shsvcs.dll is the file named in errors such as “shsvcs.dll was not found” or “shsvcs.dll could not be loaded.” It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a Visual C++ or DirectX runtime.
The safest repair is to restore Windows component files through Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website, copy a file from another computer, or register it with regsvr32 as a first step.
The error messages you may see
Windows or an application may display wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because shsvcs.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “shsvcs.dll cannot be located.”
- “The file shsvcs.dll could not be loaded.”
- “Windows Shell Services Dll has stopped working.”
- A startup or service crash identifying
svchost.exe_ShellHWDetection. - An application error stating that
shsvcs.dllis “not designed to run on Windows.”
The wording helps identify the symptom, but it does not always identify the cause. A program may report this Windows DLL when the actual problem is damaged Windows components, a bad update, security software quarantine, or incompatible storage and hardware software.

The 60-second answer
- Restart Windows once.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- When DISM finishes, run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Restart the computer and test the affected program, device, AutoPlay event, or service again.
Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before scanning protected system files with SFC. This sequence restores the Windows-managed copy more safely than manually replacing shsvcs.dll.
What is shsvcs.dll?
shsvcs.dll is called Windows Shell Services Dll. It ships with the Microsoft Windows operating system and is published by Microsoft Corporation.
The file is associated especially with Shell Hardware Detection, whose service name is ShellHWDetection. That service handles Windows notifications for hardware events such as AutoPlay activity. On older Windows versions, the DLL was also associated with FastUserSwitchingCompatibility.

That is why an error may mention svchost.exe_ShellHWDetection instead of naming a normal desktop application.
This is a Windows component, not a private runtime that should normally be repaired by reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
Where should shsvcs.dll be located?
On a typical Windows installation, the native copy is under:
%SystemRoot%System32
Usually, %SystemRoot% is C:Windows, making the common path:
C:WindowsSystem32shsvcs.dll
On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit counterpart is normally under:
C:WindowsSysWOW64shsvcs.dll
The names can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains redirected 32-bit system files. Do not treat SysWOW64 as a second copy that can be deleted, and do not copy an x86 file into the native system directory.
Microsoft documents architecture-specific copies of Windows files. Exact versions and sizes vary by Windows release, architecture, language, and servicing update, so an old version table is not a reliable universal identification method.
Check the path and Microsoft signature
Before restoring a quarantined file or investigating malware, confirm where the file is located and whether Windows recognizes its publisher.
Check the file path
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter:
text
C:WindowsSystem32
- Search for
shsvcs.dll. - On a 64-bit installation, also check:
text
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A copy in an unrelated application folder, a temporary directory, or a user profile folder deserves more scrutiny. An unexpected path does not prove malware, but it is not the normal location for the Windows-managed copy.
Check the digital signature
- Right-click
shsvcs.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature, if present, and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A missing or invalid signature, an unexpected path, or an unrelated executable loading the file changes the troubleshooting priority. Run a security scan instead of downloading another copy.
Why shsvcs.dll may be missing or fail to load
The most common repair path is Windows servicing corruption, but several situations can produce the same message.
Damaged or missing Windows component files
A failed write, disk problem, interrupted update, cleanup utility, or unauthorized system change can damage a protected Windows file. DISM and SFC are designed for this class of problem.

A failed Windows update
If the problem appeared immediately after Windows Update, the update may have been incomplete or may have exposed a conflict with an existing driver or service. Pending updates can also leave Windows in an inconsistent state.
Antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a file after a detection or false positive. Restoration is not automatically safe. First confirm the path, Microsoft signature, detection details, and whether the file was associated with a legitimate Windows process.
Storage, scanner, backup, or driver software
Shell Hardware Detection interacts with hardware events. A third-party scanner package, storage provider, backup program, disk-management utility, or antivirus driver can cause a service crash involving shsvcs.dll.
A documented vendor case involved a Shell Hardware Detection fault and a storage provider. The remedy was updating the vendor software, not obtaining a replacement DLL.

Malware can delete, replace, or interfere with Windows components. It can also place a file with the same name in an unsafe directory.
Architecture or binary mismatch
A 32-bit and 64-bit Windows component are not interchangeable. A corrupt or incompatible binary may produce “not designed to run on Windows,” even when the file name appears correct.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
Windows Update may already contain a correction for damaged servicing files, a hardware-detection problem, or a compatibility issue.
- Press Windows key + I.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update in the left column.
- On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available quality, cumulative, driver, and servicing updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to the same page and check again until Windows reports that no further updates are available.
Test the original action after restarting. Try the application again, connect the affected hardware, or check whether the Shell Hardware Detection error returns.
Recommended Free Tools
If Windows Update itself fails, continue with DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly selecting Check for updates.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing, corrupt, or unloadable copy under the Windows system directories.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for replacement files. If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, continue with SFC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRun System File Checker
In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart Windows even if SFC reports that no violations were found, then test the original problem.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, do not copy shsvcs.dll from a download site. Run DISM again, restart, and repeat:
sfc /scannow
If Windows Update is damaged and DISM cannot find repair files, use a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the correct path to the matching repair source. The source must correspond appropriately to the installed Windows version and architecture.
Afterward, run SFC again and restart.
When repeatedly hunting through Windows repair steps becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; repair actions are completed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this Windows repair.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection history
If the file disappeared suddenly, especially after a security scan, check whether antivirus protection quarantined it.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
shsvcs.dll. - Open the detection details and note the path, detection name, and action taken.
Do not restore the file merely because an application requests it. Restore it only when the path and Microsoft signature are consistent with a legitimate Windows component and the detection is determined to be incorrect. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the device at risk.
If Protection history identifies malware, leave the item quarantined and run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
For suspected persistent malware, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same scan-options page. Save open work first because the computer restarts during an offline scan.
Fix 4: Investigate Shell Hardware Detection and device software
This step matters when the error appears during AutoPlay, scanner use, removable-drive detection, storage management, or hardware changes.
Identify the service
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Shell Hardware Detection.
- Double-click it.
- Note the service status and startup configuration. Do not change settings permanently just to hide the error.
If the service repeatedly stops or causes svchost.exe_ShellHWDetection crashes, update or repair software that interacts with the affected hardware. Check scanner software, backup tools, storage-provider utilities, disk-management software, and third-party security products.

