Silver Pines is a 2.5D survival-horror metroidvania: it pairs scarce supplies, monsters and puzzles with a connected map of locked doors and routes opened by new tools. That makes Silent Hill and Resident Evil useful reference points for its horror and resource-management traditions, not proof that it reproduces either series or that both were named as direct inspirations.
What kind of game is Silver Pines?
You play Red Walker, a private investigator who comes to the half-abandoned American town of Silver Pines to find missing musician Eddie Velvet. The investigation leads into the town’s dark past and an increasingly surreal, nightmarish mystery. The official game site foregrounds dread, atmosphere and the case; Steam classifies the game as a survival-horror metroidvania.

Its central loop brings together combat or evasion, puzzles, scarce resources and exploration. Locked doors and hidden paths make the town a place to revisit rather than simply move through once; finding tools and weapons can open routes that were inaccessible earlier. Team17 describes that structure in its announcement.
How it compares with Silent Hill and Resident Evil
The comparison is most useful when it points to particular design traits. The official Steam and Team17 descriptions call Silver Pines a “love letter to classic survival horror,” while reviewers have invoked the recognizable conventions associated with the two franchises. The official material consulted does not establish both Silent Hill and Resident Evil as developer-confirmed direct inspirations. Both franchises also vary considerably from entry to entry, so treat the comparison as shorthand for selected genre elements.

- Classic Craft-Based Survival Horror - Scavenge every corner of Rutherford Ranch to stay alive. From haunted forests, a derelict town, to infested bunkers. Explore a world teeming with danger as you gather vital resources, craft essential gear, upgrade your campsite, and rebuild outposts to have somewhere to hide.
- Day Prepares You. Night Hunts You - A dynamic day-night cycle that changes the world. Use daylight wisely to explore, scavenge supplies, craft what you need, and prepare for what’s coming. When night falls, the real nightmares come out to play. More enemies appear, stronger and more aggressive than before. The landscape becomes harder to navigate with just your flashlight. Sometimes your best hope is to find shelter and hunker down till morning.
- Deadly Silence Goes A Long Way - Stealth and combat go hand-in-hand here as many of the twisted creatures in Rutherford Ranch hunt and stalk you by sound alone. Brute force will often just land you in an early grave. Use sound to your advantage, luring creatures away from your path or cleverly leading them straight into deadly traps you laid.
- 80’s Vibes Meets Comic Book Flair - Inspired by the award-nominated comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin, I Hate This Place comes to life with bold colors, a punchy retro comic book style, and a heavy dose of '80s flair. A unique blend of horror, dark humor, and just the right touch of camp and gore where unsettling dread meets stylized charm.
- Languages – English in-game voice. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Simplified Chinese, and Spanish (Spain) in-game text.
| What to compare | What Silver Pines offers | What that means for expectations |
|---|---|---|
| Perspective and map | Steam lists it as 2.5D and a side scroller; its routes connect through locked doors and tool-gated paths. | Expect side-on exploration and backtracking rather than assuming the camera or map structure of a particular Silent Hill or Resident Evil entry. |
| Resources and inventory | Ammunition, medicine and carrying space matter, according to the official feature description and GamesRadar’s review. | Managing what to carry and when to spend supplies is part of the tension, not just a between-fights menu task. |
| Combat | The official description allows fighting or avoiding threats. PC Gamer’s first-hour preview describes early melee as weak and close-range combat as risky. | Expect resource-conscious encounters, but do not treat that first-hour preview as a verdict on combat throughout the full game. |
| Mystery and mood | The premise follows a detective into a decaying, surreal town. GamesRadar praised the painterly visuals and ambient music, while criticizing unresolved story questions in the endings it encountered. | The atmosphere may be a stronger draw than expecting every mystery to receive a firm explanation; that assessment is one reviewer’s judgment. |
| Puzzles and traversal | Puzzles, locked doors, hidden paths and routes opened by better tools are part of the official descriptions. | Progress depends on investigating spaces and returning when you have what you need, joining survival-horror problem-solving to metroidvania progression. |
What playing it is likely to feel like
Exploring and backtracking
GamesRadar describes a detailed map where items unlock routes and encourage revisiting earlier areas. The result is a survival-horror investigation with a metroidvania rhythm: a blocked door is not necessarily a dead end, and remembering where you saw it can matter when your equipment changes.
Managing supplies and space
Steam says every bullet, medicine bottle and upgrade matters. GamesRadar reports frequent inventory organization, item combination and use of storage boxes, with choices between larger multipurpose tools and smaller items. These decisions can shape how prepared you are for the next stretch, rather than merely adding housekeeping between encounters.

Fighting, avoiding and solving
The official description presents fighting and evasion as options, alongside puzzles. PC Gamer’s June 1, 2026 preview covers only the first hour: it reports an initially weak melee weapon, dangerous close-range encounters, scarce healing herbs and firearms appearing later. Those are early-game observations, not a complete account of the full game’s weapon balance or difficulty.
Following clues
GamesRadar reports that Walker can use a camera to record points of interest and clues, and that pay phones combine saving with story updates. These are reviewer-observed mechanics, rather than details established in the brief official feature list.

Release, platforms and PC requirements
As of October 7, 2026, Steam lists October 8, 2026, as the release date, names Wych Elm as developer and Team17 as publisher, and offers a downloadable demo. Its digital Deluxe Edition listing includes the game, an artbook and soundtrack. Steam showed no user reviews when checked that day, so there was not yet a Steam user-review record to use as a guide.
Platform listings differ in specificity and timing. Team17’s October 23, 2025 announcement named Steam, Epic Games Store, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PS5. GamesRadar’s review fast facts list PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. Check the current regional storefront for the exact console, edition and availability rather than assuming every platform in those lists has the same status.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Who should keep it on their list?
- Consider it if you like survival horror where supplies and carrying choices matter, and you enjoy mapping connected spaces and returning with newly acquired tools.
- Set expectations carefully if you want a specific franchise’s camera, combat style or narrative approach. Silver Pines has its own side-scrolling, metroidvania structure, and the comparisons describe shared genre features rather than a one-to-one match.
- Try the demo if you want to judge its movement, inventory flow and atmosphere for yourself before buying; Steam lists a downloadable demo.
