To open the Shrine Vault in Silent Hill f, use the poem for your selected riddle difficulty to find three matching ema plaques, flip each one, and enter the revealed symbols in the poem’s order. Check your journal for symbols you have discovered. The clue and its interpretation change by difficulty, so use the version shown in your game rather than a code from a guide for another setting.
How the Shrine Vault puzzle works
The Shrine Vault puzzle appears early in the Shrine Path sequence and blocks progress. It asks you to interpret a poem, identify three wooden plaques called ema by their imagery, and flip them to reveal symbols on their backs. You then use those symbols to unlock the vault.
- Read the poem beside the vault and note the riddle difficulty you selected: Story, Hard, or Lost in the Fog.
- Search the Shrine Path for the three ema whose pictures match the poem’s clues.
- Interact with each matching ema to flip it and reveal its symbol.
- Consult the journal if you need to review symbols you have already found.
- Enter the symbols in the sequence indicated by your poem, then try the lock.
Use the solution for your riddle difficulty
The poem changes with the selected riddle difficulty. That means the imagery, the plaques to find, and—in Lost in the Fog—the way you interpret the clue can differ. Follow the poem in your own game instead of applying a fixed sequence copied from a different difficulty.
Story and Hard
For Story and Hard, identify the ema that match the poem’s references, flip them, and enter their symbols in the order the poem gives. Published walkthroughs disagree about the fixed symbol sequences for these settings: PC Gamer lists Story as serpent, turtle, crane and Hard as tree, kudzu, lightning, while Gameranx gives the corresponding sequences as crane, serpent, tortoise and lightning, decayed tree, kudzu. The available guides do not establish why they differ. Treat those lists as unverified against your particular playthrough; use your in-game poem and journal as the authority.
#1 Best Overall
Lost in the Fog
In Lost in the Fog, the poem describes body parts removed from three yokai. The clue uses those counts to select a symbol position on each relevant ema. Find the plaques matching the yokai imagery, count the indicated removed parts, then use each count to identify which symbol on that plaque applies. One published walkthrough describes counts of two, four, and three for its version of the clue; rely on the wording and plaques in your own game if the details do not match.

If the vault will not open
- Check the difficulty: Make sure you are following the poem for your selected riddle setting, not a guide’s version for another setting.
- Recheck the plaque imagery: Confirm that each ema matches a clue before using its symbol.
- Review the symbol order: The correct symbols entered in the wrong sequence will not solve the lock. Follow the poem’s ordering and use the journal to check what you found.
- Revisit the Lost in the Fog count: Match the clue’s body-part count to the symbol’s position on the plaque rather than treating the count as a symbol itself.
