You do not normally install SkToolbox on a dedicated server just to use it as a player, but a server operator needs a separate, compatible BepInEx server setup for any server-side mods. Because its commands can affect players and the shared world, agree on rules, keep backups, and verify commands on a test copy before using them in multiplayer.

What SkToolbox is—and what “on your server” means
SkToolbox is a downloadable Valheim utility by Skrip. Its stated purpose is to extend the functionality of Valheim’s console and chat commands, rather than add a separate in-game menu. The current Thunderstore package listing identifies version 1.10.5, describes the mod as client-side, and lists BepInEx as a required dependency.

“Client-side” answers the most common installation question: a player generally installs SkToolbox in that player’s Valheim client. Installing the mod in your game directory is not the same as installing a mod on a dedicated server. Nevertheless, commands can affect a player, the environment, or other players, so a client-side installation can still change a shared world. Whether a particular command is accepted also depends on the Valheim build, world context, multiplayer permissions, and the SkToolbox version.
If you operate a dedicated server and want server-side mods, treat that as a separate project. The server needs its own BepInEx-enabled installation and a deployment method supported by the server software or host. Do not assume that installing SkToolbox on your PC installs anything on the server, or that every managed host permits arbitrary BepInEx files.

Before installing: requirements and checks
- A working Valheim installation. Close the game and launcher before copying files.
- BepInEx. SkToolbox will not load without the Valheim-compatible BepInEx setup required by the package.
- A matching package version. The current listing names SkToolbox 1.10.5, but older pages show builds such as 1.8.4. Check the package’s supported Valheim context before using an older DLL with a newer game build.
- File access. Manual installation requires permission to write to the Valheim game directory. On a managed server, you also need a host that supports the relevant BepInEx workflow.
- A recovery plan for shared worlds. Back up the world before using terrain, inventory, teleport, spawn, or player-affecting commands.
Do not launch the game from the main menu and immediately judge the mod by a failed command. The package documents errors when commands are run in the main menu, and several command features are known to be imperfect. Load into the appropriate world or server context, then test with the in-game help command.
Choose an installation route

Both routes still require BepInEx. A manager that merely downloads the SkToolbox package without creating a working BepInEx installation is not enough.
Install SkToolbox with a mod manager
- Install or verify BepInEx for Valheim. Use a manager profile that explicitly includes a functioning Valheim BepInEx setup. Start Valheim once if the profile requires it to generate its folders.
- Add the SkToolbox package. Select the current package version offered by the manager and confirm that it is being installed into the Valheim profile, not into a different game or an unmodded profile.
- Check the profile’s enabled state. A downloaded package that is disabled, assigned to another profile, or blocked by a dependency warning will not load.
- Launch Valheim through the modded profile. Starting a plain, unmodded shortcut can bypass the manager’s BepInEx configuration.
- Verify before joining others. Enter a local or disposable world, open the console, and run
helpor/?. If the command list does not appear, stop and inspect BepInEx’s log before joining a shared server.
The exact labels differ between managers, but the checks are the same: BepInEx must be active, SkToolbox must be enabled in that profile, and the game must be launched through the profile that owns those files.

Install SkToolbox manually
- Close Valheim. Do not overwrite a plugin while the game is running.
- Install BepInEx first. Follow the Valheim-specific BepInEx setup and launch once if necessary so the loader creates its directory structure.
- Open the Valheim game root. The correct destination is the folder containing
Valheim.exeandUnityPlayer.dll. - Extract the SkToolbox archive into that root. After extraction,
Valheim.exe,UnityPlayer.dll, and theBepInExfolder should be at the same directory level. Avoid creating an extra nested folder such asValheim/SkToolbox/Valheim/BepInEx. - For an update on an existing BepInEx installation, place the SkToolbox DLL in
BepInEx/plugins. Preserve the rest of the BepInEx structure; do not replace the entire loader directory with an archive from a different game or version. - Launch Valheim and test locally. Open the console after entering a world and run
helpor/?. A missing command list usually means the loader, path, or profile is wrong rather than that a particular command has bad arguments.
How to recognize the correct folder
Open the folder you selected and look for the three items at the same level: the Valheim executable, UnityPlayer, and BepInEx. If the archive created a second folder containing those items, move the contents up one level or extract again into the actual game root. The plugin itself belongs under BepInEx/plugins, not beside the executable in a newly invented folder.
First use: console and chat commands
Once the mod is loaded and you are inside a usable world context, open Valheim’s console and enter help or /?. The package documentation also supports the slash form as a chat command. Many commands can be entered in either place, but behavior can vary by version and context; use the help output shown by your installed build as the final syntax reference.

The slash prefix is appropriate when entering a command through chat. In the console, the package may accept the same command without the slash; if one form fails, consult help rather than repeatedly guessing. Do not copy syntax from an old 1.8.4-era guide into a 1.10.5 installation without checking the current command list.

