region when you are ready to buy, since discounts and availability can change. EA describes Steam and the EA app as separate PC storefront options, so linking accounts does not convert a purchase in one store into a license in the other. EA’s purchase page
What “Origin” means now
Origin is the outdated part of the question. EA says the EA app replaced Origin on PC and Mac. The meaningful choice for a new PC purchase is therefore Steam versus the EA app—not Steam versus a current Origin client. EA’s EA app page
Check your EA Account before launching
Battlefield 6 requires an EA Account, and EA says progress is stored through that account. If you played the game’s beta or Battlefield 2042’s Road to Battlefield 6, EA advises using the same EA Account so you retain the expected association with your progress. EA Help

- Sign in to the EA Account you intend to use for the game.
- Check the connected accounts and make sure the Steam account, if applicable, is linked to the intended EA Account.
- Launch the game only after confirming the account connection; avoid unlinking or switching accounts as a troubleshooting shortcut.
EA warns that unlinking can affect purchases, progress, or access. Its Battlefield 6 guidance also says an old Steam link must have existed for at least 12 months before it can be moved to a new Steam account, and limits account switching to three times in a rolling year. These are account procedures, so check EA’s live help instructions before making a change. EA Help · EA account-linking guidance

The no-EA-app exception is specific to EA’s Battlefield 6 guidance for the Steam version. EA’s general EA app page says the app is required for EA games on PC, so do not apply the Battlefield 6 rule to every older Battlefield release. Before buying an older title, check that exact game’s current Steam listing and EA requirements. Battlefield 6 guidance · EA app information
