Should You Tell Sebastian the Truth in Hogwarts Legacy? Every Choice Explained

Usually, no. In the early Undercroft conversation with Sebastian Sallow, telling him the truth or giving a vague answer leads to the same reported quest outcome. The truth option only makes the conversation longer. That result does not apply to every Sebastian quest, however: later choices can affect when you learn an Unforgivable Curse, alter an immediate scene, preserve another chance to learn a spell, or determine which version of Sebastian’s final quest follows.

Spoilers ahead: the sections below discuss Crucio, Imperio, Ominis, and Sebastian’s eventual fate.

The early Undercroft conversation: truth or a vague answer?

If you are deciding what to say to Sebastian in the Undercroft, either response is safe from a quest-outcome perspective. Game8 reports that telling Sebastian the truth and choosing a less specific answer produce the same outcome for that quest. The difference is conversational: the truthful response extends the exchange, while the vague response gets you through it more quickly.

That makes this an expression-of-character decision rather than a branching-story decision. Choose the answer that fits the witch or wizard you are role-playing, or pick the shorter exchange if you are concerned only with efficiency. Nothing in the reported result indicates that this early choice locks you out of Sebastian’s later questline or changes its ending.

Readers often generalize this scene to every Sebastian dialogue prompt, but the questline uses several different kinds of decisions. Some choices only change dialogue or the staging of the next scene. Others determine whether a spell is added to your abilities at that point. One later decision changes the version of Sebastian’s concluding quest.

What the game’s morality system means for Sebastian choices

Hogwarts Legacy’s official FAQ says: “Hogwarts Legacy does not have a morality system, but players will encounter various quests and storylines that will influence the witch or wizard they choose to become.” That distinction is useful here. The game does not assign a single visible good-or-evil score that turns every Sebastian answer into a universal alignment test.

Instead, Sebastian’s storyline presents local consequences. A response can change how a conversation feels without changing its quest state; a decision involving a curse can change access to that spell; and the choice in In the Shadow of Fate changes the final quest version you receive. Treat each prompt on its own terms rather than assuming that every sympathetic or disapproving answer has the same mechanical weight.

Decision guide: what each Sebastian choice changes

Decision Reported consequence What to consider
Tell Sebastian the truth or answer vaguely in the early Undercroft conversation The conversation length changes; the quest outcome remains the same. Dialogue flavor and role-play.
Choose whether to learn Crucio in In the Shadow of the Study Choosing to learn it gives access at that point. A later opportunity is reported if you initially decline. When you want the spell, not a permanent story alignment.
Choose who casts Crucio The immediate scene and temporary health effect can differ; no lasting story difference is reported. Role-play and the short-term condition shown in the scene.
Side with Sebastian or Ominis in the Imperio discussion If you have not learned Imperio, siding with Sebastian can preserve another chance to learn it. If you already know it, the choice does not change the outcome. Whether Imperio is already in your spell collection.
Decide Sebastian’s fate in In the Shadow of Fate The choice determines which version of his final quest follows. The direction of the story’s resolution.

Crucio: learning it and deciding who casts it

Declining or learning the curse

The Crucio prompt in In the Shadow of the Study is more consequential than the early Undercroft answer because it concerns spell access. If you choose to learn Crucio, you learn it during that sequence. If you decline, Game8 reports that another opportunity to learn it remains later. Declining therefore postpones access rather than establishing a permanent refusal, according to that guide.

The practical question is timing. Players who want Crucio immediately should accept it in the study sequence. Players avoiding the spell for role-play reasons, or who simply do not need it yet, can decline without assuming that the spell is gone forever. The evidence establishes a later opportunity, but it does not establish that every platform, patch, or save state presents the prompt with identical wording.

  • SURVIVE IN A VIBRANT OPEN WORLD: You’ll create your own adventure as you journey explore the open world and what lies beneath its surface, by foot, mech, jet-ski, air-balloon and more.

