SkyDrive is no longer a current Windows product. Microsoft renamed SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro to OneDrive and OneDrive for Business in an announcement dated January 27, 2014. The supported way to access that cloud storage today is Microsoft OneDrive, either through its Windows sync client or through the web service.
If an old guide tells you to download SkyDrive for Windows, do not look for a separate SkyDrive installer. Install or open OneDrive instead, then use its folder in Windows File Explorer. Your files may still be available under the Microsoft account used for the former SkyDrive service, subject to the account and the Windows version you are using.

What happened to SkyDrive?
SkyDrive was Microsoft’s cloud-storage and synchronization service. On January 27, 2014, Microsoft announced that “SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro will soon become OneDrive and OneDrive for Business!” The company said existing SkyDrive users’ content would remain available as the name changed.

Is SkyDrive still available as a download?
There is no supported current SkyDrive-branded installer for Windows. Old pages, archived downloads or third-party packages that still use the SkyDrive name do not represent Microsoft’s maintained Windows client. The current software to look for is OneDrive.
Why does Windows show OneDrive instead of SkyDrive?
That is the expected result of Microsoft’s 2014 rename. A OneDrive folder, OneDrive icon or OneDrive entry in File Explorer is the modern continuation of the same broad cloud-storage and synchronization role. The different label does not by itself indicate that your files were deleted or moved to an unrelated service.
How to access former SkyDrive files now
Use the route that matches what you need: the web service for a quick check from any supported browser, or the OneDrive Windows client when you want files represented in File Explorer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the web service first
- Open Microsoft’s current OneDrive web service.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the old SkyDrive content.
- Look for the folders and files that were stored in SkyDrive.
The web route is useful when you are on an unsupported Windows installation, when you do not want to synchronize a large collection, or when you are checking whether an older account still contains the files. Web access does not require every cloud file to be downloaded to the computer.

Use the Windows client for File Explorer access
Microsoft’s current Windows instructions are to install OneDrive for the computer and work with the synchronized files in Windows File Explorer. During setup, OneDrive lets you choose which folders to synchronize. The selected content then appears in the OneDrive folder on the PC.
This arrangement gives you a normal File Explorer view while OneDrive manages whether each item is stored locally or remains in the cloud. It is the appropriate replacement for instructions that once said to install SkyDrive and place files in a SkyDrive folder.
Install and set up OneDrive on Windows
The exact screens can change as Microsoft updates Windows and OneDrive, but the supported workflow is consistent: obtain the current OneDrive client, sign in, choose the folders you want synchronized, and then manage local availability from File Explorer.
- Get the current OneDrive client. Use Microsoft’s current OneDrive download or the OneDrive installation already provided with a supported Windows edition. Avoid obsolete SkyDrive-branded installers.
- Start OneDrive and sign in. Use the Microsoft account that contains the files you want to reach. If you sign in with a different account, the expected folders may not appear.
- Choose synchronization folders. OneDrive’s setup lets you select which folders should be synchronized to that computer. Selecting fewer folders can reduce local storage use and limit the amount of content shown in File Explorer.
- Open the OneDrive folder in File Explorer. The selected cloud content is represented there. File status indicators show whether an item is online-only or stored on the device.
- Set local availability for individual items. Use Always keep on this device for files or folders that must be available without an internet connection. Use Free up space when you want to remove the local copy and return the item to online-only status.
Folder selection and file availability are separate controls. You can synchronize a folder so it is visible in File Explorer, while still allowing individual files inside it to remain online-only until needed.

Files On-Demand: the key difference between cloud and local files
Files On-Demand allows OneDrive to show cloud files in File Explorer without downloading every file or consuming equivalent local disk space. It is the main feature to understand when replacing an old SkyDrive workflow.
| File state | Local disk use | Offline access | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online-only | The file is visible in File Explorer without a full local copy. | Requires an internet connection when you open or download the file. | Leave the item in its cloud-managed state when conserving disk space matters. |
| Always keep on this device | The file or folder consumes local storage. | Available for offline work after it has been kept on the device. | Choose this status for travel, unreliable connectivity or files needed without internet access. |
When to choose online-only
- Your OneDrive contains more data than the computer’s available storage.
- You need a complete view of folders but use only a small portion of the files regularly.
- You are setting up a computer temporarily and do not want every cloud file downloaded.
When to choose Always keep on this device
- You must open or edit the file during an outage or while offline.
- A folder contains working material that you use repeatedly and want to open without waiting for a download.
- You need a local copy for a specific task and have enough disk space to store it.
Keeping an item on the device improves offline availability but does not make the storage requirement disappear. The local copy uses disk space until you select Free up space again.
Choosing folders without filling the computer
OneDrive’s setup folder selection is useful when a former SkyDrive account contains years of photos, documents or other large collections. Start with the folders needed on this computer rather than synchronizing the entire account automatically. You can then keep high-priority files locally and leave less-used material online-only.
Recommended Free Tools
A practical arrangement is to synchronize the top-level folders you need to see, then apply Always keep on this device only to the subfolders or files required for offline work. This keeps the File Explorer structure familiar while limiting local disk consumption.

