Skyborne are a neutral race with four classes available to both factions. Warriors, Hunters, Rogues and Druids can be created as either Horde Windshapers or Alliance High-Order Skyborne. The faction determines the fifth class: Horde adds Shaman, while Alliance adds Mage. Every Skyborne also receives Walk on Air, 1% Haste, and 5% increased damage against Elementals, with a different faction active ability for movement or regeneration.
Creating one requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher World of Warcraft: Forever special edition. The racial figures below include beta-era values, so treat the faction-active numbers as subject to change before final launch.

What classes can Skyborne play?
Skyborne class access is split into a shared core and one faction-exclusive option. The shared classes are Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid. Horde Skyborne, called Windshapers, can also choose Shaman. Alliance Skyborne, known as the High Order, can instead choose Mage.

Blizzard describes race and class as the two choices that define a hero’s fantasy and role. In practical terms, the faction choice matters only if you want the exclusive class or prefer one faction active. If you intend to play Warrior, Hunter, Rogue or Druid, either faction gives access to the same class list.

Shared classes
- Warrior: a weapon-focused option suited to players who want a direct martial identity and, depending on the available specializations, damage or protection responsibilities.
- Hunter: a ranged damage choice built around weapons, a companion and mobility. It is the most immediately natural fit if you want to stay at range while exploring.
- Rogue: a stealth-oriented melee damage class for players who value positioning, ambushes and control.
- Druid: the most flexible shared choice. Druid forms traditionally cover damage, healing and protection, making it the best option when you want one character to fill different roles. The exact specialization lineup and tuning should be checked against the current Forever build.
Horde-only Shaman
Shaman is the Windshaper’s extra class. Its elemental identity complements the race’s pact with the spirits of Skywall, and its traditional toolkit combines damage, healing and utility. Pick Horde when the ability to play Shaman is more important than the Alliance’s Mage option, or when elemental magic is central to your character concept.
Alliance-only Mage
Mage is exclusive to the High Order. It is the clearest choice for a Skyborne who wants ranged arcane damage, teleportation-style utility and a strongly Highborne-inspired fantasy. If your priority is an arcane caster rather than an elemental hybrid, Alliance is the required faction.
Skyborne racial abilities explained
All Skyborne share three racial benefits. Their faction adds one active ability, so the baseline is identical until you choose Horde or Alliance.

Walk on Air
Walk on Air is a controlled descent rather than unrestricted flight. Activate it when leaving a ledge, dropping into a valley or correcting a jump so that you descend safely for up to 10 seconds. It does not replace a mount, a permanent flying skill or a teleport. Its value is practical: it can shorten travel routes and reduce the risk of fall damage while questing and exploring.
Wind Blessed
The 1% Haste bonus applies across spellcasting, melee and ranged attacks. That broad wording means it benefits every Skyborne class, but the size is deliberately modest. It should be treated as a small, always-on advantage rather than a reason to select a class you do not enjoy. Haste’s exact breakpoints and contribution to each Forever specialization can change with tuning.

Elemental Insight
Elemental Insight increases damage against Elemental enemies by 5%. It is strongest in zones, dungeons or quests populated by Elementals and has no stated benefit against other creature types. The racial is therefore encounter-dependent: useful for an Elemental-heavy activity, irrelevant to a target that is not an Elemental.
Horde: Skysight
Skysight is the Windshaper utility button. Wowhead’s description distinguishes between finding an elemental convergence and failing to find one. Without a convergence, the listed reward is 10% movement and mounted-movement speed for 30 seconds. When a convergence is found, the effect is listed as lasting 15 minutes. Because this is a location-sensitive effect, the real value depends on where you activate it and whether the world contains the required convergence.

Read Ley Line is the High Order’s alternative active. Wowhead records 100% health and mana regeneration for 15 seconds when no ley line is available and 15 minutes when a nearby ley line is found. That makes it a recovery and sustain tool rather than a combat damage cooldown. It can be attractive during long exploration sessions or downtime between encounters.
Icy Veins presents shorter summary figures for the two faction actives: 10% regeneration for Read Ley Line and 10% movement speed for Skysight. Those values do not match Wowhead’s more detailed entries. Both sets are beta-era descriptions, so verify the tooltip in the live Forever client before relying on a precise duration, percentage or trigger condition.
Horde Windshaper or Alliance High Order?
There is no universally stronger faction. The right answer depends on your class, the role you want to perform and whether you value movement or regeneration more than the opposing faction’s exclusive class.

