“ The program can’t start because ufcbuf.dll is missing from your computer.” If Windows reports that ufcbuf.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is missing, ufcbuf.dll is usually a missing file from an old Ulead application, not a Windows system file.

- An old Ulead program will not open: Repair or reinstall that exact application first.
- The problem started after antivirus activity: Check Windows Security Protection History before downloading anything.
- You copied the program from another PC: Install the complete application instead of copying a single DLL.
- The error names another file such as
msvcp*.dll,msvcr*.dll, orvcruntime*.dll: Investigate the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime separately. ufcbuf.dllexists, but the application still fails: Reinstall the whole program because another dependency may be missing.- Several Windows programs are failing: Run DISM and System File Checker as broader Windows maintenance.
- The program is very old and worked before a Windows change: Try compatibility settings after restoring the original installation.
Do not begin by copying ufcbuf.dll into System32 or `SysWOW64. That usually treats the wrong problem and can create version or security issues.
What ufcbuf.dll belongs to
ufcbuf.dll is reported as “UFCBUF DLL,” a legacy application component associated most strongly with Ulead VideoStudio. Ulead Systems, Inc. is identified as its developer in public file records.

- 3. READY-TO-USE BOOTABLE USB Reusable installation and recovery media that helps eliminate the need to download large system files or create bootable media yourself. Insert the USB drive, open the computer’s boot menu and select the appropriate installation or recovery option.
- 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
Historical installation listings also show the same filename in other Ulead products, including Ulead GIF Animator and Ulead PhotoImpact. Therefore, VideoStudio is the strongest lead, but it is not safe to assume that every computer using ufcbuf.dll has the same Ulead product installed.
The file is not a normal Windows component. It is generally expected in the folder belonging to the Ulead application that loads it. It has also been reported as a 32-bit component, which fits the age of these applications. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit program, but the program still needs its own compatible application files.
Reported error variants include:
- “This application failed to start because ufcbuf.dll was not found.”
- “The file ufcbuf.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: ufcbuf.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading ufcbuf.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Cannot find ufcbuf.dll.”
- “ufcbuf.dll Access Violation.”
- “Cannot register ufcbuf.dll.”
These are commonly reported variants rather than a standardized Microsoft error message.
Identify the program that needs the file
Before repairing anything, identify the application and the path Windows is using.

Read the full error dialog
The failing executable is often named in the title bar or message. Look for names such as:
vstudio.exeor another VideoStudio executable- A Ulead PhotoImpact executable
- A Ulead GIF Animator executable
- A shortcut or launcher connected to an old Ulead installation
If the dialog appears immediately after opening a shortcut, right-click that shortcut, select Properties, and inspect the Target field. The target path often reveals the product folder.
Search the installed program folders
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, enter
ufcbuf.dll. - Allow the search to finish.
- Record the folder containing the file, if one exists.
A result inside an old Ulead or VideoStudio folder is useful evidence. A result in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 should not automatically be trusted. The filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine or belongs there.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Ulead, VideoStudio, PhotoImpact, or GIF Animator.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Apps & features.
- Search for the same product names.
You can also open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. Write down the exact product name before starting a repair.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the original Ulead application
This is the most likely and safest fix because ufcbuf.dll is an application-private file.
If the installer offers Repair
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the affected Ulead application.
- Choose Uninstall/Change, Change, or Repair, depending on what the installer displays.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application from its normal shortcut.
If the program opens without the DLL message, the repair restored the missing component.
If repair is unavailable
Use the original installation disc, backed-up installer, or a verified installer supplied through the product vendor’s official support channel.
- Save any project files and custom templates.
- Close all Ulead processes.
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the affected Ulead product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Run the complete installer as an administrator. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install the application to its normal location unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the program.
Do not uninstall a different Ulead product merely because it contains a similarly named file. Reinstall the product that actually fails.

