Should You Use Java 17 or 18 for Minecraft?

Java 17 is the straightforward choice for Minecraft 1.18, but newer releases can require newer runtimes: Minecraft 1.20.5 requires Java 21.

For Minecraft: Java Edition 1.18, Java 17 is the straightforward choice. Mojang says that release uses Java 17 and that custom Java setups or third-party launchers need Java 17 or later. Java 18 meets that minimum, but it is not required or identified as preferable. For Minecraft 1.20.5, use Java 21 instead: that release explicitly requires it. If you use the official Minecraft Launcher with its default setup, let it install the runtime for your game version.

Which Java version does Minecraft need?

It depends on the Minecraft release. Java requirements can change between releases, so check the exact game version before installing a runtime or changing launcher settings.

Minecraft setup Runtime guidance What Mojang says
1.18 with the default Minecraft Launcher Let the Launcher install its runtime The Launcher downloads and installs the correct version. Mojang’s 1.18 release notes.
1.18 with a custom Java setup or third-party launcher Java 17 or later; Java 17 is the stated baseline The game uses Java 17, and custom setups or third-party launchers need Java 17 or above. Mojang’s 1.18 release notes.
1.20.5 Java 21 The release requires Java 21 and includes Microsoft OpenJDK 21.0.3. Mojang’s 1.20.5 release notes.
Another release Check that release’s official notes and your launcher’s runtime setting The requirement is release-specific; the 1.18 and 1.20.5 notes specify different Java versions.

Should you choose Java 17 or Java 18 for Minecraft 1.18?

Choose Java 17 if you are setting a custom runtime for 1.18. It is the version Mojang names as the one the game uses. Java 18 satisfies the release notes’ “Java 17 or above” minimum, but Mojang does not say that Java 18 is needed or better. There is no basis here to expect a performance improvement from choosing Java 18.

Do you need to install Java yourself?

Not if you are using the official Minecraft Launcher’s default setup for 1.18: Mojang says the Launcher downloads and installs the correct version. You may need to manage the runtime yourself if you have configured a custom Java path or use a third-party launcher. In those cases, match the runtime to the Minecraft release rather than assuming one Java installation works for every version.

Why does a launcher say you need a different Java version?

First check the Minecraft version selected by the launcher, then check which Java runtime that profile is configured to use. A runtime that is suitable for one release may not meet another release’s requirement. For example, 1.18 names Java 17, while 1.20.5 requires Java 21. If you use the official Launcher, restore its default runtime configuration if you changed it; for a third-party launcher, follow its runtime-selection controls and the game release’s stated requirement.

Keep Java requirements separate from system requirements

Minecraft’s hardware requirements do not determine which Java runtime a release needs. Mojang’s system-requirements article, published July 21, 2026, addresses hardware and notes that performance and visual quality are not guaranteed below its updated minimums; it should not be used to infer Java compatibility. See Minecraft Java Edition System Requirements.

Operating-system support is another separate issue: Minecraft Help says that, as of March 2025, Windows 10 or macOS 10.15 is required for online play and continued updates through the Launcher. That guidance does not change the Java version required by a particular game release. See Minecraft Help’s Java Edition system requirements.
