What happens when you pour Chroma into the fountain?
The fountain in Red Woods asks for four cumulative donations. Game8 and Gameranx report the same amounts and reward:

The first three donations trigger brief lines from an unknown voice, according to Game8’s guide. The final payment brings Benisseur out of the ground and awards the level 20 Recovery Picto. Its Lumina effect restores 10% health at the start of a turn, as described by Game8. Gameranx also confirms the four donation amounts and the Picto reward.
Do you need all 90,000 Chroma at once?
No. Gameranx reports that you can donate what you have, leave, and return when you have earned more. The full 90,000 is the total commitment for all four steps, not an amount you must save before starting.

Should you fight Benisseur?
Separate the donation decision from the fight. The sources say the final donation reveals Benisseur and awards the Recovery Picto; they do not establish that fighting him is required to receive it.
Game8 places Blanche in The Fountain and warns that killing Benisseur affects her questline. Its guide says killing friendly Nevrons angers Blanche, while sparing them leads to a reward. If you want to preserve that questline outcome, do not kill him; the guide does not establish further details about the consequences.

When should you visit Red Woods?
Game8 describes Red Woods as an optional overworld area. The available guides do not establish an ideal act, level, or earliest point in the campaign to complete the fountain, so there is no evidence-based level recommendation here.
