Do not start by downloading a loose DLL and copying it into System32. That can introduce malware, install the wrong architecture, and leave the actual SiS driver or one of its dependencies missing.

What sisgl.dll is
The file is identified as “SiS Compatible Super VGA OpenGL ICD.” It belongs to Silicon Integrated Systems Corporation display software and provides an OpenGL Installable Client Driver, or ICD.
An OpenGL ICD is a vendor-specific graphics component that the Windows OpenGL runtime loads for a particular display adapter. In practical terms, sisgl.dll helps older SiS graphics hardware and applications use OpenGL acceleration. It is not:

It was commonly installed with older SiS Mirage, SiS 6xx or 7xx, Xabre, and related graphics chipsets. The original computer, laptop, or motherboard manufacturer may have customized the driver, so a package for a similarly named SiS adapter is not necessarily suitable.

Representative messages include “sisgl.dll is missing from your computer,” “sisgl.dll was not found,” “Failed to load sisgl.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.” The last message does not always mean the named file itself is absent. Windows may be reporting that a dependency required by sisgl.dll cannot be found.

That distinction matters: if only one old program reports the error, the program may be damaged or incompatible even after the driver is installed correctly.
Before changing anything, identify the failure
Check whether the SiS adapter is still installed
- Press Win + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the complete adapter name.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, version, and location.
- Open the Details tab.
- In the Property list, select Hardware Ids.
- Copy the displayed values into a text file.
If the adapter is listed as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the SiS driver is probably missing or inactive. If it has a yellow warning icon, open Properties and read the device status.
If no SiS adapter appears, select View → Show hidden devices in Device Manager. Also check whether the graphics hardware is disabled in firmware or whether the computer has been upgraded and no longer contains the original SiS adapter.
Check the file details if it exists
Use File Explorer to search the program’s installation folder and the Windows driver folders. Do not delete or replace anything yet.

- Right-click it.
- Select Properties.
- Open Details.
- Confirm that the description refers to the SiS OpenGL ICD.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present, and review the signer.
- Record the full path and file version.
A file in an unexpected download folder, temporary folder, or unrelated application directory deserves extra caution. Its name alone does not prove that it is an authentic driver component.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete SiS display driver
This is the most likely fix when the adapter is present but sisgl.dll is missing, the driver was removed, or a Windows reinstall left the system using a generic display driver.

Find the correct package
Use the exact computer or motherboard model, not only the name of the graphics chip.
- Read the model from the computer’s label, Settings → System → About, or the manufacturer’s system-information utility.
- Visit the computer, laptop, or motherboard manufacturer’s official support page.
- Search for the model and the original Windows release it used.
- Download the complete Display, Graphics, or VGA driver package.
- Prefer the package intended for the exact model and operating-system architecture.
- Save the installer locally before removing the current driver.
If the manufacturer no longer provides the package, search the Microsoft Update Catalog for the exact SiS model and operating system. A verified example is SiS Mirage 3 Graphics Driver, version 6.14.10.3930, for Windows XP and X86. That package is an example, not a universal solution for every SiS adapter or modern Windows installation.
Install it
- Disconnect from the internet temporarily if Windows keeps replacing the driver during setup.
- Close games and graphics applications.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the manufacturer’s installation screens.
- Choose the display-driver installation when components are offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Device Manager → Display adapters.
- Open the adapter’s Properties → Driver tab and confirm that the intended provider and driver are installed.
Start the affected program. If it opens without the sisgl.dll message, the driver installation restored the required component.
If the installer refuses to run, reports that the operating system is unsupported, or installs but leaves Microsoft Basic Display Adapter active, the driver may be too old for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not force a random package from another SiS chipset.
Manually searching for compatible hardware drivers can mean checking many model-specific packages and comparing old architecture requirements. - Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Then check the affected application. A 32-bit program may be installed under C:Program Files (x86) or may show its architecture in the publisher’s documentation. That folder is a clue, not absolute proof.
Important points:
- A 32-bit application needs the appropriate 32-bit OpenGL ICD path.
- A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications, but it still needs the correct 32-bit graphics components for those applications.
- A 64-bit DLL cannot replace a 32-bit DLL.
- A driver for one chipset cannot be substituted merely because the product name also contains “SiS.”
- A package designed for Windows XP may not load on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If the application is old and the computer has modern Windows, test the program’s compatibility settings:
- Right-click the program shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test the Windows version closest to the program’s original release.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the program again.
Compatibility mode cannot create a missing driver. It may help an old application start, but it cannot make an unsupported SiS display driver compatible with a modern kernel.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected program
If Windows recognizes the SiS adapter and the driver is installed, but only one application reports the error, repair that application next.

