There is no single closest match among these picks. This guide groups nine named options from a GamesRadar editorial list by the experience they offer—and points out where each differs from Geralt’s adventure.
Choose by the part of The Witcher 3 you want more of
The Witcher 3 combines an authored single-player role-playing story, an open world, monster contracts, exploration, weapon and potion upgrades, combat magic, and consequential choices. CD PROJEKT RED’s official page describes more than 100 hours of core and side-quest gameplay for the game. That combination is why “similar” can mean very different things: one player may want another richly written journey, while another wants to track and fight monsters. CD PROJEKT RED’s official game page also explains that the Complete Edition includes the two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
| If you want… | Start with… | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| A story-led world with memorable characters | Red Dead Redemption 2 | Western setting and gunplay rather than fantasy and melee combat. |
| Big, physical monster battles | Dragon’s Dogma 2 | Action combat and climbing large enemies; the GamesRadar guide describes its world as smaller. |
| Monster hunting as the central activity | Monster Hunter: World | More combat- and progression-focused, with cooperative play; less like a comparable narrative journey. |
| Fantasy exploration and freedom | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Elden Ring | Skyrim gives more freedom to shape a character; Elden Ring is tougher and has less NPC interaction. |
| Dialogue choices and role-playing flexibility | Baldur’s Gate 3 or Dragon Age: Origins | More involved RPG systems; Baldur’s Gate 3 uses technical, turn-based combat. |
The recommendations below are preference matches, not an objective ranking or a claim that any game reproduces every part of The Witcher 3. The descriptions of how they compare come from GamesRadar’s editorial guide, not a cross-game measurement. Read GamesRadar’s guide.
Best for a story-led open world
Red Dead Redemption 2
Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if the strongest part of The Witcher 3 for you was spending time in a detailed world alongside a memorable cast. It is the clearest pick here for another expansive, story-first adventure. The major adjustment is combat: you leave Geralt’s swords and signs behind for guns in a Western setting. It shares the appeal of a world and its characters, not the fantasy monster-hunter premise.

Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 is a natural choice if you want another story-and-worldbuilding-focused RPG from CD PROJEKT RED but are open to a very different setting. It trades medieval fantasy for science-fiction city life, so it is a match for narrative ambition and authored worldbuilding rather than swords, monsters, or wilderness roaming. Check the platform and edition available to you before buying; availability can change.
Best for monster hunts and action combat
Dragon’s Dogma 2
Try Dragon’s Dogma 2 if the contracts and large-creature fights were what kept you returning to The Witcher 3. Its hands-on action combat includes climbing large enemies, making encounters feel physical and direct. GamesRadar characterizes its world as not as large as The Witcher 3’s, so approach it as a combat-focused alternative rather than a one-to-one open-world replacement.
Monster Hunter: World
Monster Hunter: World puts the hunt itself at the center: learn a monster, fight it, and build progression around the challenge. It is a strong option for players who want complex combat and the option to play cooperatively. It is less suited to someone looking for a similar character-driven narrative journey; its defining appeal is battling monsters, not following Geralt-like story arcs.
Best for fantasy roaming and discovery
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim is a fit if you want to roam a fantasy setting, uncover secrets, encounter monsters, and experiment with alchemy. Its key difference is the protagonist: rather than playing a tightly authored character like Geralt, you have more freedom to create and shape your own. That makes it appealing for open-ended fantasy role-playing, but less like The Witcher 3’s specific character and narrative.
Rank #2
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
Elden Ring
Choose Elden Ring for expansive fantasy exploration and a wide range of character builds, especially if you welcome a steeper challenge. GamesRadar describes it as substantially harder than The Witcher 3 and notes that it offers less interaction with NPCs. It is a strong fit for discovery and combat-driven exploration, not for the same density of conversational storytelling.
Best for consequential role-playing choices
Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 suits players who most value flexible quest solutions, role-playing choices, and substantial interaction with characters. Expect a different kind of RPG: its combat systems are more involved and turn-based, rather than The Witcher 3’s real-time action. GamesRadar also describes its world as smaller than The Witcher 3’s. Pick it for role-playing depth and choice, not to reproduce the same scale or combat rhythm.
Dragon Age: Origins
Dragon Age: Origins offers medieval fantasy, a varied cast, consequential dialogue decisions, and a challenging RPG campaign. It is a useful match if party-based role-playing and decisions matter more to you than a modern open-world format. It is an older game, so go in expecting an earlier-era RPG experience rather than a contemporary equivalent to The Witcher 3.
Best for action combat in a lore-rich world
Middle-earth: Shadow of War
Middle-earth: Shadow of War is worth considering for action combat and an open world built around the lore of Middle-earth. It is less focused on emotionally centered, character-driven storytelling than The Witcher 3, according to GamesRadar’s comparison. Choose it for its action and setting rather than expecting the same kind of intimate narrative journey.

Which game should you pick first?
- For another memorable cast and story-led world: start with Red Dead Redemption 2.
- For another CD PROJEKT RED narrative RPG: choose Cyberpunk 2077 if science fiction appeals more than fantasy.
- For monster fights: choose Dragon’s Dogma 2 for action encounters or Monster Hunter: World for a hunt-centered progression loop.
- For fantasy exploration: choose Skyrim for character freedom or Elden Ring for a harder, combat-focused challenge.
- For choices and role-playing systems: try Baldur’s Gate 3 for flexible quests and NPC interaction, or Dragon Age: Origins for an older fantasy campaign.
- For action in a familiar fantasy tradition: consider Middle-earth: Shadow of War, with the caveat that its emotional storytelling is less central.
