sig.dll is not an established Windows component, and sig.dll is not identified as a standard Visual C++, .NET, or DirectX runtime file. The filename alone does not reveal which application needs it.
The safest fix is to identify the program named in the error or the folder containing the file, then repair, verify, update, or reinstall that application using its official installer. Do not download an anonymous copy of sig.dll and place it in System32.

Public DLL-index pages list unattributed metadata for a file with this name, but those listings do not establish a publisher, product owner, authenticity, compatibility, or safety. A historical programming reference also shows that developers have used Sig.dll as a private application library. That means different programs could use the same filename.
Fix 1: Identify the application that needs sig.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Start with the exact error. Common messages include:
#1 Best Overall

- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
- “The program can’t start because sig.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because sig.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting sig.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “sig.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording is useful, but the application name and file path are more important.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and the text around the message. It may identify the game, launcher, installer, or executable that failed.
If the error appears after clicking a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target path.
- Note the executable name and its containing folder.
That folder is usually the first place to investigate. An application-local DLL normally belongs beside the program that loads it, not automatically in C:WindowsSystem32.
Find the program from Task Manager
If the error appears briefly and disappears:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Processes or Details.
- Start the affected application again.
- Watch for the process name.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
Record the full path. Also note whether the program is installed under Program Files, Program Files (x86), a game library, or an unexpected shared or temporary folder.
Search for the file without downloading it
To search your own drive:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, enter
sig.dll. - Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click each result and select Open file location.
Do not assume that the first result is legitimate. Check which executable is nearby, whether the location belongs to known software, and whether Windows Security reported the file.
If the error occurs during Windows startup rather than when opening a known program:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Startup.
- Look for an unfamiliar entry.
- Also check Task Manager > Startup apps.
- Record the path if the entry has one.
An orphaned startup reference may remain after an incomplete uninstall. An unexpected path or unsigned file deserves a malware check before any restoration attempt.
Fix 2: Repair the owning application
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Once you know which application is failing, use its built-in repair option first.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Windows repairs the installation without normally removing its personal data. If Repair is unavailable or does not work, use Reset only when you understand that it may remove the application’s settings or local data.
Repair a traditional desktop program
Some desktop installers use Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Look for Repair, Change, or a similar installer option.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Verify files through the application launcher
For a game or launcher-managed application, open its launcher and look for commands named:
- Verify
- Verify integrity
- Repair
- Scan and repair
- Check files
Run that operation while the launcher is connected to the account that owns the application. It should replace damaged or missing files from the publisher’s service.
If the application still reports the error, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or the official store where you obtained it. Reinstalling the program that installed sig.dll is the definitive repair when that file belongs to the program.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
An antivirus product may quarantine a DLL after detecting it, or an incomplete cleanup may have removed it. Do not assume that quarantine means a false positive.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries that mention the affected application,
sig.dll, or the folder containing it.
Check the detection name, original path, and action taken. If the file was found in a suspicious shared or system-like directory, do not restore it merely because the filename matches.
Microsoft advises allowing or restoring a quarantined file only when you trust the software and its publisher. The safer sequence is:
- Remove or leave the suspicious file quarantined.
- Run a scan.
- Download the application again from its official source.
- Reinstall it.
- Check whether the newly installed file has a known publisher and valid digital signature.
A threat database has associated a similarly named sig.dll entry with malware use, but that does not prove that every file named sig.dll is malicious. Treat the location, signature, detection, and owning application as the evidence.
Fix 4: Check the file’s publisher and architecture
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A file can be present but still fail because it is damaged, incompatible, or the wrong architecture.
To inspect it:
- Right-click
sig.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Check whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Note the signer and certification path.
An unsigned file is not automatically malware, because some private application libraries are unsigned. However, an unexpected unsigned file in a startup or shared directory should not be restored blindly.
Architecture also matters:
- A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit build.
- A 64-bit application needs the appropriate 64-bit build.
- The filename alone cannot establish which build is correct.
Do not use a rule that every 32-bit DLL belongs in System32 or every 64-bit DLL belongs in SysWOW64. Windows directory naming is counterintuitive, and the owning installer should determine placement.
Fix 5: Reinstall a required Microsoft runtime only when evidence points there
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
There is no evidence that sig.dll is one of Microsoft’s documented Visual C++ runtime files. Installing a runtime package is therefore not the default fix.
Consider this step only when the application’s documentation or installer reports a missing runtime, or when the program displays a separate Microsoft runtime error.

Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ packages are named VC_redist.x86.exe, VC_redist.x64.exe, and VC_redist.arm64.exe. On 64-bit Windows, applications may use either 32-bit or 64-bit components, so both x86 and x64 packages can be relevant when the application specifically requires them.
After installing the required package:
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application.
- If
sig.dllremains the named error, return to repairing or reinstalling the owning application.
Do not expect a newer Visual C++ package to replace an arbitrary application DLL.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall related drivers when the application depends on hardware
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Use this step when the error began after a graphics, audio, printer, storage, or other hardware change, or when the application’s vendor identifies a driver dependency.
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows after installation.
You can also select Uninstall device, restart, and allow Windows to reinstall the device when the vendor’s instructions specifically recommend it. For graphics and specialized hardware, obtain the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer rather than copying a DLL.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention, while the repair or driver installation is completed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns sig.dll remains the definitive fix when the problem is application-specific.
Fix 7: Run Windows component repair commands when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use SFC and DISM when Windows has broader symptoms, such as damaged protected files, failed updates, or multiple built-in components malfunctioning. There is no evidence that sig.dll is a protected Windows file, so these commands will not normally restore an arbitrary third-party application DLL.
Run DISM first, then SFC:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the permission prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If both commands complete without fixing the error, repair or reinstall the owning application instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRepeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while repair actions are completed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the program that owns sig.dll.
Fix 8: Do not register sig.dll with regsvr32 unless the vendor requires it
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A normal private runtime or application library may not provide that function.
The command format is:
regsvr32 <Dllname>
Running this for an arbitrary sig.dll can produce:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not mean the DLL is missing. It means registration is not the correct operation for that file. Use regsvr32 sig.dll only when the original software vendor explicitly instructs you to do so and provides the correct file path.

Fix 9: Scan for malware if the path or behavior is suspicious
Time needed: 15 minutes to several hours
Run a scan when sig.dll is located in an unexpected directory, has no trusted publisher, creates a startup entry, or was detected by antivirus.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Start with Full scan.
- If the problem persists or malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
Do not disable antivirus protection to make an unknown DLL load. Do not add an exclusion for a file that you have not verified.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the application’s dependencies. Copying it into System32 can also create version conflicts and DLL search-order problems.
The safe sources are:
- The affected application’s official installer or launcher
- The official Microsoft installer for a Microsoft runtime that the application actually requires
- The hardware manufacturer’s official driver package
- The official Microsoft repair tools for Windows components

If the failure began after a known software or system change and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore may help. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the change. It rolls back system files and settings, but it can remove recently installed applications or updates.
Common questions
Is sig.dll part of Windows?
No authoritative Microsoft documentation establishes sig.dll as a Windows component. Treat it as an application file until the owning program proves otherwise.
Is sig.dll a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
There is no evidence linking this filename to Visual C++, .NET, DirectX, or another Microsoft redistributable. Install those components only when the application specifically requires them.
Which program needs sig.dll?
The filename alone is insufficient. Use the erroring executable, file location, installer records, antivirus history, and digital signature to identify the owner.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShould I copy sig.dll into System32?
No. Application-local DLLs normally belong with the application that loads them. Copying an unverified file into a Windows directory can cause security and compatibility problems.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when sig.dll exists?
That wording can indicate that a dependency of sig.dll is missing or incompatible. Repairing the application is safer than replacing unrelated DLLs individually.
What if the error appears during startup?
Inspect Startup apps, scheduled tasks, services, and the path shown in Event Viewer. If the entry points to an uninstalled or suspicious program, scan the system and remove the unwanted startup reference rather than downloading sig.dll.
