The 60-second answer
shscrap.dll is the old Microsoft Shell Scrap Object Handler. It supported .shs Shell Scrap files, which were created by dragging content from applications such as Word or Excel onto the Windows desktop.

Microsoft removed the Scrap feature from Windows Vista and later, so Windows 10 and Windows 11 should not normally contain or require shscrap.dll. Microsoft’s Windows Q&A guidance confirms that Scrap files were removed beginning with Windows Vista.
The safest fix is to identify the program requesting the file, then repair, update, or reinstall that program using its official installer. Do not download a loose copy of shscrap.dll from a DLL website. A random file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the application requires other legacy components as well.

What shscrap.dll actually does
shscrap.dll was part of older Windows releases, particularly Windows 95 through the Windows XP era. Its role was to handle Shell Scrap and OLE scrap objects.
A .shs file was not a normal Word document, spreadsheet, or text file. Microsoft described a scrap as content dragged from part of a Word or Excel document onto the desktop. The result was a special OLE object that could later be dragged into a compatible document.
That history explains why the file may appear in an old program’s error message even though it is absent from a current Windows installation. The application may have been written with the assumption that the Shell Scrap feature would always exist.
shscrap.dll is not:
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET assembly
- A device driver
- A current Microsoft redistributable package
- A normal component of modern Microsoft Office
There is no current Microsoft redistributable that users should install to add this file to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
What causes the error
An old application expects a removed Windows feature
This is the most likely cause on Windows 10 or Windows 11. An old application may load shscrap.dll during startup even when the program does not visibly mention .shs files.
The error may appear after launching:
- An old Windows-era application
- A legacy document utility
- A program installed from old media
- A startup helper belonging to software that is no longer fully installed
The message does not prove that Windows itself is damaged. It often identifies an obsolete dependency inside the application.
You are trying to recover an old .shs file
If the error appeared while opening or converting an old Scrap file, the real goal may be data recovery rather than DLL repair.
Modern Windows and current Office versions generally do not provide the old Scrap handler. Recover the original Word or Excel document, a backup, or an exported copy first. Treat an old .shs file as potentially unsafe because scrap objects could contain executable content and historically used misleading or hidden extensions.

A legacy Windows installation has a damaged system file
On a Windows XP-era installation, the file may have been deleted or corrupted. This is different from Windows 10 or Windows 11 intentionally lacking the old feature.
Use original Windows installation media or the applicable Windows repair process for that installation. Do not replace a protected system file with a download from an unverified source.
Antivirus quarantined an old copy
Antivirus software may quarantine a historically legitimate shscrap.dll, especially when it is found alongside an old .shs file. That does not automatically mean the detection is false. Scrap objects have a genuine security history.
Check the detection name, file path, digital signature, and source before considering restoration.

Do this before copying files or repairing Windows.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the text around the error. The application name may appear in the title bar or immediately before the DLL message.
Write down:
- The application name
- The executable name, if shown
- The full file path, if shown
- Whether the error appears at startup or only when opening a file
If the message appears when Windows starts:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry associated with the application.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
- Note the folder and executable name.
Also inspect Settings > System > Notifications, Settings > Apps > Startup, and any scheduled task associated with abandoned legacy software.
Use the application folder
Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties. On the Shortcut tab, check Target. The target identifies the executable Windows is trying to launch.
Do not assume that a file named shscrap.dll belongs in the application folder. First establish which program is loading it.

Use Process Monitor if the program is unclear
If the error flashes during startup and does not identify the application, Microsoft Sysinternals Process Monitor can help trace file-loading activity. Filter for the path or filename shscrap.dll, then reproduce the error and inspect the Process Name field.
If the error returns after reinstalling the apparent application, this step can reveal a leftover launcher, scheduled task, or helper program that still requests the file.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the requesting application
For an old program on Windows 10 or Windows 11, this is the safest first repair.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program associated with the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Repair option:
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the program’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the latest version from the application developer’s official site or use the original trusted installation media.
- Install it again.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If the installer offers compatibility settings, right-click the installer, choose Properties > Compatibility, select an appropriate older Windows mode, and run the installer as administrator. Compatibility mode cannot recreate the removed Shell Scrap feature, but it can help an otherwise functional legacy application start.
A successful repair means the program opens without the shscrap.dll message. If the same error returns immediately, the installed version probably has a hard dependency on the removed feature and needs a replacement, patched release, or legacy environment.
Fix 3: Recover the source document instead of the DLL
If you are working with an old .shs file, do not start by searching for shscrap.dll.
Try these steps:
- Make a copy of the
.shsfile. - Keep the original unchanged and stored offline.
- Search for the Word or Excel document from which the scrap was created.
- Check backups, old removable media, email attachments, and document archives.
- Scan the copied file and the storage device with current antivirus software.
- If the data is essential, use a trusted offline legacy Windows environment for examination.
- Avoid opening the file on a primary work computer or a system containing sensitive data.
Microsoft’s historical documentation describes Scrap files as objects intended to be dragged into compatible documents, not opened like ordinary documents. Modern Office may not support that workflow.
If the file contains important information, a legacy virtual machine is safer than installing an unknown DLL into the host operating system. Keep the virtual machine isolated from the network, use trusted installation media, and copy recovered text or documents out only after scanning them.