Choose Horde if Shaman is your intended class
Because Shaman is not available to Alliance Skyborne, this is a hard gate rather than a minor preference. Windshaper is also the thematically consistent choice for a character built around elemental spirits. The movement component of Skysight can help when travelling between objectives, although its exact uptime depends on finding a convergence.
Choose Alliance if Mage is your intended class
Mage requires the High-Order faction. The arcane and ley-line story makes Alliance the natural fit for a character who treats Skyborne heritage as a continuation of Highborne magical practice. Read Ley Line’s regeneration profile favors players who prefer recovery utility to travel speed, subject to the final tooltip.
Choose either faction for the four shared classes
If your class is Warrior, Hunter, Rogue or Druid, the class list does not force a faction decision. Compare the two racial actives, your preferred faction story and the friends or guild community with which you plan to play. The shared 1% Haste, 5% Elemental damage and Walk on Air remain the same on both sides.
How the Skyborne story explains the split
Warcraft Forever presents the Skyborne as Highborne exiles who made a pact with the wind spirits of Skywall. Their starting area is Zephras Isle. Icy Veins’ account adds the political history: the Shen’drallar rebelled against Prince Tortheldrin, fled Eldre’Thalas and eventually divided into two traditions.
The High Order
The High Order preserved an arcane-centered identity. That history leads into the Alliance’s Mage access and the Read Ley Line ability. Ley lines represent the faction’s effort to draw power from the magical infrastructure around it rather than from an elemental convergence.

The Windshapers
The Windshapers embraced elemental practice and the spirits of wind. Their Horde affiliation grants Shaman access and Skysight, reinforcing a character concept built around air, movement and elemental alliances.
The lore distinction is useful when choosing a character, but it does not change the shared class options. A Horde Druid and an Alliance Druid still use the same four-class core; the story mainly explains why the exclusive options and active abilities differ.
Which Skyborne class fits your role?
Start with the role you expect to play, then use faction as the tie-breaker. The racial passives are deliberately broad, so class enjoyment and group function should come first.
- Decide whether you need a tank, healer or damage character. Druid offers the broadest role flexibility among the shared classes. Warrior is the martial protection choice. Mage, Hunter and Rogue are primarily damage-focused identities, while Shaman combines damage, healing and utility on the Horde side.
- Pick your preferred combat range. Mage and Hunter are ranged-focused choices. Rogue and Warrior emphasize melee combat. Druid and Shaman can move between roles or damage styles depending on their available specializations.
- Choose your fantasy. Wind, spirits and elemental practice point toward Horde Shaman or a Windshaper shared class. Ley lines, arcane study and Highborne tradition point toward Alliance Mage or a High-Order shared class.
- Use the faction active as the final tie-breaker. Select Horde if movement speed is more useful to your routine; select Alliance if regeneration and mana recovery are more valuable. Confirm the final in-game values because the beta descriptions disagree.
Is the Skyborne pack required?
Yes. Wowhead reports that Skyborne access is unlocked by purchasing a World of Warcraft: Forever pack. Its September 17, 2026 update lists the Skyborne Heroic Pack at $29.99/€29.99. A Heroic Pack or a higher special edition is required to create a Skyborne character.

Before purchasing
- Confirm that the edition explicitly includes Skyborne character access.
- Check whether the purchase is applied to the World of Warcraft: Forever account and region where you intend to play.
- Do not assume that a promotional bundle or a renamed edition retains the same entitlement after launch.
- After purchase, restart the client or account session if the character-creation option does not appear immediately.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming neutral means every class is shared
Neutral describes the race’s ability to join either faction; it does not make Mage and Shaman available everywhere. Mage is Alliance-only and Shaman is Horde-only.
Treating beta tooltips as final numbers
The two published summaries disagree on the faction actives. Use the current in-game tooltip at launch for exact percentages and durations, especially for Skysight’s convergence condition and Read Ley Line’s regeneration value.
Overvaluing the 1% Haste passive
Wind Blessed benefits all Skyborne classes, but it is a small passive. Do not abandon a preferred role, faction story or exclusive class for a marginal theoretical gain.

Expecting Walk on Air to be flight
Walk on Air lasts 10 seconds and controls a downward glide. It helps with vertical travel and landing safely; it is not permanent flight or a replacement for a mount.
Choosing a faction before checking the edition entitlement
The character option will remain unavailable if the account lacks the Heroic Pack or higher edition. Verify access first, then decide between Windshaper and High Order.
