Usually, no. Upgrade your Town Hall when the next level fits your goal and your offense can handle it—not just because the upgrade button is available. You do not have to max every building and wall first, but moving up without usable troops, spells, Army Camps and heroes can make farming harder.
Choose a pace that fits your goal
There is no single best upgrade pace for every Clash of Clans account. The choice is between completing most upgrades at each Town Hall and moving on earlier to keep progression efficient. Neither route is automatically right: consider what you enjoy, how ready your army is, and whether builders or the Laboratory would otherwise be idle.

Clash Ninja’s unofficial progression guide describes the decision in similar terms: completion-focused players may max buildings, troops, heroes and walls, while efficiency-focused players may move up when building and wall upgrades are done and resources are building up despite ongoing Hero or Laboratory upgrades. That guide gives level-specific advice through Town Hall 15; treat its checklists as guidance for those levels, not universal requirements or a current plan for higher Town Halls. Check your offensive readiness before upgrading
Your ability to farm is a practical test of whether you are ready to move up. Before upgrading, ask whether your army can consistently win loot at your current level and whether it will still work while you unlock and improve the next level’s options.

- Army Camps: Upgrade them so your army has the capacity to support your farming strategy.
- Farming troops and spells: Invest in a reliable army and the spells it depends on, rather than spreading upgrades across troops you rarely use.
- Heroes: Bring key heroes to a useful level for your stage. You do not necessarily need to finish every Hero upgrade before advancing.
- Equipment: Factor in the equipment and ore upgrades available to your account, but do not assume an unlock alone will make an underpowered army effective.
Clash Ninja warns that advancing without core upgrades—including farming troops and spells, Army Camps and basic Hero levels—can make farming more difficult. It links that risk partly to reduced loot from lower-Town-Hall targets; do not rely on a specific loot amount or threshold without checking the current game mechanics.
Weigh idle time against the costs of rushing
Moving up sooner can make sense if your builders or Laboratory would otherwise sit idle, or if resources are piling up while important upgrades are already underway. But avoid treating “use every builder” as the only measure of efficient progression. If your army is too weak to farm reliably, a shorter wait now can mean a harder climb afterward.

Completion has a different benefit: it gives you more time to strengthen defenses and learn the strategies available at a level before dealing with the next one. This can matter especially to newer players or anyone who values war readiness and a balanced base. On the other hand, maxing every wall and minor defense is not essential to every player’s plan. Decide which unfinished upgrades actually support how you play.
Consider what the next Town Hall unlocks
A new Town Hall can open systems that make advancing worthwhile. Supercell says the Blacksmith and Hero Equipment unlock at Town Hall 8; upgrading equipment uses ore. For an account that wants access to those systems, reaching the unlock has a concrete purpose—but it does not replace the need for an army that can earn resources.

Requirements and progression systems change over time. In its Town Hall 17 update, dated 25 November 2024, Supercell stated: “Maximum Hero upgrade levels now depend on the level of the Hero Hall.” Check the current in-game requirements for your level rather than relying on older level caps, costs or upgrade-time lists. A practical decision before you press Upgrade
- Name your goal. Decide whether you want to complete each level, progress efficiently, or rush with a specific plan.
- Test your farming army. Make sure your camps, key troops, spells and basic Hero levels let you earn resources consistently.
- Look at your queues and resources. If builders or the Laboratory are about to go unused, or resources are accumulating, moving up may be worthwhile—provided your offense is ready.
- Check the next level’s unlocks and prerequisites. Use the in-game upgrade screens for current requirements; older guides may not reflect later updates.
- Choose what you are willing to leave behind. If you care about a balanced base, finish more defenses and other upgrades. If not, leave lower-priority work for later rather than delaying automatically.
Clash Ninja’s detailed examples include short early Town Hall levels and level-specific priorities, but they are unofficial recommendations and extend through Town Hall 15. Use them as context, not as a mandatory checklist for every account.

Speed-up items do not decide your route
A Book of Heroes instantly completes a Hero or Pet upgrade timer, according to Supercell’s Magic Items support page. It can save time on an upgrade you have chosen to make; it does not determine whether you should move to the next Town Hall or make an unready army effective.