Does SkToolbox need to be installed on the server?
Joining someone else’s world
For the client-side package described by the current listing, install SkToolbox on the player’s Valheim client. A server operator does not automatically need the SkToolbox DLL merely because one player uses it. The practical limitation is that a command may still be rejected or behave differently if the current world, permissions, or Valheim version does not allow the requested action.
Running a dedicated server
A dedicated server is a separate software instance. If you want server-side BepInEx mods, install and maintain BepInEx in the server environment using a workflow that supports that server build. A general Valheim server-mod guide can explain the loader and deployment concepts, but it does not establish that SkToolbox itself is server-side or that a particular host supports it. Confirm support with the host or server documentation before uploading files.
Why a client-side command can still affect everyone
SkToolbox’s documentation warns that commands can modify a player, the environment, or other players. “Client-side” describes where the mod runs; it does not mean its actions are harmless or private. In a shared world, spawning entities, changing terrain, teleporting, stopping events, or altering another player’s state can change what everyone experiences. Treat command access as an administrative privilege even when the DLL is installed only on one client.

Multiplayer operating rules that prevent damage
- Get explicit agreement. Tell players which commands are allowed and whether cheats or progression changes are acceptable.
- Assign a command operator. Limiting use to the host or a named administrator reduces accidental changes and disputes.
- Back up before high-impact actions. Make a fresh copy of the world before terrain optimization, mass spawning, inventory changes, teleports, or event control.
- Use a disposable test world. Reproduce a command with the same mod and Valheim versions before running it in the primary save.
- Record what changed. Note the command, time, player, and intended result so a rollback decision is possible.
- Warn connected players. Teleports, event changes, and entity spawns can interrupt building or combat without warning.
If a command has an irreversible or uncertain effect, do not experiment on the only copy of a community world. A backup is useful only if it is stored separately and you know how to restore it.
Troubleshoot a non-working installation
The console has no SkToolbox commands
- Confirm that BepInEx itself loads in the same Valheim installation.
- Check that the SkToolbox DLL is under
BepInEx/pluginsor is enabled in the manager profile actually used to launch the game. - Verify that the game root contains
Valheim.exe,UnityPlayer.dll, andBepInExat the same level if you installed manually. - Open the BepInEx log and look for a missing dependency, loading exception, or path that points to a different Valheim directory.
- Enter a world before testing; the package lists errors from running commands in the main menu.
The mod appears loaded, but one command fails
A failed command is not automatically an installation failure. The current package notes known issues involving command aliasing, autorun, command chaining, hotkeys, and autocomplete for some commands. Check the exact spelling and syntax printed by help, try the command in the console instead of chat (or vice versa), and test it in a local world. If only one command fails while the rest of the list works, treat it as a command or compatibility issue first.
Commands worked before a Valheim update
Game updates can change loader compatibility, command behavior, or the context in which a command is accepted. Confirm the SkToolbox package version against the current Valheim build, update BepInEx when the package requires it, and read the current package notes. Historical guides that describe version 1.8.4 or older loader assumptions are not reliable instructions for a 1.10.5 setup.

The manager and manual files conflict
Do not troubleshoot two installations at once. Disable the manager profile, remove or archive the manually copied DLL, and launch one known configuration. Multiple copies can make it unclear which package version is loading and can produce misleading log entries.

Recheck the client/server distinction. A client-side SkToolbox installation does not install a server plugin. If your goal is a server-side mod, verify that the server has its own supported BepInEx deployment and that the host permits it. If the host does not support that workflow, use a self-managed server or a different, explicitly supported setup rather than copying client files blindly.
Updating, disabling, and rolling back
Updating SkToolbox
- Back up the world and note the currently working SkToolbox and BepInEx versions.
- Close Valheim and stop any server process affected by the update.
- For a manager profile, update the package in that profile and check dependency warnings before launching.
- For a manual setup, replace the SkToolbox DLL in
BepInEx/pluginswith the intended version; do not mix files from unrelated archives. - Launch a test world, run
helpor/?, and exercise only low-impact commands first. - Move to the shared world only after the test passes and the package notes do not identify a blocking compatibility problem.
Disabling the mod
Use the manager’s disable control when installed through a profile. For a manual installation, close the game and move the SkToolbox DLL out of BepInEx/plugins to a clearly named backup folder. Keeping the original DLL lets you restore the exact version without downloading an unknown build.
Rolling back after a problem
Stop using commands, close the game, restore the previous DLL or manager profile, and restore the world backup if the save was changed. Do not continue testing on the only copy while deciding whether the issue is the mod, BepInEx, or the game update.
Self-managed versus managed server operation

This choice matters only if you need server-side software or want someone else to operate the server. It does not change the basic fact that the SkToolbox package itself is described as client-side. Before purchasing or migrating, ask the provider whether the exact Valheim build, BepInEx version, file access method, and backup/restore workflow are supported.
A low-risk workflow for using commands
- Confirm the package and BepInEx versions and make a world backup.
- Launch the same profile you intend to use in multiplayer.
- Load a test world rather than the community save.
- Run
helpor/?and copy the syntax shown for the command you need. - Try a read-only or low-impact command such as
/coordsbefore changing inventory, terrain, events, or entities. - Record the result and any error in the BepInEx log.
- Tell other players what you are about to do, then run the command once.
- Verify the world state and keep the backup until everyone agrees the result is correct.
Bottom line
Install BepInEx, add SkToolbox to the client through a manager or by extracting it into the Valheim game root, and verify it with help or /? inside a loaded world. The current package is client-side, so it is not automatically a dedicated-server installation; server-side modding requires a separate BepInEx workflow and host support. Keep the package version aligned with Valheim, expect some documented command and hotkey limitations, and use backups and agreed permissions whenever a command can change a shared world.
