compiledcomposition.microsoft.powershell.gpowershell.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows PowerShell assembly, not a file you should replace with a random internet download. If compiledcomposition.microsoft.powershell.gpowershell.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows components first, then investigate PowerShell dependencies and the application reporting the error.
The known historical location is:
%SystemRoot%System32WindowsPowerShellv1.0
Microsoft documents Windows PowerShell 5.1 as a Windows component, while PowerShell 7 is a separate, side-by-side product. Installing PowerShell 7 does not automatically repair a damaged Windows PowerShell installation. Microsoft’s Windows PowerShell 5.1 documentation
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, plus a restart
This is the best first fix when PowerShell itself will not launch, the DLL is absent from the Windows PowerShell folder, or the problem appeared after an interrupted update, disk problem, cleanup utility, or servicing failure.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired store.

Run DISM
- Press Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC sequence for repairing Windows Update and component corruption. Microsoft’s Windows repair guidance
If SFC says it found and repaired corrupt files, reboot before testing PowerShell. If it says it could not repair some files, inspect:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Then repeat DISM and SFC, or continue to the repair-source step below.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows detected problems; repairs are performed by the full version, but Windows’ built-in repair commands remain the appropriate first step.
If DISM cannot find repair files
DISM may need a matching Windows installation source if Windows Update cannot supply the required component files.
Use installation media or a trusted Windows image that closely matches the installed Windows version and edition. Microsoft’s repair-source instructions explain how to use a matching source with DISM. Microsoft DISM repair-source guidance
Do not point DISM at an arbitrary ISO or another computer’s system folder. A mismatched source can leave servicing problems unresolved.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, excluding download time
Recommended Free Tools
An incomplete Windows servicing operation can leave a system component missing even when most of Windows still works.
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- If the DLL error remains, rerun DISM and SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
On Windows 10, Windows Update is under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Windows 11 uses Settings > Windows Update.
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, repair the component store before trying the update again. Avoid deleting servicing folders or using registry cleaners to force the update.
Fix 3: Confirm Windows PowerShell and the file location
Time needed: 5 minutes
A missing file in the expected directory is useful evidence, but it does not prove that manually copying a replacement is safe.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%SystemRoot%System32WindowsPowerShellv1.0
- Press Enter.
- Look for:
CompiledComposition.Microsoft.PowerShell.GPowerShell.dll
Windows is not case-sensitive for this filename, so capitalization may differ in Explorer.

You can also check from Command Prompt:
dir "%SystemRoot%System32WindowsPowerShellv1.0CompiledComposition.Microsoft.PowerShell.GPowerShell.dll"
If the file exists, do not assume it is healthy. An error stating “the specified module could not be found” can mean that the named DLL exists but one of its dependent assemblies cannot load.
Test Windows PowerShell itself:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows PowerShell. - Launch Windows PowerShell.
- Run:
$PSVersionTable.PSVersion
If PowerShell opens and returns version information, the Windows PowerShell host is functioning. The failing program may have its own broken PowerShell host, launch configuration, or dependency.
Windows PowerShell 5.1 is included with Windows client 10 and later and Windows Server 2016 and later. Historical Windows inventories also document this assembly under the Windows PowerShell directory, but the historical file size is not a reliable replacement-file specification. Fix 4: Check optional Windows features
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Windows PowerShell is a Windows component, and optional-feature state can matter on older installations.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- In Windows Features, look for Windows PowerShell 2.0 or related PowerShell entries.
- If an entry is enabled and the problem began after a feature change, clear it, select OK, restart, then return and enable it again if your software specifically requires it.
- Run DISM and SFC after changing the feature state.
Do not enable legacy PowerShell features simply because a DLL error mentions PowerShell. Windows PowerShell 2.0 is an older compatibility component and is not required by every PowerShell application.
Fix 5: Use WMF 5.1 only on supported legacy Windows
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes
Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2 may need the appropriate Windows Management Framework package when their Windows PowerShell installation is incomplete or outdated.
Windows Management Framework includes Windows PowerShell and related management components. Microsoft distributed WMF 5.1 through the Microsoft Download Center and Microsoft Update Catalog for those older Windows releases. Microsoft’s WMF 5.1 release information

