Microsoft’s portable Xbox could challenge the Steam Deck, but the six features that make the case are proposals—not confirmed specifications for a separate first-party Microsoft handheld. The idea is worth watching because Microsoft is working with ASUS on an Xbox-branded portable experience and has talked about a broader family of devices. What that means for Steam, existing Xbox games, battery life, price, and a potential launch remains unsettled.
Is Microsoft making a Steam Deck competitor?
Microsoft has discussed a portable gaming device with ASUS, but that is not the same as announcing a distinct first-party Microsoft handheld with finalized hardware, price, or release date. In the Official Xbox Podcast, Xbox executive Phil Spencer described work with ASUS to bring Windows flexibility and a more purpose-built, console-like experience to a portable. He also identified battery life, interruptions, and performance as areas needing work.
In October 2026, GamesRadar reported Xbox CEO Asha Sharma saying, “We are moving to a family of devices for Gen-10,” and, “There is not one device that fits all. We will certainly have a great console first, but we also know that many players will be on the go.” These comments, reported from a company town hall via a transcript shared with Windows Central, point to a strategy—not a specification announcement for a Microsoft-made handheld.
The six ideas below come from Kyle Orland’s March 2025 Ars Technica feature. They describe what he thought Microsoft should build to compete with devices such as the Steam Deck OLED, not features Microsoft has confirmed for a separate first-party portable.

Six features that could make a portable Xbox compelling
1. A controller-first interface
A handheld needs menus that are legible on a small screen and easy to navigate with buttons and sticks. Orland’s proposal is a dedicated interface that puts games and useful settings within quick reach, rather than making players work through a mouse-oriented Windows desktop. A polished interface could make the device feel more like a console without giving up PC flexibility; no particular interface for a separate first-party Microsoft handheld has been confirmed.
2. A gaming-focused operating system
Orland also proposed streamlining Windows for portable play, limiting distractions and unnecessary background work. That could, in theory, help with responsiveness or battery life, but those are expected benefits—not measured results from a Microsoft handheld. Spencer has separately acknowledged that battery life, interruptions, and performance still need attention on the ASUS project.
3. Access to PC storefronts beyond Xbox
For players with libraries spread across PC stores, the ability to install games from Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG, and other storefronts could be a major advantage. Spencer said of the ASUS device discussed in the podcast: “Windows is an open platform, and we want to support that on this device, meaning if you’ve got a storefront that you love, we want to make sure that that’s fully supported here.” That supports the direction of storefront choice for that project; it does not establish how every future Xbox device will work.
Microsoft reports that the number of players playing Xbox games across multiple devices grew 28% year over year in 2025, a figure Spencer cited while discussing Xbox Play Anywhere. It is a company-reported measure of multi-device play—not handheld sales, an independent demand estimate, or evidence that a particular portable will succeed.

4. Official access to older Xbox games on PC
A portable that could run backward-compatible Xbox games from the original Xbox or Xbox 360 era would offer something beyond the usual PC-handheld pitch. Orland proposed official access to those console titles on a Windows-based device, while noting that technical work would be required. Neither the podcast nor the other cited public comments confirm that this capability is coming to an ASUS device or a separate Microsoft handheld.
Cloud streaming is a different proposition. Microsoft’s Steam Deck Xbox Cloud Gaming setup guide uses Microsoft Edge and a community-maintained Flatpak package. Microsoft says it does not actively maintain that package and does not officially support Edge on SteamOS. The guide describes cloud play; it is not a method for installing and locally running Xbox console games on the Deck.
5. A choice of hardware tiers
Orland suggested that Microsoft could offer different price, power, size, or screen options, rather than betting on one configuration. Different tiers could serve players who prioritize portability or cost as well as those seeking more performance. This remains a product-strategy idea: the 2025 feature did not announce models or prices, and the later public comments do not confirm them.
6. A “Made for Xbox” compatibility program
A certification or compatibility label could help buyers understand which games work well on the device and whether controls, display, and performance have been accounted for. Orland proposed a system comparable in purpose to Valve’s Deck Verified initiative. Microsoft has not announced such a certification program for a separate first-party handheld.

What would determine whether it really challenges Steam Deck?
The comparison is not settled by the Xbox name or access to a large game library. A useful judgment would depend on how the actual devices handle everyday play:
- Ease of use: Can players launch games, adjust settings, and navigate the system without falling back to desktop-style controls?
- Libraries and compatibility: Which PC storefronts work, which games run well, and is any local access to older Xbox console games actually supported?
- Performance and battery: How do real games perform, and how long does the device last under comparable play conditions?
- Screen and form factor: Does the size, display, and control layout suit the games and the way a player wants to travel?
- Price and choice: Are there useful configurations at prices buyers can justify?
- Confidence before purchase: Is there a clear, trustworthy way to tell whether a game is compatible?
The available public statements do not establish a complete, like-for-like performance or battery comparison, nor do they supply confirmed specifications, prices, or release timing for a distinct first-party Microsoft portable. A current comparison with the ROG Xbox Ally X can help readers assess the ASUS partnership device, but it should not be treated as proof that a separate Microsoft handheld—or all six proposed features—exists.
Should Steam Deck owners wait?
If you want a handheld now, make the choice against the games you already play and the way you want to use the device, rather than waiting on unconfirmed first-party hardware. Steam Deck owners can use Microsoft’s documented Edge-based route for Xbox Cloud Gaming, with the package and SteamOS support limitations described above. If your main reason to wait is native access to Xbox console back-catalogue games, a special Windows interface, or a certification label, those remain proposals rather than confirmed capabilities.
For anyone considering a future portable Xbox, the sensible point to reassess is when Microsoft or its partners publish concrete details: supported stores and games, interface, battery and performance information, configurations, price, and availability. Until then, “Steam Deck killer” is a question about what Microsoft might deliver, not a verdict about a shipping first-party product.
