The Silent Hill 2 remake is already out, but readers following the series’ connected story have a good reason to look next to Silent Hill 3. The distinction is narrative, not a verdict on which game is better: Silent Hill 2 centers on James Sunderland’s personal story, while Silent Hill 3 follows Heather Mason and connects to the original Silent Hill.
Why Silent Hill 3 is more relevant to the series’ story
“More relevant” depends on what a player wants from the series. If the immediate question is what the new Silent Hill 2 release is about, James Sunderland’s story is the answer. If the question is which game carries forward a plot thread tied to the original Silent Hill, Silent Hill 3 has the stronger claim.

Konami’s official Silent Hill 2 remake announcement describes James returning to the town after receiving a letter from his deceased wife, Mary. By contrast, Konami’s Silent Hill 3 product page identifies Heather Mason as its protagonist and frames the story around her survival and the connection between her past and her fears. A MeriStation series-order guide recommends playing Silent Hill 3 after the first game because of plot connections, while noting that it can still be enjoyed on its own.
That makes Silent Hill 3 the more relevant game for a particular purpose: tracing the original game’s story into a later installment. It does not establish that Silent Hill 3 is objectively more important, more popular, or better than Silent Hill 2.

The games can therefore matter in different ways. Silent Hill 2 is the direct choice for James’s story and for players interested in the modern remake. Silent Hill 3 is the more useful next step for players following the original game’s narrative thread.
What changed in the Silent Hill 2 remake?
The remake updates how the story is played and presented while its developer says the central characters and emotional arcs remain intact. In a May 30, 2024 PlayStation.Blog interview, Bloober Team creative director Mateusz Lenart said: “The central characters from the original story, James and Maria, are at the heart of our remake as well. Their emotional arcs have been preserved, with great care being given to showcasing their emotions with motion capture technology.” That describes the developers’ intent; it is not an independent assessment of how successfully the changes work.

Konami describes expanded areas to explore, revamped combat and added cut-scenes. The remake also uses an over-the-shoulder camera, a new voice cast, expanded combat options and altered puzzle designs. These changes affect the experience without changing the basic reason James returns to town.
Release status and platforms
Silent Hill 2 remake launched on October 8, 2024, for PS5 and PC via Steam, as announced by Konami. Konami’s current support page lists PS5, PC Steam and Xbox Series X|S. The original Silent Hill 3 page lists its PS2 release date, but the cited page does not establish its current platform availability.

Konami announced on January 29, 2025, that the remake had sold 2 million combined physical and digital units. That is a dated sales milestone, not a current lifetime total. In its 2026 group report, Konami said Silent Hill f launched in September 2025 and described it as the first new series installment in twelve years. The report also lists a remake of the first Silent Hill and Silent Hill: Townfall among projects in development; it does not settle whether Konami has separately announced a Silent Hill 3 remake.

If you’re asking “Silent Hill, in what order should you play the series?”—the question MeriStation’s Spanish-language guide poses—the most useful answer for understanding Silent Hill 3 is to play the original Silent Hill first. The guide recommends that order because of plot connections, but also says Silent Hill 3 can be enjoyed independently. Players primarily interested in the remake’s standalone James-and-Mary story can begin with Silent Hill 2 instead.
