According to PC Gamer’s account of a Bloomberg interview with Jason Schreier, Pellen said the team might not go because they were “pretty busy.” That is a possibility, not a confirmation that Team Cherry would be absent. The report does not say that the developers had made a final decision.

The story’s “no point going” framing should not be read as a literal statement by Pellen or Gibson. The remarks, as reported, concerned the team’s schedule and Gibson’s expectations about who would win.
Why Gibson expected Expedition 33 to win
Gibson was reported as saying: “This year I think we’re safe. I think Expedition 33—it’s exceptional and broadly palatable.” He also expected Team Cherry would not need to record an acceptance speech, because he thought Expedition 33 would take the award.
