“The program can’t start because cnbjopa1.dll is missing”

The error returns after every clean installation
Inspect installation logs, Event Viewer, security software, and the driver architecture.
What cnbjopa1.dll is
Public file records describe cnbjopa1.dll as Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software associated with CANON INC. Available records identify copies as 32-bit and report that they can appear inside Canon printer-driver packages staged in the Windows Driver Store.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the safest and most likely fix when the error affects printing or Canon printer software.
Remove the existing printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Return to Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Canon software, MP Drivers, printer utilities, or the printer’s model name.
- Remove the relevant Canon software.
- Restart Windows.
If the printer is not shown in Settings, continue with the Canon software removal and restart.
Download and install the replacement package
Use Canon’s official Software and Drivers support page. Select the exact printer model and the installed Windows version before downloading anything. Do not choose a DLL from a file-download page.
Then:
- Turn off the printer.
- Run the Canon driver installer you downloaded.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Connect or turn on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows if setup asks you to do so.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.

Public records for this file list 32-bit copies. A 32-bit printer component must be loaded by a compatible process. Do not replace it with a differently versioned or supposedly 64-bit DLL selected by file size.
The practical solution is to use the Canon package that matches the printer model and Windows installation. Windows 64-bit can still run some 32-bit printer software, but an incompatible driver package can fail even when the printer itself is detected.

- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event mentioning
cnbjopa1.dll, Canon software, or the printer installer. - Open the event and read the detection name, file path, and action taken.
- Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar.

A safer recovery is to remove the incomplete installation and reinstall the entire driver from Canon. Never overwrite the quarantined file with a downloaded copy.
Fix 3: Remove a stale printer and driver reference
A failed uninstall can leave Windows with a printer queue or driver reference that still requests cnbjopa1.dll.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove every unused entry for the affected Canon printer.
- Open Installed apps.
- Remove the related Canon printer software.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current model-specific Canon driver.
- Add the printer again and print a test page.
If the old entry remains, open Control Panel from Start search and select View devices and printers. Right-click the obsolete printer and select Remove device.

Fix 4: Install Windows updates and repair Windows components
Use this step when Windows itself has installation problems, several unrelated applications are failing, or the Canon installer cannot complete.
Install updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Check for updates again until no further applicable updates are offered.
Windows Update may install a generic printer driver. That can restore basic printing, but it may not provide all Canon-specific features. If you need scanning, maintenance tools, borderless printing, or other model-specific functions, reinstall Canon’s package afterward.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon driver installer again.
DISM repairs the Windows component source used for servicing. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither tool is a replacement for the Canon driver package, so a successful scan does not necessarily restore cnbjopa1.dll.

Do not download or register the DLL separately
Avoid downloading cnbjopa1.dll from random DLL websites. A replacement can contain malware, belong to a different Canon package, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency or driver file is missing.
Do not copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64C:WindowsSystem32DriverStore
The Driver Store must be managed through the driver package and its installation information.

regsvr32 is also normally the wrong repair. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. There is no evidence that cnbjopa1.dll is such a component. Running:
regsvr32 cnbjopa1.dll
may produce an entry-point error and will not rebuild a printer driver. Microsoft describes the utility in its regsvr32 documentation.
If the error appears in a non-printing application
Look at the complete error dialog and note the executable named in it. If the application is unrelated to printing:
- Check whether
cnbjopa1.dllexists in that application’s installation folder. - Do not replace the file in that folder with a download.
- Reinstall the Canon printer software.
- Remove unused Canon utilities and old printer entries.
- Repair or reinstall the unrelated application only if its own files are damaged.
If the printer still works, the message may come from a leftover startup utility, queue, or application reference rather than the active print path.

- Press Windows + R.

Check Event Viewer
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Check errors recorded at the time the message appeared.
- Note the executable that requested the DLL and the stated module or dependency failure.
A message saying the module could not be found does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
Test another Windows profile
Create a temporary local Windows user and test the printer there. If the error disappears, the original profile may contain a stale startup entry or application-specific reference.
Consider System Restore
Use System Restore when the issue began immediately after a driver or Windows change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Search Start for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review the affected programs.
- Complete the restore and test printing.
System Restore should not replace a clean official driver installation when that package is available.
