Sites like G2A are not all alike: some sell keys through publisher-approved retail channels, while marketplace listings may come from individual third-party sellers. Before you buy gaming keys, check whether the game’s publisher recognizes the store, whether the key works in your country and on your platform, and what the seller’s refund and support terms actually cover. The available evidence does not establish a current, verified top ten, so this guide focuses on how to choose rather than presenting an unverified ranking.
Are sites like G2A safe for buying game keys?
There is no single safety answer for every store, seller, game, or region. A key may be valid and activate as expected, but a listing on a marketplace is not automatically equivalent to buying from a publisher or an authorized retailer. The publisher’s policy and the individual seller’s terms matter.

For Ubisoft games and content, Ubisoft recommends buying directly from Ubisoft or from retailers with a digital distribution agreement. It warns that keys from a retailer without such an agreement may be invalid or illegally obtained and could be revoked. That is Ubisoft’s policy guidance; it does not establish a measured risk rate for all publishers, games, or stores. See Ubisoft’s approved digital distributors.
Ubisoft’s list includes Green Man Gaming, Humble Bundle, Gamesplanet, Steam, and Ubisoft Store, among other retailers. It applies to Ubisoft titles and is not a universal approval list. For another publisher’s game, check that publisher’s own guidance rather than assuming Ubisoft’s list applies.

What to check before you buy
- Publisher approval: Look for the store on the relevant publisher’s approved-retailer list for that title. If the publisher does not publish such a list, do not treat another publisher’s approval as a substitute.
- Platform and edition: Confirm the key is for the platform you use—such as Steam or Ubisoft Connect—and the edition or contents you intend to buy. A low price is not useful if the key is for a different launcher or edition.
- Activation region and language: Read the specific listing’s country or region restrictions and language details. Ubisoft warns that buying from another country or region can leave a game region-locked or without support for the language you need.
- Checkout total: Compare the final checkout price, including any service fees shown, rather than relying only on the listing price.
- Key disclosure and refund rules: Find out when the key is revealed, whether revealing or activating it affects refund eligibility, and the time limit and conditions for a refund.
- Support and disputes: Identify who handles a faulty, invalid, or already-used key: the store, an individual marketplace seller, or the platform where you try to activate it.
How publisher-approved stores differ from marketplace listings
A publisher-approved retailer has a digital distribution agreement with that publisher for the relevant games or content. Approval is therefore title- and publisher-specific. A store’s presence on Ubisoft’s approved list is meaningful evidence for Ubisoft products, not proof that it is approved by every publisher.
On a marketplace, a listing can involve a third-party seller rather than a direct retail relationship with the publisher. Check who is selling the key, what recourse the marketplace provides, and whether the publisher names that store as an approved distributor. Seller ratings may help assess marketplace service, but they do not establish publisher authorization or guarantee that a key can be activated in your region.

Refunds depend on where you bought the key
Steam’s standard refund policy for qualifying games bought on Steam generally allows a request within two weeks of purchase if the game has been played for less than two hours. Valve explicitly says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys and Steam Wallet cards. If a third-party key fails, contact the retailer or marketplace where you bought it; do not assume Steam will refund the purchase. See Steam’s refund policy.
Retailer rules are different from platform rules and vary by store. For example, Fanatical’s terms set conditions for refunds of serial keys, including that a key has not been activated or downloaded and that the request is made within 14 days. The terms also say disclosed keys are generally not refundable except where verified faulty, subject to stated exceptions and applicable rules. A practical way to compare stores
Compare the same game and edition across the stores you are considering, then use this checklist to make the decision:
- Does the game’s publisher identify the store as an approved retailer?
- Does the listing match your platform, edition, activation country, and language?
- What is the full price at checkout, including displayed fees?
- When is the key disclosed, and does disclosure or activation limit a refund?
- What are the seller’s refund deadline and eligibility conditions?
- Who will handle an activation problem, and how do you contact support?
Retailer listings, approval lists, prices, availability, and terms can change. Confirm the details on the publisher’s and seller’s own pages immediately before paying.
