Windshear is the best all-around pick in this ranking for its ability to interrupt and knock down enemies, not for having the highest base damage. The strongest choice depends on your build, when you acquire a level-scaled weapon, and what you are fighting. This ranking covers the base game and Dawnguard and Dragonborn; it excludes Anniversary Edition and other Creation Club additions.

The order is an editorial ranking, not a damage-only comparison or a controlled gameplay test. It weighs each weapon’s distinctive effect and use case alongside its listed base damage. The item values below are those listed by the Skyrim Wiki (ESO UI); the reference pages do not display a publication year for them.

Several special weapons have versions that scale with the player’s level when acquired. Their listed maximums should not be treated as guaranteed stats at every level. If you want the strongest listed version, check the weapon’s level scaling before collecting it.

The 10 best one-handed weapons in Skyrim
1. Windshear
Windshear tops the ranking because its bash effect can knock enemies down, giving it a powerful control niche. Its listed base damage is 11, so its appeal is not that it leads this group in raw damage. It is a strong pick when disrupting an enemy matters more than maximizing the damage number on the weapon.

2. Chillrend
Chillrend combines substantial damage with frost and a chance to paralyze. Its level-46-and-above version is listed at 15 base damage, deals 30 frost damage to health and stamina, and has a chance to paralyze a target for two seconds. Those figures describe the strongest level bracket cited, not every version of Chillrend. If you acquire it earlier, its stats can be lower.
3. Dragonbone Sword
The Dragonbone Sword has 15 listed base damage and can be crafted with the Dragon Smithing perk. It is a strong choice for players who want a craftable sword and can access that perk. The claim that it is the best craftable sword applies to the base-game scope; Creation Club adds swords that can be stronger. It is associated with Dawnguard, so it is not a base-game-only option.

4. Dawnbreaker
Dawnbreaker is most valuable against undead. Its listed base damage is 12, and its effects include burning targets and a special fiery effect against undead. That matchup makes it a more situational choice than a general-purpose damage leader: bring it when undead are the problem rather than judging it only by its base-damage figure.
5. Miraak’s Sword
Miraak’s Sword absorbs stamina and has a maximum listed base damage of 16. Treat 16 as the cited maximum, not a guaranteed value at every acquisition level. The sword is part of Dragonborn, so it requires that DLC.

6. Nightingale Blade
The Nightingale Blade absorbs health and stamina, giving it sustain utility as well as damage. Its strongest listed form depends on the level at which you obtain it. If you want the most powerful level-scaled version, timing matters; do not assume an early-acquired blade will later update to the higher-level stats.
7. Bloodscythe and Soulrender
These two weapons are ranked together as a paired dual-wield option. Their effects complement one another, including health and magicka absorption and effects that weaken enemy defenses. Their niche is strongest when you can use both weapons together; this is not a single-sword recommendation, and the pair’s appeal depends on your willingness to dual-wield.

8. Dragonbane
Dragonbane is the specialist for fighting dragons: it deals additional damage to dragons and shock damage to other targets. Its target-specific bonus makes it especially useful when dragons are the encounter, while the shock effect gives it a function against other opponents too.
9. Harkon’s Sword
Harkon’s Sword can absorb health, magicka, and stamina, but that effect is conditional: the wielder must be a vampire. If your character is not a vampire, do not choose it on the assumption that you will receive those absorption effects. Its value therefore depends on character state, not just weapon stats.

10. The Pale Blade
The Pale Blade combines frost and stamina damage with a fear effect against lower-level targets. Its listed version is level-dependent, so the effect and stats you get depend in part on when you acquire it. It is a useful option for control against eligible lower-level enemies, but less universally valuable than a weapon whose effects do not depend on that matchup.

What level scaling and perks change
For Chillrend, the Nightingale Blade, and the Pale Blade, the version you receive can depend on your level when you obtain it. Waiting can matter if you specifically want the strongest listed version, but a level-scaled weapon is not automatically the best choice for every build or encounter.
Do not conflate a weapon’s base damage with its later upgrades or critical damage. The Skyrim Wiki (ESO UI) lists the Bladesman sword perk as offering a 10%, 15%, or 20% critical-damage chance at skill thresholds of 30, 60, and 90, respectively, and notes that critical damage is calculated from base damage. Those figures describe the perk thresholds and calculation, not a universal increase to every sword’s displayed base damage.
Does this ranking include Anniversary Edition weapons?
No. The ranking’s scope is the base game, Dawnguard, and Dragonborn, with Anniversary Edition additions treated separately because they are not present in every version. Creation Club content is also relevant to comparisons: it can include swords stronger than the Dragonbone Sword, so calling that sword the best craftable option requires the base-game qualification.
