If a Skyrim quest marker is missing or seems stuck, first select the quest you mean in the Quests log, then use its Show on Map option to check where the game places the target. If the target is present but an NPC or objective is not progressing, leave the area and return; use an earlier save only if the quest remains broken.
1. Confirm the right quest is active
Open the Quests log, select the quest you are trying to complete, and read its current objective. Quest targets are tied to active quests: Skyrim’s manual explains that activating a quest adds its targets to the compass and world and local maps. Bethesda Support likewise advises checking the Quests log and available markers when you are unsure how to complete a quest: Bethesda Support.
For miscellaneous objectives, make sure the relevant objective is active instead of assuming every entry in the journal will display a target. Controls and labels differ by platform and release, so follow the current prompts shown in your game rather than relying on button instructions from an older manual.
2. Check the target with Show on Map
Use the journal’s Show on Map function to open the world map and inspect the quest target. This helps distinguish a missing compass or HUD marker from an objective whose target is actually located somewhere else. The Skyrim manual documents this map behavior for the PS3 release.

If the map shows a target but the compass does not, you have at least confirmed that the selected objective has a map location. If no target appears, recheck the quest and objective selection before treating the quest as broken.
3. Let a stuck or missing NPC recover
If the objective depends on an NPC who is frozen or absent, travel away from the area and return later. Bethesda recommends this approach because the area should reset; its guidance for Nintendo Switch gives the same broad advice. Check the NPC and objective again after returning.

4. Wait if queued actions are visibly resolving
In some saves, attempted actions may have queued and then begin resolving later after a game update. If you can see old actions executing in sequence, Bethesda advises continuing or waiting in a safe area or while paused until the activity stops, then making a new save. This guidance applies to that described backlog condition; it is not a general explanation for every missing marker.
5. Reload an earlier save only if needed
If the objective is still broken after the less disruptive checks, Bethesda recommends loading an earlier save and retrying the step. Make a separate manual save first if possible, and be aware that returning to an earlier save discards progress made afterward.

6. Avoid fast-traveling during a special animation
Bethesda documents a control-lock risk when using Show on Map to fast travel during a special animation, such as mounting a carriage or sitting in a chair. If controls lock after loading in this situation, load a save from before the fast travel, let the animation finish, and then fast travel again.

The available guidance does not establish a single marker-visibility toggle or menu path that applies to every Skyrim platform and edition. The PS3 manual documents quest activation and map targets, but it does not confirm current menu labels for Special Edition, Anniversary Edition, PC, or current consoles. Bethesda’s general stuck-quest advice also does not provide a verified fix for individual mods. For more specific troubleshooting, identify your platform, edition, quest name, and mod list.