An old application may also have compatibility problems on modern Windows, but compatibility settings cannot recreate a missing DLL.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine or delete an old application file. That does not prove the file was malicious, and it does not prove it was safe. Check the detection and its original path.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any item that names the Ulead program folder or
ufcbuf.dll. - Review the detection details and original file path.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the genuine Ulead installation media or a verified installer.
- The path belongs to the affected application.
- You understand the security detection.
- You have confirmed that the installer or application was not tampered with.
If the source is uncertain, do not restore the quarantined file. Reinstall the complete application from trusted media instead. Protection History does not retain events indefinitely, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible.
After reinstalling, run a full security scan if the file was removed for a malware-related reason. Do not add broad exclusions for the Windows directory just to make the application start.
Fix 3: Reinstall the application instead of copying one DLL
A missing ufcbuf.dll can be only one symptom of an incomplete installation. The program may also need other private DLLs, configuration files, codecs, or registry entries.
This commonly happens after:
- Copying an old program folder to a new PC
- Restoring only part of a backup
- Disk corruption
- Cleaning up files manually
- Removing another Ulead product
- An interrupted uninstall or reinstall
The correct remedy is to restore the complete application. Copying ufcbuf.dll from another computer can introduce a mismatched build, incorrect dependencies, or malware. It also does not repair shortcuts, supporting files, permissions, or installation records.
If the original media is unavailable, contact the software vendor’s official support channel or recover the licensed installer from a verified backup. A random standalone DLL is not a dependable replacement.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Fix 4: Install Visual C++ Redistributable only for a matching runtime error
Do not install a Microsoft Visual C++ package simply because ufcbuf.dll is missing. Available evidence identifies ufcbuf.dll as a Ulead application DLL, not as a Microsoft runtime component.
Investigate Visual C++ only when the error also names a runtime such as:
msvcp*.dllmsvcr*.dllvcruntime*.dll
Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation explains which packages provide Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries and how architecture affects installation. A 32-bit Ulead application generally needs the x86 runtime when a runtime dependency is actually identified, even on 64-bit Windows.
After installing a required runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the Ulead application again.
- If the message still specifically names
ufcbuf.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall steps.
Installing a runtime package will not normally recreate an application-private Ulead DLL.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself is behaving abnormally, multiple applications report missing system files, or the failure began after wider system corruption. They are not the normal direct repair for ufcbuf.dll.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Ulead application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components; they normally do not recreate a missing DLL that belongs inside an old Ulead program folder.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows repair commands is taking longer than the underlying diagnosis, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems and show what needs attention before its full version performs repairs. It is optional, and reinstalling the Ulead application remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
Fix 6: Use System Restore when a recent change caused the failure
System Restore is appropriate when the application worked recently and the problem began after software removal, a system change, or an update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs but normally does not remove personal documents. It is not guaranteed to restore an application DLL, so reinstall the Ulead program if the error remains.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Check compatibility and user permissions
Legacy Ulead software may fail on current Windows even after its files are restored.
Try compatibility settings
- Locate the application’s main executable.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version that matches the era of the application.
- Select Apply → OK.
- Launch the program.
You can also select Run this program as an administrator for testing. If that changes the result, the problem may involve permissions, protected folders, or old installer behavior. Do not permanently grant broad privileges unless necessary.
Test another Windows account
If the application works under one account but not another:
- Open Settings → Accounts → Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create a local test account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch the Ulead application.
A damaged profile or incorrect permissions may be involved. This test does not replace reinstalling the application if the DLL is absent.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the symptoms point there
ufcbuf.dll is not established as a device driver. Device Manager is therefore not the first place to repair this particular error. Use it only when the Ulead application also fails because a scanner, capture device, graphics adapter, or other hardware is not detected.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If the device was recently updated and stopped working, open Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver, when available. For a complete replacement, use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package and match it to the device and Windows architecture.
Manually hunting through device entries and guessing which of many drivers is stale can be time-consuming; Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues, while driver installation or repair is handled by its full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the required Ulead application installation.
What not to do
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose storage for application DLLs. Copying an arbitrary file there can:
- Create conflicts with other software
- Hide which application owns the file
- Introduce malware
- Leave the original application incomplete
- Cause architecture or version mismatches
Keep the DLL in the application directory installed by the original program.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL installer
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide COM self-registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for repairing missing application files.
There is no reliable evidence that ufcbuf.dll is a self-registering COM server. Running:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →regsvr32 ufcbuf.dll
is therefore unlikely to fix a missing-file launch error. It may produce an entry-point or registration error. Use regsvr32 only if the software vendor specifically documents that this particular DLL must be registered.
Do not use random DLL download sites
Unofficial DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, a different build, or a modified file. Even a clean-looking replacement may not match the application’s other files and may leave the actual installation problem unresolved.
Use the original installation disc, a verified backup, or an official vendor download or support channel. Do not trust a file solely because its name matches.
If the error says “specified module could not be found”
This wording can mean that Windows found ufcbuf.dll but could not load one of its dependencies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do the following:
- Confirm that the file is inside the correct Ulead application folder.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Repair or reinstall the complete application.
- Note whether the error names another missing DLL.
- Install a Microsoft runtime only if the error identifies one.
- Avoid downloading dependencies individually.
Reinstalling the full application is safer than trying to reconstruct its dependency chain one file at a time.
Prevention after the repair
- Keep the original installer or installation media with the application’s license information.
- Back up the complete program installer and your project files separately.
- Do not delete DLLs manually from old application folders.
- Check antivirus quarantine before restoring any removed file.
- Use the application’s own uninstall process.
- Keep a record of the exact Ulead product installed on each older workstation.
- When migrating to another PC, install the complete program instead of copying its folder.
- Keep Windows and security software maintained, while recognizing that Windows Update is not expected to supply
ufcbuf.dll.
FAQ
Is ufcbuf.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with legacy Ulead software and is not normally a Windows system component.
Which program usually needs ufcbuf.dll?
Ulead VideoStudio is the strongest public association. Historical records also connect the filename with other Ulead applications, so identify the failing executable rather than assuming the product.
Should I download ufcbuf.dll from the internet?
No. Use the original application installer, verified backup, or official vendor support channel. Random DLL files may be unsafe or incompatible.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only when the error also identifies a Microsoft C or C++ runtime such as msvcp, msvcr, or vcruntime. It is not the primary repair for ufcbuf.dll.
Should I run regsvr32 ufcbuf.dll?
Normally no. regsvr32 applies to self-registering COM DLLs, and ufcbuf.dll has not been reliably established as one.
Why does the error remain when the file is present?
Another dependency may be missing, the file may be damaged or mismatched, antivirus may remove it again, or the old application may be incompatible with the current Windows environment. Reinstall the complete application and check Protection History.
What if I have no installer?
Look for the original licensed media or a verified backup, then contact the software vendor’s official support channel. If none exists, replacing the obsolete application may be safer than using an unverified DLL.
