For most parties, side with Sovereign Spaw. Spaw’s route preserves the existing myconid colony, avoids replacing its leader with a coup, and still leaves you able to pursue the duergar objective and the Nere follow-up. Choose Sovereign Glut if you specifically want Winter’s Clutches, the darker takeover storyline, or the New Management inspiration associated with supporting his coup.
What this choice is about
Ebonlake Grotto is the myconid colony in the Underdark, led by Sovereign Spaw. Spaw asks you to eliminate the duergar threatening the colony. After that conflict, the displaced Sovereign Glut explains that duergar destroyed his own circle and asks you to help overthrow Spaw.
You can refuse Glut, expose his plan to Spaw, or accept the coup and attack Spaw. Glut’s own claim is blunt: “I am the danger, and I am the cure. they erased my people; I will erase theirs.”
What happens on each route
Side with Spaw
Reject Glut’s proposal or reveal his treachery to Spaw. Glut becomes the enemy, and Spaw and the colony fight him. Once Glut is defeated, Spaw remains sovereign and the colony continues under its existing leadership.

Glut’s route grants Winter’s Clutches. It also supports the Haunted One inspiration New Management, making this the route for players who want the takeover outcome rather than continuity for Spaw’s colony.
Rewards and consequences compared
| Choice | Documented result |
|---|---|
| Side with Spaw | Spaw remains leader; Glut’s inventory becomes available: Hastening Spores, Lump of Myconid Flesh ×3, Poison Spore, Scroll of Blur, Scroll of Hold Person, and Swarming Toadstool. |
| Side with Glut | Spaw is defeated, the colony accepts Glut, and you receive Winter’s Clutches. |
| Either route | After the duergar are dealt with, the chosen sovereign can begin Deliver Nere’s Head. |
| Character-specific inspiration | Warmonger is associated with the Charlatan background when the coup is staged and a side is chosen. Supporting Glut’s takeover is associated with Haunted One’s New Management. |
Does either choice stop the Nere quest?
No. Both the Spaw and Glut outcomes retain the follow-up to deliver Nere’s head once the duergar situation has been resolved. The Nere objective therefore should not determine which sovereign you support.

Can siding with Glut break a paladin oath?
Yes, according to the quest documentation, paladins sworn to the Oath of the Ancients or Oath of Vengeance break their oath if they side with Glut. If you are playing either of those oaths, Spaw is the safer choice unless you deliberately want to accept the oath consequence.
Does quest order affect the rewards?
It can. If you defeat the duergar before speaking with Spaw, revealing Glut’s treachery may complete both quests at once, but Spaw may then be unable to grant the Bliss Spores reward. Treat this as order-sensitive and potentially patch-sensitive: speak with Spaw before resolving the duergar conflict if preserving access to that reward matters to your run.
Which side should you choose?
Choose Spaw when you want
- The existing myconid colony to remain intact under its current sovereign.
- The less destructive resolution and Spaw’s route-specific inventory.
- To avoid the documented Ancients or Vengeance paladin oath break.
- To keep the Nere follow-up while avoiding a leadership coup.
Choose Glut when you want
- Winter’s Clutches, which is exclusive to his route.
- The coup and darker role-playing outcome.
- Haunted One’s New Management inspiration.
- To replace Spaw after Glut’s circle was destroyed.
The practical default is Spaw: you keep the colony’s established leadership and do not sacrifice the Nere follow-up. Glut is the better fit when his exclusive item, his revenge-driven storyline, or the associated inspiration outweighs that stability.