- Press Enter and note the Windows release.
- Confirm whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit in Settings > System > About.
- Use only the WMF package intended for that Windows release and architecture.
- Follow its prerequisites and restart instructions.
- Run SFC after installation.
Do not use WMF 5.1 as the normal repair for Windows 10 or Windows 11. On those systems, repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first. PowerShell 7 is also not a substitute for repairing Windows PowerShell 5.1 when software explicitly depends on the Windows component.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes
Security software may quarantine a legitimate Windows file after a false detection or a damaged update.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the Windows PowerShell directory.
- Verify that the detected path is under the Windows directory and that the event is clearly associated with this assembly.
- Update security definitions.
- Run a full scan.
Restore a quarantined file only when the path, surrounding installation, and digital signature are legitimate. If the file is located in a temporary folder, a game directory, or an unfamiliar application folder, do not restore it automatically. Let antivirus complete its investigation, then repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32
Time needed: 1 minute
regsvr32 is generally not appropriate for this file. It is a Windows PowerShell and .NET-related system assembly, not an ordinary self-registering ActiveX or COM DLL.

Fix 8: Repair the application reporting the error
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
If Windows PowerShell launches normally but one game or application fails, the application may be carrying a broken PowerShell host or dependency.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- Otherwise uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
- Launch it again and check whether the error returns.
Do not place a replacement DLL in the application folder unless the application’s own official support instructions specifically require a private copy. If the error appears only in that application, reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for its private files.
Fix 9: Update drivers only when the error is part of a wider system problem
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A graphics or chipset driver is not the normal owner of this PowerShell assembly. Driver work is relevant only when the DLL error appeared alongside crashes, failed Windows updates, device errors, or broader system instability.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the wider problem, such as Display adapters or System devices.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which versions need attention; installation is performed by the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing Windows PowerShell or reinstalling the affected application.
Why this error happens
The most likely causes are:
| Cause | What it usually means | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Missing or corrupted Windows component | The file was damaged, deleted, or not restored during servicing | DISM, then SFC |
| Incomplete Windows Update | A component installation stopped partway through | Finish updates, restart, rerun DISM and SFC |
| Legacy Windows PowerShell issue | An older Windows release lacks the correct management framework | Use the matching Microsoft WMF package |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed or isolated the file | Verify the path, scan, and repair Windows |
| Dependency failure | The DLL exists, but another module cannot load | Check the complete error and application logs |
| Damaged application | Only one program fails while PowerShell works | Repair or reinstall that program |
Should you download this DLL?
No. A downloaded DLL can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, servicing state, signature, or dependencies. It may also contain malicious code, and copying it into System32 often hides the symptom without repairing the component store.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, a matching Windows installation source, or the official WMF package for supported legacy Windows versions.
When to use System Restore or repair installation
Use System Restore when a suitable restore point predates the failure:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Create a restore point. - Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review affected programs and complete the restore.
If repair commands fail and no restore point is usable, use Windows’ in-place repair options while keeping a backup of important files. A full Windows reinstall is the last resort, after backing up data and confirming that component repair and application repair cannot recover the installation.
FAQ
Is this file malware?
The file is a legitimate Microsoft Windows PowerShell assembly when it is in the expected Windows PowerShell directory. An identically named file elsewhere needs separate verification.
Is this a PowerShell 7 file?
No. PowerShell 7 is separate from Windows PowerShell 5.1. Installing PowerShell 7 is not a guaranteed fix for software that depends on Windows PowerShell.
Does the file belong in System32?
The documented historical location is under:
%SystemRoot%System32WindowsPowerShellv1.0
Do not infer that a separate SysWOW64 copy is required for this particular assembly.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhat if SFC and DISM report no problems?
If Windows PowerShell launches, repair or reinstall the application reporting the error. Also inspect Event Viewer, Reliability Monitor, and the application’s complete error details because “specified module could not be found” may identify a missing dependency rather than this DLL.
Is the historical file size a way to verify a replacement?
No. A historical inventory reports a size, but Windows builds and servicing states can differ. Do not select or replace a DLL by size alone.