Windows version support and what the end dates mean
Microsoft’s support information gives two important cutoffs for the OneDrive desktop app:
| Windows version | OneDrive desktop-app support status | Date recorded by Microsoft |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 | Desktop-app support ended. | January 1, 2022 |
| Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier | Desktop-app support ended. | August 15, 2026 |
Because the current date is October 17, 2026, the Windows 10 21H2-and-earlier cutoff has already passed. Microsoft also states that OneDrive is built into Windows 10, but the version-specific support cutoff still matters: being on Windows 10 as a broad label does not establish that a particular release remains supported.

On an unsupported system, you may still be able to use the web service. Microsoft advises checking its current OneDrive requirements information for the exact behavior and installation options before attempting to install or troubleshoot the desktop client. Do not assume that an old SkyDrive installer can restore support for an operating system that the current client no longer supports.

Common problems after searching for SkyDrive
“I cannot find a SkyDrive download.”
That search is using the former product name. Look for the current OneDrive client or use the OneDrive web service. A separate, supported SkyDrive download is not the path Microsoft provides now.
“My computer has a OneDrive folder, but I expected SkyDrive.”
The folder name is correct. Microsoft changed the product name in 2014, so current Windows integration uses OneDrive. Check the account signed in to the client and the folders selected during setup if expected content is absent.
“I can see a file, but it will not open while I am offline.”
The item is likely online-only. Mark the file or its containing folder Always keep on this device while an internet connection is available, and allow the local copy to finish before going offline.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“OneDrive is using too much disk space.”
Review which files or folders were selected for synchronization, then use Free up space for items that do not need offline access. This changes their local status without requiring you to treat them as deleted from the cloud.
“The old files are not visible after installation.”
First verify that you signed in with the Microsoft account that held the former SkyDrive content. Then review the folders selected for synchronization. If the computer runs Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or Windows 10 version 21H2 or earlier, the desktop-app support end dates may prevent the current client from working as expected; try the web service and check Microsoft’s current requirements information.
SkyDrive versus OneDrive in practical terms
The following comparison describes the workflow a reader searching for SkyDrive is trying to recover, not two currently available products:
| Workflow question | Former SkyDrive expectation | Current OneDrive approach |
|---|---|---|
| What appears in Windows? | A SkyDrive-named folder or client in older instructions. | A OneDrive folder and OneDrive integration in File Explorer. |
| How are folders selected? | Older setup instructions may refer to SkyDrive folder selection. | Choose folders during OneDrive setup, then manage local status in File Explorer. |
| How is disk space controlled? | Older guides may assume files are downloaded locally. | Use Files On-Demand for online-only visibility and select Free up space when a local copy is no longer needed. |
| How is offline work handled? | A local copy was needed for offline use. | Mark required files or folders Always keep on this device. |
| Which Windows support rules apply? | Historical SkyDrive documentation does not define current support. | Follow current OneDrive requirements; Microsoft records desktop-app cutoffs for older Windows releases. |
A short decision checklist
- You only need to view or download a few files: use the OneDrive web service.
- You want cloud files in File Explorer: install or open OneDrive and choose the folders to synchronize.
- You need files without internet: select Always keep on this device before disconnecting.
- You need to reclaim disk space: select Free up space for files that can remain online-only.
- You are on an older Windows release: check Microsoft’s current requirements because support ended for Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier on the dates listed above.
The name to remember is OneDrive. It is the maintained Microsoft service and Windows client that replaced SkyDrive, while Files On-Demand and the folder-selection controls determine how much of that cloud content is actually stored on your PC.