Choosing who casts Crucio

The same sequence asks you to choose between casting Crucio on Sebastian and asking Sebastian to cast it on you. Game8 reports no lasting story difference between those options. The immediate scene differs, and the temporary health effect can differ as well, so the choice still has an in-the-moment consequence even though it does not create a separate long-term branch.

Use this prompt for role-play or for the immediate experience you prefer, not as a way to secure a different ending. The reported distinction is specifically between the short-term scene and the absence of a lasting story change.

Imperio and the choice between Sebastian and Ominis

The Imperio discussion is another spell-access decision, but its consequence depends on whether Imperio is already known. Game8 reports that siding with Sebastian can provide another chance to learn Imperio when you have not learned it yet. If Imperio is already in your spell collection, choosing Sebastian or Ominis does not change the outcome.

That creates two different cases:

  • You do not know Imperio: siding with Sebastian can preserve another opportunity to learn it.
  • You already know Imperio: the choice has no reported outcome change, so select the response that fits your relationship with Sebastian and Ominis.

This is why “Should I side with Ominis or Sebastian?” cannot be answered without knowing the spell’s status in your playthrough. The question is not a universal morality test; it is partly a check on whether you still need an opportunity to acquire Imperio.

Sebastian’s fate: the choice that changes the final quest version

The decision in In the Shadow of Fate has a different level of importance. There, choosing whether to turn Sebastian in determines which version of his final quest follows. Unlike the Undercroft conversation, this is not merely a longer or shorter exchange. Unlike the Crucio casting prompt, it is not limited to an immediate scene or temporary health effect. It changes the form of the quest resolution involving Sebastian.

Because this is the choice tied to the final quest version, postpone deciding until you are comfortable with the direction of Sebastian’s story. The available evidence establishes that the branch changes, but it does not support treating one option as a universally correct gameplay choice. Turning him in or leaving his fate otherwise reflects the kind of witch or wizard you are choosing to play, consistent with the official FAQ’s explanation that quests and storylines influence that identity without using a formal morality meter.

A practical way to make each decision

  1. Identify the scene. First determine whether you are in the early Undercroft conversation, In the Shadow of the Study, the Imperio discussion, or In the Shadow of Fate. Similar-sounding dialogue questions belong to different decision categories.
  2. Ask whether the prompt concerns a spell. If it involves learning Crucio or Imperio, treat spell access as the primary consequence. Check whether you already know the spell before deciding.
  3. Separate immediate effects from lasting branches. The Crucio caster choice can alter the immediate scene and temporary health effect without changing the later story. Do not read a short-term effect as proof of a different ending.
  4. Use role-play for dialogue-only choices. In the early Undercroft exchange, truth and vagueness lead to the same reported quest outcome, so choose based on the character you want to portray.
  5. Reserve your biggest story consideration for In the Shadow of Fate. The turn-in decision determines which final Sebastian quest version follows and therefore deserves more thought than the earlier conversational prompt.

How large is Sebastian’s questline?

Game8 counts 13 quests in Sebastian’s questline. That is a guide’s descriptive count, not a statistic showing how many outcomes exist or how often players choose one branch. The count helps explain why the phrase “what you say to Sebastian” covers several separate moments rather than one continuous decision tree.

Within that sequence, the evidence supports four distinct axes: conversation length, spell access, immediate scene effects, and final quest resolution. Keeping those axes separate prevents a harmless dialogue variation from being mistaken for a permanent consequence.

What is and is not established about platform and patch behavior

The available information comes from published quest guides and the official FAQ. It does not claim firsthand testing across every platform or patch, and it does not verify that every save-state flag or line of dialogue is identical in every version. If an exact prompt, save-state interaction, or patch-specific behavior matters to your playthrough, follow the wording shown in your game and consult a current walkthrough for your platform.

No named study statistic or publisher statistic directly measures the consequences of Sebastian’s dialogue. The useful conclusions are therefore practical guide findings: the early truth-or-vague choice has the same reported quest outcome; Crucio and Imperio choices can affect spell access; the Crucio caster choice changes the immediate experience without a reported lasting story difference; and the fate decision changes the final quest version.