Use Windows app repair where available
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application and test it.
If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s settings or local data.
Use the program’s own repair function
Games and older graphics programs may provide a launcher command such as Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair. Run that function from the original publisher’s installer or launcher.
If no repair function exists:
- Back up the program’s saved games, projects, or configuration files.
- Uninstall the program from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from its original installer or the publisher’s official source.
- Install any official patch intended for that release.
- Test the program before adding unofficial DLL files.
A program reinstall is particularly important if sisgl.dll was stored inside the application directory rather than the display-driver directory. The driver and the program may each have their own components.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine an old driver component if it is damaged, unsigned, or considered suspicious. Do not restore it automatically.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
sisgl.dll, the graphics driver, or the affected program. - Review the detected path and action.
- If the file came from a trusted, original driver package, use the available restore or allow action.
- Reinstall the official driver package afterward if there is any doubt.
If the file came from a random DLL website, leave it quarantined and remove it. Restore only a file whose origin, package, and signature you trust.
If the file disappears again after a clean official installation, check Protection History, run a full security scan, and investigate whether the application is attempting to load an incompatible legacy driver.
Fix 5: Roll back a recent driver or Windows change
If the error began immediately after a driver update, Windows reinstall, cleanup utility, or security product action, reverse that change where possible.
Roll back the display driver
- Press Win + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the SiS adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Choose a reason and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
The button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver stored.
Use System Restore
- Press Win + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can reverse driver and software changes without normally removing personal files. It does not guarantee recovery of an unsupported driver, so reinstall the correct package afterward if needed.
Fix 6: Install available Windows driver updates
Windows may have a compatible driver available through its normal update channel.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Select a matching display driver, if one is listed.
- Select Download and install.
- Restart Windows.

Optional updates may not contain a driver for very old SiS hardware. If nothing is offered, that does not prove the hardware is defective. It may simply mean that Microsoft does not distribute a compatible package for the installed Windows version.

Fix 7: Repair broader Windows corruption
Use system repair commands only when Windows has other symptoms, such as failed updates, damaged built-in components, or repeated system-file errors. They normally will not recreate a third-party SiS driver file.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run this command separately:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling a missing SiS display-driver package.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is an old, incompatible graphics driver. Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 sisgl.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE and ActiveX components that expose the required registration entry point. A graphics ICD is loaded by the display and OpenGL driver system, not normally registered like an ActiveX control. Microsoft notes that many DLLs are not self-registerable in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

If regsvr32 reports that an entry point is missing, that is expected for many ordinary or driver DLLs. It does not prove that the file needs registration.
What not to do
Do not download a random replacement DLL
A loose download may be:
- The wrong SiS chipset version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Incompatible with the installed Windows release
- Modified or malicious
- Missing other driver files and dependencies
Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the application folder can also make later troubleshooting harder. Use the complete driver package from the computer or motherboard manufacturer, Microsoft Update Catalog, or the original software publisher.
Do not assume System32 is always correct
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications use redirected system locations and their own program directories. A file copied into System32 may not be the file the application actually loads. The correct location is determined by the driver installation and application architecture.

Do not use SFC to repair third-party files
SFC protects Windows system files. It is not a catalog of every vendor driver file and is not guaranteed to restore sisgl.dll.
Do not force an XP-era driver onto Windows 11
A legacy installer may appear to complete while leaving the adapter unusable, causing crashes or returning the same OpenGL error. If no compatible package exists, the practical choices are an older supported Windows environment, compatible hardware, or a replacement application.
When no compatible driver exists
You may have reached a compatibility limit rather than a missing-file problem if:
- The SiS adapter is identified correctly but every official package targets an older Windows release.
- Windows rejects the driver as unsupported.
- The application requires hardware-accelerated OpenGL that the current system cannot provide.
- The driver installs but the adapter remains Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.
- The error changes to an incompatible-driver or initialization failure.
In that situation, use the application in its originally supported Windows environment, run it on compatible older hardware, replace the graphics adapter if the computer supports one, or use newer software. Do not keep replacing DLLs when the underlying graphics driver cannot operate on the installed operating system.

Is sisgl.dll part of Windows?
