The cost depends on how you enchant: an enchanting table uses experience points and lapis lazuli, while an anvil’s level cost depends on the operation and the item’s prior anvil work. If you already have enchanted diamond gear, you can upgrade it to netherite and keep its enchantments, rather than paying to apply them again.
What does “cheaper to enchant” mean?
Minecraft has several routes to enchanted gear, and they use different resources. The available sources do not give a universal diamond-versus-netherite price comparison across items, editions, and versions. A useful comparison must hold the method, desired enchantments, and—when using an anvil—the item’s prior work constant.
| Method | What it costs | What that means for diamond vs. netherite |
|---|---|---|
| Enchanting table | Experience points and lapis lazuli, as described by Microsoft Learn’s enchantments introduction. | The cited sources do not establish a universal material-based price difference. |
| Librarian enchanted book | Emeralds to obtain the book, according to Microsoft Learn. | This is a way to acquire an enchanted book, not a direct comparison of enchanting diamond and netherite items. |
| Anvil with a book or another item | Experience levels; the cost varies with the operation and prior anvil work, as covered in the Minecraft Wiki’s anvil mechanics guide and enchantments guide. | Compare the same enchantments on items with the same anvil history. The cited references do not establish a universal material surcharge. |
| Smithing-table upgrade | A diamond item is upgraded using a netherite ingot, according to Minecraft’s netherite ingot article. | This is a separate upgrade resource cost, not an enchantment cost. Existing enchantments are preserved. |
Does netherite cost more XP to enchant?
The cited official sources say netherite items can be enchanted normally, but do not publish a direct statistic showing that enchanting netherite costs more or less than enchanting diamond. Anvil costs are sensitive to the specific operation and an item’s previous anvil work, so a result from one item or sequence should not be treated as a universal material comparison.
For a specific save, compare the same type of item, the same enchantments, the same method, and the same anvil history. If using an enchanting table, compare like-for-like conditions in the same game edition and version; the sources here do not establish exact table odds or prices for every version.

Should you enchant diamond gear before upgrading it?
If you have diamond gear you want to keep, enchanting it before upgrading is a practical option: Minecraft’s official article says a smithing-table upgrade preserves the item’s durability, enchantments, and custom name. The upgrade does not require you to reapply those enchantments. The netherite ingot is an additional upgrade resource, but it should not be counted as an enchantment fee.
Mojang’s lead designer Jens Bergensten described the upgrade approach as a way to retain diamond’s value while adding a new material: “Eventually, we came up with the idea that netherite could be used as a material to upgrade your current equipment, and not just as an independent resource used to create its own tools and armor. That way we would maintain the value of diamond while also adding something new!” Minecraft’s article on the netherite ingot also states that “Durability, enchantments, and any custom names are preserved.”