Update hardware drivers through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing device, such as Disk drives, Storage controllers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, Imaging devices, or Portable Devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a driver.
If the fault began directly after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if that option is available.
- Restart and test again.
Also repair or update the associated vendor software. If removing a scanner, storage utility, backup program, or antivirus component makes the crash stop, obtain a compatible current version from that product’s official vendor or use an alternative supported configuration.
Manually comparing dozens of driver packages is tedious when the real conflict is unclear. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify what its free scan finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it as an optional convenience, not as a prerequisite for repairing Windows.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after an update or installation
System Restore is appropriate when shsvcs.dll worked previously and the failure began after a Windows update, driver installation, utility installation, or system configuration change.
System Restore changes system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. It can remove applications and drivers installed after the selected restore point.

- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
If Windows will not start normally, open Windows Recovery Environment:
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart, or use the recovery options available from the sign-in screen.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose the appropriate restore point and complete the wizard.
Test the application or hardware after Windows starts. If the error remains, undoing the restore is not a substitute for DISM and SFC. Continue with Windows repair.

If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, and System Restore is unavailable or ineffective, use a Windows repair reinstall.
On eligible Windows 11 systems:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the feature is available and used as designed.
If that option is not present, use official Windows recovery or installation media for an in-place repair. Back up important personal files first, confirm the edition and architecture match the installed system, and follow Microsoft’s recovery instructions. A clean installation is a last resort when Windows is compromised or unrecoverable, and it requires careful backup planning.

Why reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET usually fails
Those packages provide separate runtimes. shsvcs.dll is a Windows Shell Services file supplied as part of Windows, so reinstalling a game runtime does not normally restore it.
An application may still need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET for another error, but install those components only when the application’s own documentation or error message identifies that dependency. Do not treat them as a general repair for shsvcs.dll.
Does regsvr32 apply?
Normally, no.
regsvr32 registers COM or OLE DLLs that expose the required registration functions. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing every DLL, and shsvcs.dll is normally used as a Windows service DLL rather than as a desktop COM component that a user should manually register.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAvoid commands such as:
regsvr32 shsvcs.dll
They may produce an error without repairing the underlying Windows image, or create confusion about what was changed. Use DISM and SFC for a Windows system-file problem.
Do not download shsvcs.dll manually
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, an invalid signature, or a file with incompatible dependencies. Even a genuine-looking replacement may be overwritten by servicing or fail because the actual problem is a damaged component store, driver conflict, or malware.
The safe sources are:
- Windows Update.
- DISM and SFC.
- A matching official Windows repair source.
- Windows Recovery or official installation media.
- System Restore when an appropriate restore point exists.
If the error names a private copy inside a specific game or application directory, use that product’s repair, reinstall, or launcher file-verification feature. A copy under System32 belongs to Windows and should be repaired through Windows servicing.
Frequently asked questions
Is shsvcs.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. Its description is Windows Shell Services Dll, and it is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is shsvcs.dll a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Both architecture-specific copies can exist. On 64-bit Windows, the native copy is normally in System32, while the 32-bit counterpart is normally in SysWOW64. Do not exchange the files manually.
Is a missing shsvcs.dll error caused by my game?
Not necessarily. A game or application may be the first program to display the error, but the named file belongs to Windows. Repair Windows first unless the error specifically points to a private DLL inside the application’s own directory.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It can indicate corruption, an incompatible architecture, damaged dependencies, or tampering. It does not prove that replacing the named file alone will solve the problem.
What if antivirus removed the file?
Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Confirm the path and Microsoft signature before considering restoration, and scan the system if the detection may be genuine.
What if SFC cannot repair shsvcs.dll?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If repair still fails, inspect the CBS log if you are technically qualified, then consider Windows Update repair reinstall, System Restore, or an in-place repair using matching installation media.
Should I check old version and size lists?
Only as general historical context. Windows servicing updates replace binaries, and versions differ by release, architecture, and update. A valid Microsoft signature and expected path are more useful than matching an old byte count.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Use reinstallation only after Windows Update, DISM, SFC, driver or vendor-software repair, and appropriate recovery options fail, or when malware has left Windows untrustworthy. Back up personal data before using any reset or clean-install option.
