Sixty Four turns a simple act of breaking cubes into an increasingly intricate automated factory. The pleasure is in making each part of the system work better; the unease, as Ars Technica reporter Kevin Purdy describes it, is that the system keeps expanding without offering a clear reason to do so.
How Sixty Four turns cube-breaking into a factory
Sixty Four begins in a blank white space with an Extracting Channel. Cubes emerge from it, and clicking them breaks them into smaller cubes and resources. Those resources buy machines that accelerate extraction and processing, setting up a loop: extract, break down, invest, and extract more.
At first, progress depends on clicking and choosing upgrades. Then the work shifts toward arranging machines that improve, feed, or recover resources from one another. Steam describes the solo-developed game as becoming more idle with each machine unlocked, with full automation as the eventual goal.
More resources mean more constraints
In Purdy’s account, new resources do not simply make the factory richer; they create fresh production problems to solve. An Extracting Channel gives way to equipment such as fans, a pressure pump, and destabilizers. Later machines can automate clicking or increase extraction. As dependencies deepen, the player adds channels and links more stages into a larger production chain.

The result is a system-design toy in a literal sense: each machine has a role, and progress comes from figuring out how its output can support another part of the factory. Steam describes the mechanics as a mix of idle, incremental, and strategy play, alongside abstract machines and messages from an unknown entity.
Why the optimization can feel dark
Purdy’s reading is that the game’s satisfying expansion has an unsettling edge. He compares its growth to oil barons at the height of the Gilded Age: the factory becomes more capable, but there is no obvious external purpose that makes endless extraction feel worthwhile. That is his response to the game, not an established statement of developer intent or a proven psychological effect on players.
The tension comes from the same loop that makes the game engaging. Every new machine can improve the system, and every improvement opens the way to more extraction and more interdependence. The player is invited to optimize, but the question of what all that optimization is for remains unresolved. Purdy captured his mixed reaction this way: “I’m still not sure I’ve ever played a $6 game that had me so fully engaged while also deeply disquieted about the nature of humanity.” The $6 was his description in March 2024, not a current price.

Purdy notes that the isometric view can make some objects harder to see. He says a transparency control and night-mode toggle help with readability, and that sound can be turned off. Those observations come from his March 2024 account; the Steam page is the place to check current store information.
When the Steam listing was accessed on October 8, 2026, it displayed 1,607 user reviews and 73% positive. Those figures are a changeable store snapshot, not a representative study of all players. The listing also showed a 50% promotion in a regional currency at that time; that does not establish a current or universal price.
