Who is Loam?
Loam is an Underworker who spends his time running on a treadmill connected to the Underworks machinery. He believes his labor supports the Citadel and that the inhabitants above will eventually reward him by allowing him to ascend.

He also believes that its inhabitants are constantly watching the workers below. When Hornet first speaks to him, he mistakes her for someone from the Citadel who has come to take him upward. After she corrects him, he apologizes for his “unworthy hope” and resumes working harder.

Loam’s location in the Underworks
Loam is in a concealed room in the middle section of the Underworks. The room is accessed from above, through a breakable ceiling section in the chamber containing a large spiked block that moves in an L-shaped route.
How to reach Loam
- Enter the Underworks and reach the room with the large moving spiked block.
- Go to the upper-left part of the room.
- Look near the ceiling for a small vent or opening.
- Strike the breakable ceiling section to the left of the vent.
- Enter the passage that opens.
- Follow the passage to the hidden room containing Loam and a second treadmill.
There is no visible NPC marker guiding you to the room. If you pass through the spiked-block chamber without checking its upper-left ceiling, the entrance is easy to miss. See the [Loam location reference] and [route overview] for additional map context.

Exhaust Loam’s dialogue
Speak with Loam several times to hear his thoughts about the Citadel, its supposed attention, his expected reward, and his refusal to rest. He also talks about the Citadel’s water and air.

After Hornet fills the nearby treadmill’s gauge for the first time, Loam gains additional dialogue celebrating the fact that they are working together.
Play the Needolin
Use the Needolin near living Loam to trigger a separate response about his childhood and home. The music reminds him of a time before his current labor, making it harder for him to continue. He asks Hornet not to play it again.
This interaction does not free Loam, stop the machinery, start a quest, or change his fate. If you want to hear the living version of this dialogue, visit him during Act 2.
Use the second treadmill
Hornet can run on the treadmill to Loam’s right. A gauge in the background fills while she runs. When the gauge completes, the machine can release one Rosary before resetting.

The treadmill follows these rules:
- The first completed gauge fill after entering the room guarantees one Rosary.
- Later completed fills can produce one Rosary or only a dust cloud.
- The chance of dust increases after successive Rosary drops and resets when dust appears.
- Rosaries can drop only during the first 50 gauge fills in that room visit. After that, the treadmill produces dust only.
- Leaving and re-entering the room resets these visit-based treadmill rules.
This makes the treadmill a small optional Rosary source, not an efficient farming method. The reward is one Rosary, not a Rosary String.
Treadmill troubleshooting
The Rosary did not pull toward Hornet
If Hornet has the Magnetite Brooch equipped, Rosaries released by this treadmill are not pulled to her. Check the floor and area around the treadmill manually.
The machine produced dust
Dust is not necessarily a bug. The treadmill can produce dust instead of a Rosary after successive fills, and it produces only dust after the first 50 gauge fills in the current visit. Leaving and re-entering the room resets the visit’s reward rules.

What happens to Loam in Act 3?
In Act 3, Loam can be found at the same treadmill location, crushed beneath fallen debris. A walkthrough reports this Act 2-to-Act 3 transition when Hornet has interacted with Loam in Act 2; there is no documented method to prevent the change.
Use the Needolin at his corpse to receive the concluding response:
“…Toil… …Run… …No more… …Free…”

If you find the room only after reaching Act 3, Loam’s living dialogue and treadmill encounter have been replaced by this aftermath. The Act 3 Needolin response remains available.

Can Loam be saved?
No verified in-game method saves Loam, recruits him, relocates him, or prevents his Act 3 state. Claims about rescuing him by emptying Citadel machines, jamming the Underworks machinery, or finding him elsewhere are unsupported fan claims or jokes rather than documented mechanics.
For the complete encounter, speak with Loam, play the Needolin, and use the treadmill before progressing into Act 3. If you reach Act 3 first, you can still visit the room and use the Needolin at his remains.
Current-version note
The latest public Steam patch listed in the supplied announcement archive is version 1.0.30000. Its notes include a fix for incomplete Underworks Needolin text, described as “Choruses in Underworks not playing their full Needolin text.” The listed notes do not report changes to Loam’s location, treadmill rules, or Act 3 fate. Check the official Silksong Steam announcements for patch information.
You do not need a command, console option, menu setting, or special ability to find Loam. The encounter is reached through normal exploration and the breakable ceiling passage.
