The Skull and Bones open beta ran from February 8 to 11, 2024, ahead of the game’s February 16 launch. It offered a bounded preview of a game Ubisoft described as an online naval action RPG: the ships and sea were the center of the experience. That focus could make the game compelling as a pirate ship game, but it also left a gap for players who expected to roam islands on foot or board enemy vessels themselves. Calling the beta “sunk by scope” is a critical interpretation of that mismatch—not a measured verdict shared by every player.
What the open beta included
Ubisoft’s open beta was available February 8–11, 2024, on PC through Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Ubisoft capped beta progression at Infamy Brigand (Tier 6 Rank 1). Players who bought the game could carry their progress into the release version, which launched February 16, 2024. Those dates and the cap matter: the beta was a short preview, not a full account of the released live-service game.
Ubisoft framed Skull and Bones as an online naval action RPG. Its store description emphasizes ship combat, build choices, and sailing skill as the route to becoming a pirate legend. The official framing therefore sets an expectation of a game built around ships rather than a general-purpose pirate adventure.
Why the ship-focused game could work
A focused naval game has a clear appeal: the player’s vessel, how it is equipped, and how it handles are the main tools for taking on the world. That focus gives ship combat and build choices room to define the experience. For someone chiefly seeking to sail and fight at sea, a narrower scope is not automatically a flaw; it can be the reason to play.

#1 Best Overall
- Engage in thrilling naval battles and equip a multitude of powerful weapons as you risk it all for the biggest loot.
- Sail the lawless seas solo, or team up with two friends or other players to partake in shareable contracts and rewards.
- Face cutthroat pirate hunters, deadly sea monsters, unpredictable weather, dangerous rogue waves, supernatural threats, and more as you explore a vast open world.
- Craft and sail up to 10 different ships at launch, each with unique perks to match your own personal playstyle.
- Grow your infamy and unlock resources and opportunities to get riskier contracts and upgrade your equipment.
But the same focus can feel restrictive if “pirate game” brings a broader picture to mind: stepping ashore, exploring islands on foot, or boarding another ship in person. A discussion on r/Games titled “Skull and Bones beta impressions?” included a player complaint about the absence of hand-to-hand boarding and deep on-foot island exploration. That is a useful example of the expectation gap, not evidence that most beta players felt the same way.
What “sunk by scope” means—and what it does not
The title’s critique is best understood as a question of fit. Ubisoft’s stated design centers naval action; some players approached the beta hoping for a pirate world with substantial activities beyond the ship. If those broader expectations are the yardstick, the game can seem too narrow. If ship combat and sailing are the point, that same concentration may be a strength.

The available player discussion does not establish that Ubisoft promised boarding or extensive on-foot exploration, nor does one thread show a consensus. It instead illustrates why a game can satisfy its stated naval premise while disappointing players who expected a wider pirate fantasy. The criticism is about the scope a player wanted, not proof that the game failed an explicit promise.
Ubisoft said feedback shaped the game
In a February 7, 2024 PlayStation.Blog article about the PS5 version, Ubisoft said: “The community feedback we received has helped us to improve the game, especially in our co-op, naval combat, and gameplay variety.” The statement shows the publisher’s account of iteration in those areas. It does not, by itself, demonstrate that every concern raised by players was addressed or that the broader on-foot expectations were met.

How to read these beta impressions now
Because the beta took place before launch and stopped at a defined progression cap, it should be read as a time-limited preview, not a report on the game’s current state or a substitute for evaluating the released game. Its clearest lesson is about expectations: Skull and Bones presented itself as a naval action RPG, while at least some players wanted more of the pirate experience to happen off the ship.
