Kill and report the Scoia’tael for the captain’s full stated reward: 30 crowns and a Letter of Safe Conduct. Spare and report them to let them live and still get the letter, but no crowns. Spare them and conceal what you found to keep Geralt’s promise to Vernossiel; the captain gives no reward. The best choice depends on whether you prioritize the group’s survival, Geralt’s word, or the captain’s payment.
Spoilers for the Woodland Beast contract.
What is the Woodland Beast choice?
The contract claims a monster is attacking Redanian transports near Novigrad. Geralt follows the trail and discovers that the attackers are Scoia’tael partisans led by Vernossiel—not a monster. After confronting the group, you can fight them or let them go. If you spare them, a second decision follows: report their involvement to the captain or conceal it.

The Witcher Wiki’s quest overview describes the setup and branches; GameBanshee’s walkthrough details the reward outcomes.
What does each choice give you?
| Choice | Report to the captain? | Stated immediate result |
|---|---|---|
| Kill the Scoia’tael | Yes | 30 crowns and a Letter of Safe Conduct, after showing a Squirrel Tail as proof. |
| Spare the Scoia’tael | Yes | A Letter of Safe Conduct, but no crowns. If Geralt promised Vernossiel he would keep their location secret, she may later treat the report as betrayal. |
| Spare the Scoia’tael | No; tell the captain you found nothing | No reward from the captain; Geralt keeps the secret. |
GameBanshee says the Letter of Safe Conduct may be needed for Thou Shalt Not Pass. That makes the spare-and-report branch a way to obtain the letter without killing the group, though it does not preserve Geralt’s promise if he made one.

Which option should you choose?
Kill and report for the full captain reward
Choose this if you want the largest stated immediate payment and do not intend to spare the partisans. The captain awards the letter and 30 crowns after Geralt presents the Squirrel Tail as proof.
Spare and report to get the letter
Choose this if you want the Scoia’tael to live but also want the Letter of Safe Conduct. You receive no crowns. The Witcher Wiki’s Vernossiel entry reports that she may confront Geralt near Glory Gate and try to kill him if she believes he betrayed her; treat that as a reported quest consequence, not a broader story outcome.

Spare and conceal what you found
Choose this if keeping Geralt’s word and hiding the group’s location matter more than the captain’s reward. Tell the captain you found nothing; he gives Geralt no reward in this branch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the choice affect the wider story?
The Witcher Wiki’s quest notes say Vernossiel and her squad leave their camp after the contract. Depending on the outcome, they leave on their own or appear to be caught in a Redanian ambush. The available quest accounts do not establish a broader main-story or war outcome from this decision, so it is safest to weigh the documented consequences: the group’s fate, Geralt’s promise, the later reported confrontation, and the captain’s reward.
