Sigil Stones are found at the top of the largest tower inside an Oblivion Gate’s Sigilium Sanguis. Taking the stone closes that gate, and the stone can be used once to enchant a piece of jewelry, armor, or a weapon. The location and mechanics below are documented for the original Oblivion; the available sources do not confirm that every detail is unchanged in Oblivion Remastered.
Where to find Sigil Stones
Inside an Oblivion Gate, enter the Sigilium Sanguis and reach the top of its largest tower. The Sigil Stone is the central object there, not a merchant item or a random loot drop. The Elder Scrolls Wiki’s original-game reference says removing it closes the supported gate and transports non-Daedric beings back to Cyrodiil beside the destroyed gate: Sigil Stone (Oblivion).
Taking the stone therefore completes that gate. If you have a reason to remain inside, wait to take it until you are ready to leave.
What a Sigil Stone does
A Sigil Stone provides one enchantment for an eligible item. Jewelry and armor receive a constant effect, which remains active while the item is equipped. A weapon receives an offensive effect that uses charges. The original-game reference describes effects such as attribute absorption or fortification, elemental damage or resistance, Shield, Spell Absorption, Chameleon, Soul Trap, and Detect Life: Sigil Stone (Oblivion).

The stone is consumed when the enchantment is completed, so choose the item and effect with care. Bethesda’s original Oblivion manual gives the basic instruction: “To use Sigil Stones, select them in your Inventory Menu.” The manual covers the original game, not Remastered: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Manual.
Sigil Stone levels and tiers
The original-game reference lists the tier available according to the player’s level when the stone is obtained. It identifies Transcendent as the highest ordinary tier: Sigil Stone (Oblivion).

These thresholds and the associated effect scaling are original Oblivion reference data, not independently confirmed Remastered values. The same source treats the Great Sigil Stone separately: it is associated with the main quest and is not used for ordinary enchanting.

Both methods enchant equipment, but they differ in where they are found and how much control they offer. StrategyWiki’s enchanting guide describes Sigil Stones as gate finds and Soul Gem enchanting as a process using filled gems at an enchanting altar: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion/Enchanting. The Elder Scrolls Wiki says any character can use a Sigil Stone on inventory equipment, while Soul Gem altar access depends on Mages Guild rank and location; Soul Gems also allow more weapon-effect customization, including multiple effects or a radius.
