slayerui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file, but it is primarily associated with Windows 2000 rather than Windows 10 or Windows 11. If a modern program reports that slayerui.dll is missing, do not download a replacement DLL first; identify the Windows version and the exact path in the error.
The file is described as Compatibility Tab Shell Extension DLL and historically lived at:

On Windows 2000, the Compatibility tab used this shell extension to expose compatibility settings for applications. Windows XP used an equivalent file named SlayerXP.dll, while later Windows versions used newer compatibility components, including acppage.dll.

That distinction determines the correct repair. Windows 2000 users may need matching installation or service-pack media. Windows 10 and Windows 11 users should normally repair Windows, inspect the application that produced the message, or determine whether an obsolete component is being requested.

Before repairing slayerui.dll
Do these checks first. They prevent you from replacing a historical Windows 2000 file with an incompatible file from another Windows release.
1. Confirm the operating system
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
winver
- Press Enter.
- Record the Windows edition and version shown.
If the computer is running Windows 10 or Windows 11, the absence of slayerui.dll alone does not indicate a damaged installation. A current Windows installation should not normally require this Windows 2000-era file.
2. Record the complete error
Write down:
- The full error text
- The application that displays it
- The complete path named in the message
- Whether the error appears during startup, after opening a file, or when opening a program property page
- Whether
slayerui.dllexists in the named folder
A message naming:
C:WindowsAppPatchslayerui.dll
is different from an application asking for a DLL inside its own installation folder. Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64 simply because a program mentions it.
3. Check the file properties if it exists
If you find the file:
- Right-click
slayerui.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the description and publisher information.
A genuine file is identified as a Windows compatibility-shell component associated with Microsoft. File properties are useful evidence, but they are not a substitute for a matching Windows installation source.
Fix 1: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the state of Windows and available repair files.
This is the safest first repair on Windows 10 or Windows 11 when the message may reflect damaged Windows components. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Wait until the command finishes. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Restart Windows.
DISM may appear to pause for a while. Let it complete rather than interrupting it.
Run System File Checker
After restarting:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer once more.
- Open the program that produced the
slayerui.dllmessage.
The useful SFC results are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find damaged protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: test the original application again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: continue with System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall rather than downloading
slayerui.dll.
Microsoft’s repair guidance is available in its System File Checker documentation.
Repeatedly running SFC without checking whether anything changed usually adds no value. If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store, move to a recovery method.
When manually comparing DISM and SFC results, it is easy to repeat the same commands without knowing which component remains damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and show what it identifies, while the repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows recovery remains the appropriate path when system files are seriously damaged.
Fix 2: Use System Restore
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes, plus the time needed to choose a restore point.
Use System Restore if the error began after a software installation, update, cleanup operation, or system change and a restore point is available.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed-program changes without removing personal documents.
Start System Restore from Windows
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the
slayerui.dllerror began. - Select Scan for affected programs if the option is shown.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Confirm the restart.
After Windows starts, test the affected program.
Start System Restore from recovery options
If Windows cannot start normally:
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart from the Start menu, or interrupt startup until Windows enters recovery.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose an administrator account.
- Enter the account password if requested.
- Select a suitable restore point and complete the wizard.
If no restore point exists, or the restore fails, do not obtain the DLL from a download site. Continue with a repair reinstall or the recovery option appropriate for the Windows edition.

Fix 3: Repair-reinstall the current version of Windows
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the installation method and device.
On Windows 11, a repair reinstall can replace damaged Windows components while preserving personal files and, depending on the selected method, applications and settings.
Before starting, back up important files and connect the computer to reliable power.
Use Windows 11 recovery settings
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Look for the option to fix problems using Windows Update or reinstall the current version.
- Select the available reinstall option.
- Read the information about preserved files and applications.
- Begin the reinstall and allow the computer to restart.
The exact recovery choices can vary by Windows build and device configuration. Microsoft documents the current process in its guide to fixing Windows by reinstalling the current version.

Fix 4: Repair Windows 2000 from matching media
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours.
This is the historically correct path if the computer really runs Windows 2000 and slayerui.dll is missing from the Windows installation.
Use installation or service-pack media that matches the installed Windows 2000 edition and service-pack level as closely as possible. A file taken from Windows XP, Windows 8, Windows 10, or Windows 11 is not a valid substitute.
The exact repair screens depend on the media and installation state, so preserve important data before beginning. The goal is to repair or restore the Windows component from its own installation source rather than copying an unverified file into the system directory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The historical location is commonly:
C:WINNTAppPatchslayerui.dll
The variable form is:
%SystemRoot%AppPatchslayerui.dll
After the file has been restored from matching media, restart Windows and check whether the Compatibility tab has returned.
Do not assume that a file-size or version number found on a third-party listing applies to every Windows 2000 build. File details can vary by build and service pack.

