For a quick estimate of how long a game takes to beat, start with HowLongToBeat and choose the play style closest to your planned run. Use Backloggd or Completionator if you also want to log your own playthroughs or manage a game collection. These sites offer community estimates or player-entered records—not a guarantee of how long your own run will take.

Which site should you use?

Site Best for What its time information represents
HowLongToBeat Finding an estimate before you start a game Community estimates organized by play style, such as main story, additional content, and completionist play
Backloggd Tracking a personal library, play sessions, and game history Personal logs and time-related game metrics; these are not necessarily equivalent to HowLongToBeat’s play-style estimates
Completionator Managing a collection or backlog and recording completed games A player’s recorded completion time, which is distinct from a site-wide estimated duration

HowLongToBeat: estimates by play style

HowLongToBeat is the most direct option when you want to answer “How long does it take to beat [game]?” Its categories distinguish between a story-focused run, a run that includes extra content, and an effort to complete as much as possible. Xbox Wire’s 2022 description likewise explains the difference between a main-story path, additional quests or unlockables, and completionist play: Xbox Wire’s explanation of HowLongToBeat categories.

  • Main Story: Choose this for a run focused on finishing the central story.
  • Main + Sides: Choose this if you expect to take on optional quests or other substantial extras.
  • Completionist: Choose this if your goal is to complete nearly everything the game offers.

Pick the category that matches your intended run rather than treating the figures as interchangeable. The estimates come from community data and are planning references, not predictions for every player.

Backloggd: personal game logs and time metrics

Backloggd is geared toward tracking a personal game collection and play history. Its documented features include game logs, play sessions, time tracking, game statuses, and playthrough history. Its version 1.15.0 changelog, dated October 15, 2025, lists game-page metrics called “Avg Played,” “Time to Finish,” and “Time to Master”: Backloggd changelog.

Those features make Backloggd useful if you want to keep records alongside your library. Its time metrics and personal session logs are not necessarily the same kind of measurement as HowLongToBeat’s estimates for particular play styles.

Completionator: a collection and completion tracker

Completionator combines collection and backlog management with tools for recording game completions. Its FAQ explains that users can enter how long a playthrough took, information that may help other community members decide whether to play or buy a game: Completionator FAQ.

Use it when you want to document your own completed games as part of managing a collection. A time entered for one player’s run is a personal record, not automatically a site-wide estimate of how long a game takes.

How to interpret a game’s listed time

Before using a figure to plan a weekend or decide whether to start a long game, check what kind of playthrough it describes. A story-only estimate may not include optional missions, while a completionist estimate reflects a much broader goal. Community estimates and user-entered times can help set expectations, but individual play speed and choices affect the result.

There is no established basis here for calling one of these services the most accurate: they serve different purposes and present different kinds of time information. Compare them by whether you need a play-style estimate, a personal play log, or collection-management tools.