Fix 4: Run Windows repair commands only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM are appropriate when Windows has broader system-file problems, such as several built-in applications failing or repeated corruption reports. They are not a way to restore a feature that Microsoft intentionally removed from Windows Vista and later.
On supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
If Windows reports that it repaired files, test the application. If both commands complete successfully but the application still requests shscrap.dll, the missing component is probably an application compatibility issue, not general Windows corruption.

Manually repeating SFC and DISM can be tedious when you do not know which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while the repair itself is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the requesting application remains the definitive fix for an app-specific dependency.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine carefully
If antivirus reported or removed the file:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection involving
shscrap.dll. - Record the original path, detection name, and affected application.
- Do not select Allow on device until the source is verified.
- Run a Full scan.
- Scan the application’s installation media or backup separately.
Restore the file only when it came from trusted original Windows media or a verified system backup, its path is consistent with that installation, and the application genuinely requires it. If it came from a random download, delete it rather than restoring it.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the error is actually driver-related
shscrap.dll is not a device driver, so Device Manager is not a normal repair route for this error. Use it only if the same application also reports graphics, audio, storage, or other hardware failures.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a graphics or chipset device, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows does not find a suitable driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the program that requests shscrap.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy copying the DLL usually fails
Do not copy shscrap.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The application’s folder
- Any folder suggested by an unverified download page
A 32-bit legacy DLL is not interchangeable with a modern 64-bit Windows component. The System32 and SysWOW64 names are also easy to misunderstand: on 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is used for many 32-bit system binaries, but that does not mean an old DLL belongs there.
A file from a different Windows release may have incompatible exports, dependencies, or registration data. A fake file can also expose malicious code when the old application loads it.
Best Value
There is no verified Microsoft download page for a standalone modern shscrap.dll package. Use the original application installer, authentic Windows installation media, or a verified system backup instead.
Does regsvr32 fix shscrap.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for installing any DLL. Microsoft documents this behavior in its regsvr32 command reference.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not run:
regsvr32 shscrap.dll
against a random copy on Windows 10 or Windows 11. It may fail because of architecture, missing dependencies, absent registration entry points, or the intentional removal of the associated Windows feature. If an official legacy application installer requires registration, let that installer perform it.
When a virtual machine is the right solution
Use a properly isolated legacy Windows virtual machine when all of these conditions apply:
- The program is essential and has no current replacement.
- The program genuinely requires Shell Scrap support.
- You have valid installation media and licensing.
- The data or application can be kept away from the internet.
- You can scan files before moving them back to the host system.
A virtual machine is preferable to modifying Windows 10 or Windows 11 with an untrusted DLL. For valuable .shs data, recover the original document or export the contents into a modern format, then retire the legacy environment.
Frequently asked questions
Is shscrap.dll a Microsoft file?
Historically, yes. It was the Microsoft Windows Shell Scrap Object Handler. Its presence on an old authentic Windows installation does not mean a copy downloaded today is genuine.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should Windows 11 contain shscrap.dll?
No. Windows 11 should not normally need this removed legacy Shell Scrap component. A program requesting it is likely obsolete or incorrectly assuming that an older Windows feature exists.
Is there a 64-bit version?
The commonly documented historical component is treated as an old 32-bit Windows component. Do not assume that a 64-bit build exists or that a file labelled “64-bit” online is authentic.
Can SFC restore it?
SFC can repair protected files that belong to the installed Windows version. It should not be expected to restore a feature intentionally removed from modern Windows.
What if the error appears after reinstalling the application?
Identify the executable loading the file with its error details or Process Monitor. Then check for an abandoned startup entry, scheduled task, helper utility, or an application version that is incompatible with current Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is it safe to open an .shs file?
Treat it as unsafe until scanned and examined in an isolated, trusted legacy environment. Scrap objects have a history of being used to conceal or carry executable content.