Fix 5: Register the file only on the matching Windows 2000 system
Time needed: 5 minutes.
slayerui.dll was used as a shell extension, so registration can be relevant on Windows 2000 when the file exists but the Compatibility tab is absent.
Do not use this step as a general solution for a modern application that reports a missing DLL.
- Confirm that the file exists at:
text
%SystemRoot%AppPatchslayerui.dll
- Open Start.
- Select Run.
- Type
cmd. - Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter if supported, or open an administrator command prompt using the available Windows 2000 method.
- Run:
cmd
regsvr32 "%SystemRoot%AppPatchslayerui.dll"
- Restart Windows.
- Right-click an application shortcut or executable and check whether the Compatibility tab is available.
Microsoft explains that Regsvr32 calls a DLL’s registration entry point. It only works when the file is present, compatible, intact, and registration-capable.
Possible failures include:
- The file is missing.
- The file is corrupt.
- The DLL belongs to another Windows release.
- A required dependency is missing.
- The DLL does not expose the registration entry point.
If Regsvr32 reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, do not keep trying random copies. Registration is not appropriate for every DLL, and a failed registration does not prove that Windows needs a replacement download.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes.
If the error appeared immediately after malware removal or an antivirus scan, Windows Security may have quarantined or removed a file.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Select a detection to see its path and action.
- Restore a file only if you have confirmed that it is the legitimate, matching Windows component.
Do not restore a detection merely because its filename is slayerui.dll. Confirm the path, operating system, publisher, and reason for the detection first. Microsoft warns that restoring a detected threat can expose the device again. See Protection history in Windows Security.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Check the application that is requesting the file
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, an application requesting slayerui.dll may be old, incorrectly packaged, or using an obsolete compatibility reference.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Uninstall if the program is no longer needed, or use its documented repair option.
- Restart Windows.
- Install a current version from the software publisher’s official source.
If the error appears only when launching one old application, the application itself may be the source of the request. Reinstalling that program is more appropriate than placing slayerui.dll in its folder.
Do not substitute SlayerXP.dll or acppage.dll. Those names refer to compatibility components from different Windows generations. A similar purpose does not make the files interchangeable.
Fix 8: Rule out an unrelated driver problem
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes.
There is no evidence that slayerui.dll is a graphics, audio, chipset, printer, or game-driver runtime. Device Manager and driver updates are therefore not the normal repair for this file. Use this check only if the error began alongside a broader hardware or Windows instability problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device categories related to the recent problem.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver obtained from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and retest the original application.
Do not remove a functioning driver merely because a DLL error appeared. A driver update will not normally restore a missing Windows compatibility-shell component.
Manually identifying the correct driver versions across several devices can be time-consuming, especially when the original issue is not actually driver-related. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues, while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace Windows repair or the application vendor’s definitive fix.
Do not download slayerui.dll from a DLL website
A standalone DLL download is unsafe and usually does not address the real cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA downloaded copy may have:
- The wrong Windows-generation build
- The wrong architecture
- Altered or malicious contents
- Missing dependencies
- An incompatible service-pack level
- No valid registration information
Do not copy it to C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder. Do not register it with Regsvr32 unless you are repairing the matching Windows 2000 installation and have restored the file from trusted Windows media.
The safe sources are:
- Matching Windows 2000 installation or service-pack media for a genuine Windows 2000 system
- Windows repair tools such as DISM and SFC
- System Restore
- A current Windows repair reinstall
- The official installer for the application that requested the file
Microsoft does not provide a current general-purpose slayerui.dll download page.
What is most likely causing the error
| Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Damaged or incomplete Windows 2000 installation | Repair from matching Windows 2000 media |
| Missing Windows 2000 shell-extension registration | Restore the correct file, then use Regsvr32 |
| Modern Windows corruption | Run DISM, then SFC, followed by recovery if needed |
| Old software requesting an obsolete component | Repair or reinstall that software |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection history and verify the file before restoring |
Confusion with SlayerXP.dll or acppage.dll |
Identify the operating system and use its own compatibility components |
| A driver or runtime problem incorrectly labeled as this DLL | Inspect the full error path and application event |
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, graphics drivers, and game launchers are not normal fixes for slayerui.dll. The file is a Windows compatibility-shell component, not a standard application runtime library.
FAQ
Is slayerui.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows DLL described as Compatibility Tab Shell Extension DLL. Its strongest historical association is with Windows 2000.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should Windows 10 or Windows 11 contain slayerui.dll?
Not normally. Later Windows versions use different compatibility infrastructure. The absence of this file on a modern installation is not, by itself, evidence of a broken system.
Where was slayerui.dll stored?
Historically, it was stored under:
%SystemRoot%AppPatchslayerui.dll
On a typical Windows 2000 installation, that could resolve to:
C:WINNTAppPatchslayerui.dll
Is there a 32-bit and 64-bit version?
Public evidence confirms an x86-era Windows 2000 file, but it does not establish an authoritative modern System32 and SysWOW64 pair. Do not infer a valid architecture or location from a DLL download page.
Does Regsvr32 fix the error?
Only in the historical Windows 2000 shell-extension case, when the correct file exists and its registration is missing. It is not a universal repair command for ordinary runtime DLL errors.
Can I replace it with SlayerXP.dll or acppage.dll?
No. Those files belong to different Windows generations. Similar names or compatibility functions do not make them safe replacements.
What should I provide if the problem remains?
Record the exact Windows edition and build, complete error text, full path, affected application, whether the file exists under AppPatch, the results of DISM and SFC, and whether the problem began after an update, antivirus action, or software installation.
