Skulls of the Shogun is a comic turn-based strategy game set in a supernatural samurai afterlife. Its appeal is the blend of quick turns, tactical positioning and skull-powered upgrades, wrapped in an offbeat campaign. It is a good fit for players who want compact strategy rather than a sprawling, simulation-heavy war game; multiplayer details depend on platform, and Steam no longer offers the older asynchronous mode.

What is Skulls of the Shogun?

Developed and published by 17-BIT, Skulls of the Shogun follows General Akamoto, betrayed before his greatest battle and sent to the afterlife. There, ghost samurai, magical animal monks and rival generals turn the afterlife into a battlefield. The game’s official description cites Advance Wars as an inspiration, with fighting-game flair added to its turn-based strategy.

The comedy is part of the game’s identity, not just decoration. 17-BIT studio director Raj Joshi described its design as a mash-up of turn-based strategy and fighting-game flair, aiming for fast rounds, considered tactics and deliberately irreverent humor. Jake Kazdal, 17-BIT founder and CEO, said the afterlife setting made room for strange magic and otherworldly characters. The result is a knowingly silly premise paired with a recognizable tactical format.

How does the strategy play?

The central appeal is a brisk, approachable style of turn-based combat. You move and position units, make use of terrain and unit abilities, and decide how to spend the skulls left by defeated enemies. Those skulls can strengthen units, but using them to upgrade your general competes with spending them to heal grunts. That gives each skull a practical opportunity cost: improving a key unit now may mean leaving another vulnerable.

  • FAMILY FUN FROM GRANDPA BECK’S GAMES: Nearly 4 million games sold worldwide! Discover thoughtfully designed card games that bring families and friends together.

GameSpot’s review described the gameplay as approachable and engaging, while noting that terrain and monks can sometimes be bypassed in favor of direct attacks. That points to a useful question for prospective players: do you enjoy a strategy game that encourages fast decisions and flexible aggression, or do you prefer maps where careful positioning and terrain control are consistently central? The game’s pace is a selling point, but players seeking deep, slow-burn tactical systems may find its compact approach less demanding than they want.

Its most distinctive mechanic also ties the tactics to the setting. Eating skulls is both a supernatural flourish and a resource decision, connecting combat victories to your army’s growth and survival. Whether the comedic presentation enhances the strategy will come down to taste: it gives the game a strong personality, but its broad humor is prominent throughout.

How much single-player content is there?

Official listings describe a 24-level single-player campaign. That gives solo players a defined campaign rather than an open-ended strategy sandbox. Nintendo’s US Switch page also highlights four magical animal monks, while Steam’s Bone-a-Fide Edition listing adds an episode, the Tanuki Monk, progression features and developer commentary. These edition details are specific to the respective store listings.

Can you play Skulls of the Shogun with friends?

Multiplayer support varies by platform and mode. Steam describes Skulls Online as real-time multiplayer and says the earlier asynchronous Skulls Anywhere mode is no longer offered there. Older announcements should therefore not be treated as proof that asynchronous play is currently available on Steam.

Is Skulls of the Shogun worth playing?

It is worth considering if you want a compact, humorous strategy campaign built around quick turns and a memorable resource mechanic. Its strongest distinguishing feature is the way skull collection makes victories feed directly into decisions about strengthening or healing your army. The trade-off is that the game’s pace and occasional emphasis on direct attacks may not satisfy players looking for consistently intricate terrain puzzles or a more serious tone.

That is a historical review opinion, not a measure of current player consensus. For a sense of the game’s original pitch, 17-BIT’s official game page links to its platform listings; the Windows Experience Blog also covered its Windows Store launch.
